Movies Seen in 2020

My wife made me watch the glorious Disney Channel original movie The 13th Year about a whiny Merman.

I went out to Kilgore yesterday, watched a couple of classics from the 1980s. I had the theater to myself for both movies, which used to be a rare thing for just one movie.

Almost had to miss ET, though, since it took over ten minutes for 'em to fix a technical issue with the sound, I almost walked out to get a refund.

And, of course, I've seen both before, on VHS, DVD, and basic cable over the years, but yesterday was the first time to see 'em at the theater, so they get added to the list for "new to me" movies.

4 Star Cinema will be showing Grease and The Wizard of Oz this week. I may go back out there for 'em. I've see TWoO at the theater a couple of times before, but is still a great musical & well worth watching. Haven't seen Grease on the big screen before, though.

What a waste of time. This is another Hunger Games-esque young adult book turned into movie, but this movie lacks the good writing and the good acting. This drops I Am Number Four into bad teen flick that I can't believe I wasted two hours of my life watching.

It was a fun movie, interesting, but I had real problems following a lot of the accounting talk that really didn't need to be there to drive the action forward.

I didn't see the need for Affleck's character to be autistic when frankly the shitty parenting from his father could've done the job just as well. It seemed like an added bit just to give him the ability to figure out the money laundering quickly.

Casablanca (1942) - 4 Star Cinema
Grease (1978) - 4 Star Cinema

Went out to Studio Movie Grill in Tyler yesterday with the youngest nephew & niece to watch Iron Man. It was their first time to see it in a theater, since they were too young when it came out in '08.

Went to the 4 Star Cinema in Kilgore tonight for two classics.

Casablanca - first time watching that all the way through after decades of seeing bits & pieces at a time. I didn't realize how much of pop culture could be traced back to that movie. "We'll Always Have Paris" was a freaking Star Trek episode title! Other stuff, too, that has been borrowed, referenced, or outright stolen from this movie.

Grease - been watching this movie from time to time since I was seven, eight years old. First time to see it on a theater screen tonight. I was one of seven folks in the theater, and the only one without a date. But that's okay, because I bet no one else there has been told they're funny by Olivia Newton-John herself.

I was talking to the 4 Star Cinema manager tonight, told her they won't see me so often when the AMC theaters reopen. Tyler will open in a couple of weeks, Nacogdoches & Lufkin will open in the first week of September. She was shocked, and said, "You're going to cheat on us with AMC!" And I told her, "I'm a Stubs member! I've been cheating on AMC with y'all!"

Does watching Hamilton on Disney+ count? I really haven't had the motivation to watch movies lately, mostly because I need someone to watch with me or my attention strays (curse my autistic/ADHD brain). I know my dad would love to watch the LOTR extended editions with me, but I can't think of anyone in my family who'd be willing to sit through Seven Samurai.

Anyone going to watch either New Mutants or Train to Busan 2: Peninsula?

Curious not just for the movie itself but the experience. They'll be playing at AMC in Chicago.

"We'll Always Have Paris" was a freaking Star Trek episode title! Other stuff, too, that has been borrowed, referenced, or outright stolen from this movie.

But how did you like it? For me, it's one of those movies that is SO frequently referenced in pop culture that I figured it can't possibly have any impact left. But then I saw it and I was absolutely blown away. For me, it's less about the romance and more about the side characters. Humphrey Bogart is one of the greatest movie stars of all time and Casablanca is his greatest work, and yet Claude Rains steals every single scene! "What happened, Rick? Did you abscond with the church funds? Did you run off with the Senator's wife? I like to think you killed a man. It's the romantic in me." :D

I'd like to see New Mutants but I'm not sure that any theaters in the metro Phoenix area are going to be open. The Harkins website says that some of their northern Arizona theaters will be open, like in Flagstaff & Prescott. But we may be SOL here in the Valley. :(

Last weekend, they were doing a pop-up drive-in at the Chandler Fashion Center parking lot. They were showing Iron Man on Friday, The Avengers on Saturday, and The Greatest Showman on Sunday. I was up for going but the evening showings were already sold out and 10:45pm seems a bit late for me these days.

But how did you like it?

I didn't like or dislike it. Oddly enough, since so much of it felt familiar thanks to pop culture, I wasn't moved by the movie one way or the other. Guess it hurts that one of my favorites, When Harry Met Sally completely spoils the ending, and I've watched that movie annually for the last twenty plus years.

