The twist in this one is that its also a musical. Unfriended was interesting in that the whole movie is done via Skype, Facebook, and YouTube, and done with the camera pointing at one character's computer. Though the text chats are difficult to read on a television screen, I wonder how it worked at the movies. And it was difficult to think that it was all done by a vengeful ghost. Dark Web, the sequel, is filmed the same way, but its easier to believe an online group of assholes as the villains. The extended version is pretty much the same, except the ending is different, and, to be honest, I think the ending of the regular version was better. TSiaaS was not that great, the whole thing hinges on coincidence after coincidence and random happenings. Took me too days to watch it. Underwater wasn't the worst Kristen Stewart movie ever. BBfL was a fun sequel, I enjoyed, and have watched it twice. The first viewing was in IMAX and the second was regular 2D. IMAX did not add much of anything to the picture quality. JM was an interesting "based on a true story" movie. I think that Tim Blake Nelson has the standout performance in the film as Ralph Myers, the jailhouse snitch. Dolittle was a very meh movie for me. Didn't care for it at all. The Turning was freaking awful and had a WTF?!? ending that makes zero sense.
Just finished streaming the new version of Midway. Great Pearl Harbor CGI scenes and not bad on the history. A bit over the top, Hollywood-style, on Best's heroism. They didn't even mention Dusty Kleiss who was on the Enterprise along with Best and matched his feat of getting direct hits on 2 carriers on June 4. In addition, he got a direct hit on the Japanese cruiser Mikuma the next day - topping Best's score. Still, I would recommend the movie for a couple hours of great WWII action, Hollywood-style.

Watched a few of those the other day. UG was really hit & miss for me. Didn't care much for it since I couldn't get behind Adam Sandler's character. It was nice to see Judd Hirsch is still working. I got to talk to my nephew after about how it copies Robert Altman's multiple speakers scenes, with overlapping dialogue. And he learned the Hollywood rule that if ya show a gun, ya gotta use a gun. TLFM was pretty good. The stuff with just Sebastian Stan was kinda dull, but Ed Harris, Samuel L Jackson, William Hurt & Peter Fonda as Vietnam War veterans are worth the price of admission. Christopher Plummer was good, too, of course. TG was crazy stupid entertaining. Great action, dialogue, dark humor. I enjoyed it quite a bit, though I could have done without the beastiality & the one female character of note or substance becoming a victim of sexual assault. Ah, well... My nephew & I will be going to D/FW to watch the new Harley Quinn movie at an Alamo Drafthouse. I've already preordered our tickets.
I watched Under the Skin tonight. I tried to watch in 6 years ago and fell asleep pretty early on and never got back around to it until today. The dreamlike quality still made me very sleepy, but I ended up really liking it. A24 does no wrong. 8/10
I saw three beautiful movies with a parenthood/family theme (cinema): Adam, a beautiful and sensitive Moroccan movie about two women who change each other’s life (5/5). A perfectly normal family, a wonderful Danish movie about a young girl and her father whose relationship changes when the father comes out a transgender (4/5). Family Romance, LLC, an almost documentary like movie about a man who has a company in Tokyo that rents out substitute family members (4/5).
I was wondering when someone would mention this. I saw it at our local movie festival way back in September and back then it didn't even have a release date or a trailer, and when the release date came and gone, I never saw anyone anywhere talk about it. I agree, seeing all those classic actors as the older versions of the war veterans was worth it. I heard they filled out the rest of the awards ceremony with real veterans.I really hope more people get to see this one. It deserves to be seen. And I think it's Peter Fonda's last official movie.
Amen to that. Between this and the last couple Tarantino movies, I'm starting to think that these are both very talented filmmakers who could benefit from a ruthless editor chopping down their repetitive movies to a reasonable length. I really liked 1917. My only criticism is that, when they were switching from one shot to another, when they blend it to look like the same shot, the image gets kinda blurry and it hurts my eyes. Well, yeah. She set that bar super low 12 years ago! I recently saw Honey Boy and Cats at the discount theater. Honey Boy was a really fascinating movie. It's semi-autobiographical about Shia LaBeouf's childhood but they fictionalize a lot of it, so my brain wasn't constantly trying to nitpick what was true and what wasn't. This was clearly a significant movie for LaBeouf, working out a bunch of his childhood demons while never really getting too mopey about it because it's not like he knew any other kind of life and he certainly seemed proud of his showbiz career. I did end up having some questions about what the deal was with his mother in all of this. The movie establishes that his mother is still alive and still cares enough to call periodically but doesn't explain why the kid isn't with her instead of his unstable ex-con father. I haven't usually been a fan of LaBeouf's movie roles but if he does more stuff like this, I'll be VERY interested. He's incredible as his father-- a pushy, ex-alcoholic, rodeo clown hasbeen with long hair & glasses that kinda makes him look like a trailer trash John Lennon. Cats has been getting a lot of bad press. I'll admit that I didn't understand.... ANY OF IT! Apparently, once a year, all of the cats gather together so Judi Dench can decide which one deserves to get reincarnated. Idris Elba wants to be the one to win the prize, so he eliminates his competition by kidnapping them with his magical teleportation powers. Everyone sings songs explaining who they are. Jennifer Hudson has apparently cornered the market for singing emotionally devastating power ballads. No, wait, that didn't sound right. Let me try it again..... **deep breath, full volume**.......... JENNIFER HUDSON HAS APPARENTLY CORNERED THE MARKET FOR SINGING EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATING POWER BALLADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There. That's better. I guess that there are some people who like it when Jennifer Hudson does this. She won an Oscar for doing it in Dreamgirls after all. But it's a bit much for me. Some actors chew the scenery. She just unhinges her jaw like a snake and swallows the scenery whole. I hope she never gets anywhere near "I Dreamed a Dream" or "On My Own," lest the nuclear musical fallout kills us all!
Today watched Brief Encounter. One of those old movies that makes you think about cultural changes. If it were a new movie, the same scenario of the woman with emotionally distant husband meeting a new guy she can have fun with would lead to a divorce. Makes you think about how recently absolute loyalty regardless of treatment was a cultural imperative for married people.

