SCOOB! - HBO Max

Not too many movies to watch this month. The AMC in Tyler and the Cinemark in Lufkin have both dropped to weekends only. Lufkin started that this week, too.

Kajillionaire was the 100th new to me movie of the year. It was alright, not great. Odd story about a family of grifters & thieves that the parents have used their daughter to make money since the day she was born. And then she actually makes an emotional connection with another person that her parents bring in on a con that the daughter planned.

YR was an alight movie filmed in & around Austin about the daughter of an illegal immigrant that gets rounded up, and has to make her way on her own as a musician. And the story has her depending on the kindness of strangers a lot to get by.

TWwG was a cute family film about the teenage son declaring war on his grandfather over a bedroom when the grandfather moves into the family's house. Laughed a few times during it, especially the trampoline dodgeball scene.

HT was about average for Liam Neeson these days. It has some decent chases, a good action bit, and a good cast, too. Would have been nice to have more Robert Patrick, I've liked him since the second Terminator movie, but it was cool to see Jeffrey Donovan in a major role. He was great on Burn Notice. Nothing particularly special about seeing it in IMAX, just went since it was an option. May see it again in 2D if its still showing in a couple of weeks.

TKD was not good, at all. I went because I was a fan of the Encyclopedia Brown books when I was a kid, and the flashback scenes of the movie reminded me of those stories, but the main story of the movie was depressing as all hell.

Went to see the original ANoES at the Cinemark. I know I've watched it before on DVD, over ten or fifteen years ago. First time to see it in a theater. Still kind of scary, still kind of creepy, and looks oh so very low budget. Still it gave us Johnny Depp, so there's that. And its interesting that Robert Englund was listed so far down in the credits considering he's the only one who was in every movie of the series, not counting the reboot.

Took my youngest nephew & the niece to see Monsters, Inc yesterday. For the Birds, one of my favorite Pixar shorts, played before the movie. The teens seemed to enjoy the movie, and I actually liked watching it on a theater screen. I first watched it on DVD forever ago.

Watched SCOOB! earlier tonight via HBO Max. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting based on the trailer, but still not very good. I did enjoy the animation, and its interesting how the studio wants a Hanna Barbera movie universe.

I have tickets to a free screening this Thursday, I'll be roadtripping to Dallas to see it. And the first Scream is playing at the Cinemark in Lufkin Friday night!

Fisherman's Friends on Netflix. A sweet hilarious warm-hearted comedy (and based on a true story) of a group of fishermen who get signed to a record deal singing sea-shanties. The village of Port Isaac should be familiar to all Doc Martin fans.

Freaky - free advance screening AMC Northpark

I drove out to Dallas yesterday for the first free advance screening I've gone to in a couple of years. Freaky is one that I've been looking forward to since I saw the first trailer, and the screening was two weeks before the scheduled release, so I figured it would be worth the trip.

First, about the screening.

In years past, you arrive early, get a spot in a line either in the theater lobby or outside one of the entrances, and wait awhile, since a pass does not guarantee admission, its first come, first serve. I usually take a book to read. This time was different. I got there early, just after 5:00 for a 7:30 screening, and was told that neither the studio or the theater wanted a line of folks waiting. The studio rep would be there around 6:30, and I was told to come back then. I wandered the mall, since going anywhere else would be a waste of time and might make me miss the movie.

When I got back, the studio rep had printed sheets for the rules of the screening, describing how folks would be going in & out of the screening, how seating would work, and other socially distant measures would be implemented. There were spaces marked outside the box office and going into the theater. Masks were required, and they even gave out movie-themed facemasks to those of us in attendance.

Every other row in the theater was blocked off. I wound up with an aisle seat, and two empty seats to me left.

The studio rep encouraged folks to take selfies with their masks on, and use hashtags #FreakyMovie and #FreakyMovieDallas to encourage screenings since this was the first screening they've had in months.

No new trailers before the movie. Once the house lights went down, the movie started.

And it was a really good movie!

Starts off when drinking teens talking about the local urban legend of the Blissfield Butcher, a serial killer who attacks misbehaving teenagers around the school's homecoming, and has been doing so since the 1970s. Enter Vince Vaughn as the silent, but gruesome, killer.

