Trek writers original works

Back in the 70s Stephen Goldin (Trek to Madworld) wrote a pretty cool short story called "But as a Soldier, For His Country." He later went on to expand it into a full novel, but the original version is better, imo.

Well worth a read if you can track down a copy.

I'm doing two original short stories in two of my fantasy universes via the crowdfund route:

"The Gorvangin Rampages: A Dragon Precinct Story." This is a tale that takes place during the one-year gap between Gryphon Precinct and Mermaid Precinct, and gives the untold story of the Gorvangin Rampages that resulted in Lieutenant Horran being gravely injured.

"Ragnarok and a Hard Place: A Tale of Cassie Zukav, Weirdness Magnet." A major story in my cycle of Key West-based urban fantasy stories about scuba diving, rock and roll music, Norse gods, folklore, and beer drinking, this one featuring the unexpected return of Odin and Loki to Key West just in time for the end of the world -- again.

It's just five bucks for one story or eight bucks for both, plus there are other nifty rewards for higher donations, like an audio, a story bundle, and other neat stuff.

Let it be noted that Kij Johnson, my co-author on DRAGON'S HONOR, just won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novella for "The Privilege of the Happy Ending."
When I was trying to decide where to get my M.A. in 2008, I visited the University of Kansas, which hosts the Center for the Study of Science Fiction. I spent some time with Chris McKitterick, then the associate director of the center. When I mentioned that I had recently published a couple Star Trek tie-ins, he revealed that he had written the nonfiction segments of Captain Proton: Defender of the Earth. He then said I would fit right in if I came to KU and volunteered at the CSSF because the director was James Gunn who (among many much larger sf accomplishments) wrote The Joy Machine and also involved was Kij Johnson, co-author of Dragon's Honor. (I think Chris and Kij are married?) Everyone at the CSSF had done a Star Trek tie-in!

I didn't go to KU, though.

This is great. I look forward to reading The Dragon Waiting.

I haven't read it in literally decades, but I remember really liking it.

And I still have my old paperback copy because I was sure it would never see print again. Glad to be wrong.

Just found out that Vonda McIntyre left her literary estate (along with a substantial bequest) to the Clarion West Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing Workshop, which she helped to found back in the day. (Vonda was actually one of my instructors at CW way back in '84.)

This doesn't apply to her Star Trek work, of course, since those were work-for-hire assignments, but the rights to her original work will be managed by Clarion West in perpetuity.

Apologies as I do remember a similar thread to this but I seem to have lost it, I was looking for other books as I've collected quite a few star trek novels to get through but apart from being good ideas and continuing trek they are also written very well so I thought it would be fun to look at the writers other novelisations or even original stories because I want to read through some different content. I'd also be open to general sci-fi recommendations at the discretion of mods because at that point it's not really trek-lit related but I didn't see any general lit board.