Dirty Dancing (1987) - Cinemark Lufkin

Watched the ultimate edition of BvS the other night, over three hours long. There were a few changes here & there, but nothing that really improved the movie at all. And three hours! Holy crap! Makes me wonder how bad the Snyder Cut of Justice League will be when it comes out next year.

BvTF was better, really liked how William Shatner voiced Harvey Dent, and the animators based the look off of Captain Kirk from the 1960s.

Went to the Cinemark in Lufkin when they reopened last week to watch the first Harry Potter movie. Seen it before on DVD, first time watching it in a theater. Not too bad a movie going experience, despite a few wonky special effects shots. Still don't like Harry Potter as a character, and the scoring system for the house cup is just too arbitrary.

Went to AMC Tyler yesterday for the last IMAX screening of The New Mutants. I liked the movie, kind of bummer there probably won't be a sequel. There isn't a mid or end credit bonus scene, either.

And I think its funny that Emma. was the last movie I saw at AMC Tyler before everything shut down, and The New Mutants is the first I go back there for, and the same actress starred in both movies as Emma and Magik.

Went to Cinemark Lufkin earlier tonight for the Fathom Events screening of Dirty Dancing. We used to rent it all the time on VHS when I was a kid, first time seeing it on a theater screen. And I had the theater all to myself. Added bonus, since they aren't offering refills, they've lowered the prices on large drinks & popcorn.

Will be going to see Tenet sometime this week, either Thursday or Friday. No firm plan for it yet.

Started off with two trips out to the AMC Tyler, since their showtimes start late in the day & are staggered to be near impossible to see more than one movie at a time right now. Watched Unhinged and The Personal History of David Copperfield on Thursday, went back last night for Tenet in IMAX.

Unhinged was a fairly decent thriller, Russell Crowe played a good villain. Gotta wonder, though, has he let himself go that much, or was it a fat suit? Lots of car crashes, some cool stunt driving, and quite a body count.

I was looking forward to TPHoDC when the trailers were coming out last spring, because of the cast. Too bad the movie was deathly dull. Hugh Laurie as Mr. Dick was the highlight.

A couple of years ago, I was working with this girl, and she was talking about what she had done on her days off and upcoming plans but kept messing up her tenses, and she would apologize. I told her not to stress about it, I understood what she meant, since the overnight shift is the only time that you worked yesterday, today & tomorrow in a single day. She looked at me, and her eye twitched, and she yelled, "Dammit, Tom! I think you broke my brain!" Tenet made my eye twitch, and it may have broken my brain. Going to have to go see it again, now that I know what's up with some of it.

I was going to watch the new Mulan via Disney+ until I saw that it would be free for regular customers starting in December. I've waited this long, I can go another couple of months.

This was another 90's action movie and yes, I'm the person that takes writing into account when grading an action movie.

We know that the movie has to get Ashley Judd to prison, but she seems to be pretty easily convicted. I guess this is 1999, before the in-depth forensics we have today, but the prosecutor seemed to be really harping on the "she killed him for the insurance money" trope and it easily won.

Is her best friend so in love with her husband that she'll basically frame her for murder and spend the next few years hiding under assumed names, separating Judd from her son?

Judd's character also has this remarkable ability to luck into information she needs for her search or a way to escape. In the art gallery, she figures out how to click into the information she needs when it was previously established she couldn't use the Internet. As a convicted felon, she is able to take a plane and not be noticed at all at a ritzy bachelor auction. Following that, a bolt of lighting serendipitously allows her to realize that she is being boxed in by the police. She and Bruce Greenwood are also able to have this conversation where she's demanding her child back in the middle of this auction and no one overhears. And she is able to go and get money from her mom and the truck. Isn't that the first place someone would look?

The script also doesn't flesh out the Tommy Lee Jones character either. It makes a plot point of saying he lost his daughter because he was a drunk, but it never uses that to inform his decisions or why he suddenly believes Judd. He is turned into the law chasing her and the character doesn't have the pizzaz of his character in The Fugitive to save it.

It also wants us to believe that the New Orleans officer that teams up with Jones for the last third of the movie is going to be okay to let Judd walk away, even though she had escaped several times to this point, even remarking that she owns the hotel now. Did he just take Jones' word for it?

I've seen Tenet twice now, I think I mostly understand it. Gotta say, the 2D version is better than IMAX, the music wasn't so loud, and it was easier to hear the dialogue.