When he uses an ancient Aztec knife on teenager Millie after the homecoming football game, but fails to kill her, they wind up body swapping, putting the teenage girl into Vince Vaughn while the killer is now a high school student, targeting others around her.

There's a curse, and a time limit, and a lot of Vince Vaughn being hilarious as girl. Alan Ruck from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Star Trek: Generations plays the shop teacher. There are some gruesome deaths throughout the movie, and quite a bit of dark humor. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It did not disappoint.

I'll probably go see it again when it comes out next month.

This is a movie you turn on when you've made the choice to shut off your brain for two hours and just go with the action, like any other Mark Wahlberg movie.

The supporting cast pulls off a lot of the humour well and keep it interesting and funny even though you know exactly what is going to happen, but don't come here looking for anything groundbreaking.

Goldfinger (1964) - AMC Lufkin

Just before the end of October, I was able to get out to the Cinemark in Lufkin for the first Scream movie. I've seen the three sequels in theaters, but that was the first time seeing the first one on the big screen. Its still a good movie.

Picked up the blu ray of BDitFIM after payday last week. Watched it with my oldest nephew. I picked a couple of choices, he picked up a couple of choices, and we let the timer run out for one of 'em to see what would happen. We watched all seven endings in one sitting, since it was easy enough to backtrack & choose a different option to see how that would go. I thought it was a cool idea, but wouldn't want a lot of interactive movies in the future. I asked my nephew what he thought, and he said, "It wasn't worth twenty dollars."

Went out to Tyler Saturday for a double feature at the AMC. Last year I rented HDD befoe the sequel came out, because the trailer for the sequel looked cool. So, I have now seen both of those movies on the theater screen. And, yeah, I stll liked HDD, too.

Followed that with LHG on their BigD screen, which is larger than a regular screen but smaller than the IMAX. I have not read the book, so can't comment on how close it is, but the movie itself was pretty good. Its the second movie in a month where Jeffrey Donovan from Burn Notice has a supporting role, and I liked his character in Honest Thief more than the scum he plays here. And the trailer & movie poster give too much away, I think.

Yesterday, I took my youngest nephew & niece out to see Sean Connery in Goldfinger at the Lufkin Mall. Its one of my favorite James Bond movies, has been since I was a kid. It was their first time to watch a James Bond at all. It was great to watch it on a theater screen. My nephew said it was no Austin Powers, and the niece said it wasn't the best movie ever, but still pretty good.

The oldest nephew & I are working on a plan to see The Hunt for Red October, which is also showing at some AMC theaters this week.

Stolen By My Mother: The Kamiyah Mobley Story - C

I was really confused if the movie wanted me to feel bad for the kidnapper and hate the biological mother. It sets the latter up to be completely unlikeable. Does she expect her daughter to simply forget everything her "mother" had done for her in eighteen years and just jump into her arms? The characterization is so lopsided.

I was also confused why the daughter wanted nothing to do with her biological mother after she was the one who looked up her number and called her. Even if she just had some curiousity, she had to know that would happen.

Given that there was narration throughout, there were moments that could have been done through it to tighten up the plot.

AMC was showing Goldfinger and The Hunt for Red October after Sean Connery passed away. The local theaters were only showing James Bond, so I went to the next closest option, which was the AMC at the mall in Humble, just north of Houston.

First time watching the movie on the theater screen, too bad the picture quality sucked. Every exterior underwater scene was almost too dark to see anything. Still, its a good movie, and I'm glad I went to see it. I remember when the red VHS tapes came out.

Did not care much for EH. It was an interesting story, just didn't care for the narration & Eleven talking right at me during the movie.

Took my sister, her husband, the youngest nephew & niece to see ACS at the AMC Lufkin. We had all watched it before, but the first time for any of us to see it on a theater screen. I hadn't watched it in a couple of decades. Still a classic.

Watched the two American Graffiti movies the other night. I preferred the first one more than the sequel.

Watched two Clint Eastwood movies night before last, neither of 'em very good, though I did like The Gauntlet more than Tightrope.

