Star Trek Picard is not Star Trek

What is Star Trek anyway? If it's just whatever the copyright holder (CBS) want to sell us, no matter the quality or tone, then yes, Star Trek: Picard is Star Trek. And so it Discovery, and JJ Trek. But is Star Trek more than just a brand name? Does it stand for something deeper, does it offer some vision for humanity? If it does, or ever has, then I can't see how Picard could be considered true Star Trek. It's more like the antithesis of Star Trek.

Just because they're selling it doesn't mean we have to buy it. I for one will not settle for a subpar Trek, not when we could have--no, not when we should have--good Trek instead. After all, isn't that what we deserve?

The problem with that argument is that most of us genuinely like the show, and think it's good Trek.

If you're up for arguing about that, this is the place. But nobody's actually saying Picard is Trek just because CBS says so.

Wha? Who's talking about TNG when it premiered in 1987? This thread is about current Star Trek. ;)

Hello.
I can't be more dissappointed with this new series. I'm 25, i grew up with Star Trek since my parents showed me some VHSs of The Original Series when i was 2. Since then i have loved this incredible world, from The Cage to the last season of Star Trek Enterprise.

I'm not going to agree with you that this isn't Star Trek. I think what Star Trek is has "evolved" with the current expectations from television.

I will say as someone who like you grew up on 90s/2000s Star Trek I much prefer those 25 seasons/4 movies and the two decades of novels we got satisfyingly continuing that version of Trek. Thankfully we both can continue to enjoy them indefinitely.

On what basis do you think it is the antithesis? There is a society struggling to maintain and live its core value, but there is also a hero trying to remind that society of what is important. There have been times in Star Trek that the society has lost its way. There have been times when people have been less welcoming to strangers. The story has always worked to show how the things Star Trek "stands for" is restored.

Nah...let's keep it, so in 15 years when Trek has evolved yet again, and everyone is crying and whining about it not being "real" and violating everything the franchise stands for, and ultimately being awful compared to DSC and PIC, we can point back to this and continue to laugh about how some things never change.
