Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

I'm not too hot on "character backgrounds" or "origin stories" anyway. What does it add to the adventures themselves if we know the shoe size the heroine wears? Should we really care if her parents are alive and named Hans and Gretel or not? Generally, the direct tie-in comics and novels have just suffered from having to be subservient to the primary material; unrelated comics and novels work much better. But sometimes comics do nice things with graphics, especially when it comes to future technology and vistas. Starships we are not going to see in the series proper are a good thing as such. Although those merely being copy-pasted from STO dilutes that somewhat.

The two STO designs in the comic were used on purpose according to one of the game developers. It was a collaboration, and not just the artist using any post-nemesis design they were allowed.

STO added a unique ship design from the DSC comics a few months ago, it’s probably a continuation of that partnership.

So I wouldn’t take its appearance in the comic to be an indication that it will show up in the show.

The comic is non-canon any how. Yes it’s based off backstory information given by the writers room, but so were the DSC comics, and a couple of the novels, and they were contradicted by the show.

I'm really failing to understand why it is apparently so absolutely horrible that for the first time, we may have a measly three issue comic series that is actually considered an Official part of Star Trek Canon?

Well, we first see Raffi, the new Uniforms, Laris and Zhaban in the comics, so it makes all that a part of canon.

Comics are not canon. They are (sticking to the church nomenclature) apocrypha. Basically, stuff that may have happened, or are background, but are not official or binding and cannot be used to contradict or support canon.

Anything depicted in Countdown that also shows up in Picard are canon solely because they are in Picard. There is no transitive property that extends to things not shown on screen.

Because CBS official stance is that they’re not, so they’re not.

No one from production has said they’re canon. They’ve said they can be ‘considered close to canon’, but that’s it. Close, but no cigar.

This happened with countdown 2009 as well, and the Discovery novels/comics.

Because 'canon' has seemingly become the most important thing in the Star Trek universe. It has gotten to the point it is irritating that something has to be canon to be worthwhile.

Because 50 years of history has taught us we don't. But as said before, whether canon or not, doesn't or shouldn't affect the enjoyment you get from it.

It may be that for the first time, these particular comics ARE considered an Official part of Canon.
No one considers them canon. Not the writers, not the producers. Just because we haven't see any contradictions yet, doesn't mean we won't get one right there in episode 3. "Hey Raffi, I haven't seen you since you have been my second in command on USS Derivative..."

Can we get back to discussing ships rather than nerdraging over the destination of Canon?

So does anyone have any screen captures of the utopia plantia shipyards we say in episode 2?

There where some interesting looking ships being built.

Will be interesting to see what we get on Thursday/Friday.

We know they have history but we dont know where from.

If just feels like it may be a setup for whats to come.

Otherwise why on earth would they have an Odyssey class when they could just use a Sovereign or any number of other classes that we know are in service at the same time, why specifically use a class that ends up being used for the F in STO and more importantly why use it 24 years before the class is even supposed to be launched in STO.

It smells a bit fishy to me but could be nothing.

It would certainly be a big surprise if they did and I am all for it, it would practically scream spinoff as well, just think of the possibilities for CBS if they have both an original Enterprise 1701 show with Pike and a Enterprise 1701-F show with someone else we know.

Licence to print money for CBS if they did, which sort of begs the question why they didnt do that in the first place.
It's just cross promotion between IDW and Cryptic Studios (the latter are the developers of STO). At the last STLV some of the STO Devs spoke to some of the IDW folks because one of them had seen a STD crossover comic using the Stammets character on a STD era science ship; and the STO Devs wanted to put that ship in the game, and did as a $30 T6 ship in their RMT store for the game. I's sure some players who knew the connection said, "Oh, it's a ship from this IDW STD comic"...perhaps leading to someone looking for and buying the comic.

So, yeah, I'm sure IDW used the Odyssey Class in the comic with Cryptic's and CBS' permission knowing full well it may lead to new fans reading the comic, asking about the ship; and finding out it's from a F2P game called Star Trek Online - leading to some maybe trying out the game and ultimately spending some money in it here and there.

So yeah, no 'grand plan' beyond a little cross promotion.

Certainly possible that it was done to help STO and vice versa.

We will know soon enough as we wont have to wait long for the flashback.

I think we would have seen it in a trailer already if it's in. They've shown a lot of other Space scenes.

I doubt they’ve shown all the space stuff. An Enterprise or any other Starfleet ship would be a big deal.
Yeah, E-D appeared for 3 frames in one of the teasers and it was a HUUGE deal. And that was a flashback to a ship that has been destroyed IRL for 25 years.
If/when CBS wants to show the next Enterprise, they will make a BIG deal out of it and it probably will only be hinted at in a trailer and not actually seen.

I would expect them to keep it quiet to preserve the surprise, even if we do see something it may not be a full shot or possibly just a reference to it.

That is all it will need though.

Alternatively they could avoid all mention of it at all which in and of itself would be a bit suspicious given the situation, then reveal it in a later episode.

We know we are going to get a flashback as we have seen a clip with them both in uniform but we dont know how long the flashback will be, how Picard introduces Raffi to the rest of the team will also be something to watch out for.

Will he introduce her as his former XO on board his last command or actually state her rank, will he say the name of the ship or keep it unknown.

He was an Admiral so he would be travelling around on a substantial vessel as the head of the rescue fleet, I would love if its the Enterprise E on its last mission or an Odyssey class, I doubt its the Enterprise F back then as the Odyssey class would be brand spanking new in 2385 and the Enterprise E would still be in service.

The Enterprise F could exist in 2399 though.

Just imagine the reaction on the internet if we do see it.