WoBW was not a very good teen drama, and its a stupid ass title considering there are only a handful of scenes in the bathroom of the school, and only one where dude had a mental break. Glad I didn't watch the trailer before the movie, since it shows stuff from the final scenes of the movie. Hate that.

Went to the Fathom Events 40th anniversary screening of Airplane!. I had the theater to myself. The movie is still funny. I've seen it on VHS, DVD, and basic cable over the decades, but this was the first time watching it at a theater. There were a couple of technical issues, and I got a pass to see a movie for free.

Used my AMC Stubs to take my niece to see The New Mutants on Sunday. Second time watching it, her first. She liked it.

I went to see the re-release of Black Panther on Monday. Still a beautiful movie. Definitely in my Top Five for the MCU.

Followed that Monday night with TBHG. It was a cute, cookie cutter romantic comedy that begs, borrows and outright steals from other, better romantic comedies.

Not sure what I'll be watching this next week at the theater.

I had seen Chadwick Boseman in 42 years ago, but I didn't really remember it. I was blown away by his performance here. I didn't know him as an actor, but its a damn shame we lost him. He and Josh Gad gave excellent performances with the content they were given.

The content is where I have problems. I read that the descendants of the character Gad played commented that a lot of what happened to that character in the movie never actually happened. I have problems when historical movies embellish for the sake of trying to make their movie better, in their opinion. People like Marshall did amazing things. Tell me their story without changing things. It takes the shine off a movie that was really good otherwise.

I also gained an appreciation for Sterling K. Brown. After suffering through Randall in This Is Us, it was great to see him do something different.

Bill & Ted Face the Music - Studio Movie Grill

Went to see Tenet again, on the BigD screen at AMC Tyler. That's three viewings, every option available in the area.

Picked up the Bill & Ted double feature DVD at Wal Mart for five bucks. Had never watchd either of 'em, just bits & pieces over the years. Both movies were kind of dumb, but I was curious about the third movie. The trailer caught my attention. I've already sold off the DVD set.

Went out to AMC Tyler last week to watch the 4K release of Akira. Not what I was expecting, but still pretty good.

Went to a 40th Anniversary screening of TESB, which was the 2004 DVD release with the special edition changes from the 1980 movie and 1997 re-release. First time watching Episode V on the theater screen, leaving Return of the Jedi left to watch. Maybe in a few years for that anniversary...

Did not care for Infidel much at all.

Went out to the Studio Movie Grill in Tyler the other night for the last show on the last day to watch the third Bill & Ted movie. It was better than I expected it to be after watching the first two movies. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Tried to go out to watch Back to the Future at the Cinemark Lufkin last night, but technical difficulties and an hour long wait, I gave up & left. I did get a voucher, though.

The Most Hated Woman In America - B+

Like the last movie I had watched, Marshall, The Most Hated Woman In America revolves around a figure from American history, but it doesn't fully understand that story, in this case, skipping pieces here and there and adding in other people's stories in an attempt to pad out the run time.

It was still a fun movie. Melissa Leo absolutely shines at the lead character. Josh Lucas shifts from being a likeable kidnapper to dark convict with incredible ease.

There wasn't a part of the movie that I can put my finger on and say I hated, but it tried to incorporate too many side characters into the movie and give them their own storylines. Adam Scott is a fine actor and plays his reporter role well, but was he pivotal to the story that was supposed to be a bio pic about Leo's character. Peter Fonda shows up for two seconds as a crooked preacher, but again, were his scenes necessary?

Watch it for the acting, especially Leo and Lucas, but you'll learn more about the woman by doing a Wikipedia search.

Haven't updated for several months. Here goes:
The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020) - 5 - Unnecessary sequel with outdated jokes that tries too hard.
Spontaneous (2020) - 7 - Quirky spontaneous combustion film carried by Katherine Langford.
The Owners (2020) - 4 - Maisie Williams led garbage home invasion movie that's been done to death.
Swallow (2019) - 9 - This movie has been marketed very poorly as a horror film for some reason. It's not.
Becky (2020) - 6 - This just didn't do it for me. Way too long and even a good cast can't pull the script together.
You Should Have Left (2020) - 3 - Utter trash of a movie.
Greyhound (2020) - 7 - Good, if ultimately forgettable
Antebellum (2020) - 5 - Another case of misleading marketing and a great idea with a poor script. Cinematography is top notch, though.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020) - 8 - Not Kaufman's best, but very enjoyable.

First Blood (1982) on Blu-ray.

Quite a compelling movie. That was well written, beautifully shot and the cast all turned in great performances, especially Stallone.
