i hate to say this but ever sense about 2009 CBS/ Paramount whatever have decided to go in a new direction and aim for that wider demographic instead of trying to court the loyal fans. I think its a mistake and wont last trying to appeal to general audience and wont work
Like or dislike various aspects of new shows, gaining or aiming to gain new long-term fans is always a good thing and it's also not easy to do. How to handle continuity reasonably so one doesn't lose fans never hurts either. In the end, the show has been said by some to be diluted into something more "generic faddish fluff with the veneer of trademarks" (not unlike, from a certain point of view, some of TNG season 1's stories - in some ways what's going on nowadays is anything but new, right down to killing off Kirk in an ignoble way, etc) -- but the general audience isn't going to care for any series long-term, often because - like talk shows - it's background filler to be replaced by next week's pet rock. Long-term fans, if they don't stick around, won't and sometimes but not always for the same reasons.
