Unpopular Trek opinions game

i hate to say this but ever sense about 2009 CBS/ Paramount whatever have decided to go in a new direction and aim for that wider demographic instead of trying to court the loyal fans. I think its a mistake and wont last trying to appeal to general audience and wont work

Like or dislike various aspects of new shows, gaining or aiming to gain new long-term fans is always a good thing and it's also not easy to do. How to handle continuity reasonably so one doesn't lose fans never hurts either. In the end, the show has been said by some to be diluted into something more "generic faddish fluff with the veneer of trademarks" (not unlike, from a certain point of view, some of TNG season 1's stories - in some ways what's going on nowadays is anything but new, right down to killing off Kirk in an ignoble way, etc) -- but the general audience isn't going to care for any series long-term, often because - like talk shows - it's background filler to be replaced by next week's pet rock. Long-term fans, if they don't stick around, won't and sometimes but not always for the same reasons.

Well i guess its just not for me, I guess ill never just understand the appeal of the new stuff just like the drek they call James Bond now

And that's OK too.

I often think that fans are a bit too "die hard" (myself included) of thinking every single installment in a franchise has to be for them. I think, and as I get older this becomes more true, I am far less concerned about the "Star Trek" name and more concerned about the story value. For me, ST 09 is one of the more prescient and valuable stories in Trek history. But, I totally get why it isn't for everyone else. It just happened to hit me where I live with the characters.

So, I'm less a brand focused and more individual installment focused.

oyal fans" from the '90s and before are a shrinking niche audience. The brand will fade into obscurity and die if it aims strictly for such narrow appeal.
Part of me wishes the only Trek that ever existed was TOS through TWOK, and the only Bond movies ever made were the first three with Connery (and even "Goldfinger" is pushing it, tbh). But I manage to enjoy the wide variety of the rest on different levels. ST09 brought me back to Trek after being majorly burnt-out on the Berman-era stuff. Once again I had found a sense of swashbuckling fun that I previously only got from TOS, with the new depiction of Kirk coming up from a troubled background being quite relevant.

How this is a bad thing is always beyond me...

It's all about gatekeeping and possessiveness. Some fans think they own Star Trek and have the right to dictate who should watch it because of all the money they have spent on merchandise over the years. They don't want the normies who gave them a hard time in high school intruding on their sacred space.

Star Trek is for everyone and we should be welcoming more people into the ranks of Trek fans. Kinda like how the Federation welcomes different species and different ideologies. It can only be a good thing for the longevity of the franchise.

I never really had a Problem with 09 and Beyond because It was in its own continuity and didn't really mess with the prime universe. Tho i can still make nitpicks about how you dont need to drill into the center of the planet to drop a black hole in it because, well its a black hole and just questionable writing. I like the acting a lot tho and it has the best Spirk fan art. Into Darkness however can go screw itself tho I think SF debris did a good thrashing of film so check that out.

Also since this is the Unpopular Opinions game: I am ambivalent to TOS and actually find myself not watching the least of all the Trek shows (expect for TAS which i watched 5 minutes of and went nope!)

One would only hope that fans would aspire to ideals espouse by their favorite franchise.

If you've read how most people here, when encountering people of differing opinions or values, interact........

Unpopular Opinion (I happen to know this for a fact): I started re-watching Discovery. I like Picard a lot but, as much as I do, I still prefer Discovery.

I rewatched "Brother" a while back, was going to do a season two rewatch, but I was just so bored by it. Could just be that the answer to the Red Angel mystery/end of the season turned me off.

I'll have to try again in a few months.

I’ve never felt the need to rewatch Discovery. This is the only Trek series that I have felt this way about.

They’re both so different.

Like, which do I like better, steak or banana splits?

:techman:

True. But, on a basic level, it all comes back to why I prefer the 23rd Century over the 24th. In the 24th Century, even going into space looks like and feels like "another day at the office, another day at work". It's more settled. It's more domesticated. In the 23rd Century, regardless of which version, Space feels like Space. The differences between the two make sense. Space should feel more settled and "business as usual" in the 24th Century. I just have a preference for it feeling like The Frontier.

Having just watched a ton of the 24th Century, even though I liked most of it, I'm more sure of this stance than ever.