Found a couple more MST3K episodes on YouTube. The oldest nephew & I road tripped to Richardson to watch the new Harley Quinn movie at the Alamo Drafthouse on opening weekend. We both enjoyed it, and stayed through the credits to see if there was a bonus, and there is a joke, but not worth staying for, I don't think. Saw the movie the Sunday after at the IMAX at AMC Tyler, didn't really add much. TRS was kinda dumb, wasn't surprised why it bombed after watching the movie. Watched The Gentlemen a second time that weekend, it was still pretty good. Went to see Parasite last night. It was pretty good, but there were three other Best Picture nominees that could have won, instead. I've got tickets reserved to see Fantasy Island and The Call of the Wild later this week.
Horse Girl (Netflix) - 7 This is wild. I don't want to spoil anything . Fantasy Island (Cinema) - 4 Imagine a horror-comedy with one funny joke and absolutely no scares. It is literally devoid of anything that makes a movie interesting except for decent performances from Maggie Q and Lucy Hale. Blumhouse needs to spend more time on scripts . These quick turnaround are ridiculous .
Rented Ford vs Ferrari from Amazon Prime last night. 60" 4K TV and full surround sound going. Very good movie, easy to see why it was Oscar nominated in many categories, including sound. They captured the sounds of race car's very nicely and accurately. Easy 8.5 out of 10. Recommended.
First Reformed: Kind of like a modern retelling of Diary of a Country Priest. Covers topics such as despair over modern problems such as global warming and the conflation of politics with basic moral issues.
My favourite bit was when Shelby took Henry Ford II out on the track for a spin. The look on his face was priceless. I think that scene will become a classic.

I liked the two from Mark Maron. Found a couple more episodes of MST3K to watch on YouTube. FI was just stupid, and the twist was a waste of time with a stupid ass ending. Enjoyed TCotW quite a bit - it looked great on the BigD screen. Harrison Ford wasn't in it as much as I thought he would be based on the trailers & the posters & having his name above the title. Still, I liked it. TIM was alright, but I don't think watching it in IMAX was necessary. I'm sure a regular theater screen would be just fine. IJ:TM was dumb, the framing device to tell the story was stupid, and I could have done without it completely. These four guys aren't really actors, why make them act? Just let them do their thing, ya know. I liked StH more than I thought I would. My nephew wanted to see it, so we went. He liked it quite a bit. There's a bonus scene midcredits. I just wish there hadn't been so many damn kids at the last show of the day - all of em seemed to have tablets or smartphones to play with during the movie instead of actually watching the damn movie.