Watched two not very funny comedy specials last night. Colin Quinn's was an interesting idea, but Sarah Cooper is better in small doses.

- edit -

Used my AMC Stubs membership for movies this weekend.

I went to see Come Play Friday night. An autistic boy's loneliness allows for a monster to cross over into reality after terrorizing him, his classmates, and his parents. Didn't care much for it. There were some good bits, and an interesting idea, but as with most horror movies, really stupid decisions and way too much darkness even when there shouldn't be.

Went out to Tyler yesterday for a double feature.

Watched The Holiday for the first time. If nothing else, gotta give the movie credit for being one of the few times a post sex couple has had an even sheet instead of being across the dude's waist to show off his chest and then angled up to cover the woman to her shoulders. So, this makes for my second holiday film of the season, too, after A Christmas Story last week.

Followed that with an IMAX viewing of The Croods sequel. That was actually pretty fun, I laughed quite a bit during the movie. May have to go see it again.

And it looks like the local AMCs will be showing Die Hard (1988) next week!

  • Nocture (2020) - 7/10 Black Swan and Whiplash but not as interesting and maybe throw a demon in there.
  • The Lie (2018) - 5/10 Blumhouse should have just left this one alone. A great cast with an awful script. It is a remake so I'm curious if the original German film is watchable.
  • Run (2020) - 8/10 Great cast. I think it could have been a little bit longer. It's from the same guys who made Searching, so it moves at a breakneck pace.
  • The Nest (2020) 7/10 Another fantastic cast but I was really disappointed in the resolution of the story. I was expecting more.
  • Greenland (2020) 8/10 Quite a good popcorn disaster flick. Gerard Butler trained for these roles in the womb.
  • Possessor (2020) 8/10 David Cronenberg is already making a name for himself. This is the most unsettling film I've seen all year.
  • Slice (2018) 4/10 It's awful. It's like an SNL skit with a budget.
  • Holidate (2020) 6/10 It is what it is
  • Possession (1981) 7/10 It's definitely a weird movie that's not for everyone. I feel like it's trying to be too vague. It doesn't succeed in that regard.
  • Rebecca (2020) 6/10 The more I think about it, the less I like it. They stripped everything away that would have made a good adaptation.
  • Host (2020) 5/10 This movie is way overrated on the horror films circuit. There just need to be more horror movies released soon.
  • His House (2020) 7/10 Lots of good ideas in this one, but I don't like my movies to be so weird that I can't follow everything. It's got too many Lynchian aspects to really rise about the "above average" mark for me.

Late Novmber, I got back to watching Doctor Who, specifically Jodie Whitaker's run. And I count the holiday specials as movies, so 'Resolution' makes the list.

Took my sister, youngest nephew & the niece to see Die Hard. Watched it a lot over the years, on rented VHS, and store bought DVD, but it was the first time I watched it on the theater screen. My youngest nephew does not agree that it is a Christmas movie, despite all evidence to the contrary.

Was supposed to have a date for the Elvis concert movie, but she ghosted on me. So, I went alone. I enjoyed it. The film has rehearsal & recording sessions, and then footage from six nights of performances in Las Vegas back in 1970.

Did not care much for Monster Hunter at all, though I did stay for a mid credit bonus scene that screams for a sequel, and waited for the end of the credits, just in case, but there wasn't anything there.

Watched Soul, the latest from Pixar, on Christmas morning. I thought it was pretty good, up until the ending. DId not care for that at all.

Went to see WW84 IMAX Christmas night. I liked it quite a bit, and stayed for the mid credit bonus. And I overheard the ticket guy tell some folks that it was a sold out show at 40% capacity. That makes it the largest theater crowd I've sat in since Covid-19 shut everything down.

In second was the Elvis concert movie, and third was the re-release of The Dark Knight I went to back in October.

Watched the latest standup special from Larry the Cable Guy. If ya like him, and his humor, you'll enjoy this, since its more of the same from him. I laughed quite a bit.

I was going to the movies during my days off this week, but overslept both days, so I missed out. So, that makes for 132 new to me movies for the year 2020. And I've got three tickets reserved for this weekend, to see Alien (1979), Fatale, and News of the World.
