Star Trek Picard is not Star Trek

If they wanted to make a noir crime drama about a jaded Andorian cop chasing a Betazoid serial killer on 24th century Earth, it would still be Star Trek.

They can say it is, but that doesn’t mean audiences would accept it as such.

But how many of us would be paying CBS for these shows if they weren’t connected to Star Trek?

I'd still like Discovery even if it wasn't a Star Trek show. But that's not the surprise. This is the surprise. I wasn't in any hurry to see any type of TNG/VOY Continuation. I really wasn't. Picard had a much steeper hill to climb with me than Discovery ever did. So the fact that they actually did it, means this is a show I'd pay to watch. I enjoy Picard as much as I do in spite of the fact that it's connected to Star Trek shows I'm not enamored with, not because of it.

EDIT: To clarify, if I heard good word-of-mouth, I'd purchase individual episodes for it through Amazon, like I do and have done for a lot of other series. If there were enough CBSAA native series that I liked where it would be cheaper to subscribe to them directly, that's when I would've made the jump.

It occurs to me that Forever94 didn't list Short Treks in his "You, you, you, you, and YOU!" line-up.

An oversight? Or a secret fan of "Calypso"?

Holy crap I would watch the heck out that series.

I think star trek needs to become more than what it was to stay relevant and look to different genres to shake things up. If they do an exploration series, I'd want it to go back to the western vein of TOS with the only starship in the quadrant as a play on the only sheriff in town motif. Let's have a 24th century crime noir series, a 24th century Jason bourneesque spy thriller or a 23rd century political drama focusing on events after TUC.

If star trek is going to continue it needs to step out of the shadow cast by the turgidness of 90's trek and explore new ways of telling stories. Disco and Picard are solid steps in that direction.

Hoo boy, if Disco season 3 confirms the V'Drayash are indeed the Federation gone evil that some think Calypso implies, that's going to cascade into a lot of "NOT MY STAR TREK!!" frothing from the peanut gallery.

It's not the direction I would have wanted to see it go, and I do see some of the criticisms as valid, but I feel that way about all current tv/movies. In TV writer's rooms, I think the Boomers who were going to change the world have given way to Gen. Xers who grew up on Cobain and a certain nihilism. Plus, everyone wants to make the next Dark Knight.

That said, I am watching and getting some enjoyment out of Picard, just taking it for what it is.

Picard is sort of like going to your high school reunion. Your old friends are nothing like what you remember. You feel a bit out of place, awkward with a hint of sadness. But yet, in the end, you are glad you came.

At the end of the day, we are in a far better place than we were in 2005 when it seemed Trek was doomed. So I am along for the ride.

Raffi commenting on Picards antique furniture and the like was less about money and more about how he absconded and hid away in his comfy mansion and ignored her and the people he had sworn to save for 14 years. It's a comment on his inability to face his failures and the people he failed.
The dialogue is very clear. This show doesn't do subtle.

"I saw you, sitting back in your very fine chateau. Those big oak beams, heirloom furniture. Yeah, I'd show you around my estate, but it's more of a hovel, so that would just be, you know, humiliating."

I think that's indicating Picard's disconnect and Rafi's anger. Again, not a commentary. But, I read lots of things in to things that are not there.

You know what was on my mind after the episode? Not Icheb's eyeball getting scooped out. But, why, as a science officer, was he wearing red?
Have we seen any of that uniform in blue? Maybe they never made one.

I had the same thought.

As long as it has scenes like this it will ALWAYS be Star Trek:
