He could have a family onboard his ship. They’re still young for that era. Most would be nearing, if not over, forty years of service. I don't see an issue with them going on with their lives.

I think the "problem" here is the TOS movies keeping the same characters in largely the same places they were in the TV show right up until ST6. It was always silly, but it set expectations with some people.
(Even on the TNG side, after the S2 reshuffle, most of the characters stayed in the same positions all the way up until Nemesis - even Worf kept finding excuses to end up back on the Enterprise, having moved to DS9/the Defiant and supposedly left Starfleet in the final episode thereof.)

Same. Expectations are fine but keeping things static makes no sense.I understand the expectations, but I don't understand the "dark" timeline because people retire. I imagine very few of the characters we saw in the 24th century shows would still be in Starfleet in 2399.
Yeah for the launch of the Enterprise B in Generations. He retired after The Undiscovered Country. He was there as a publicity stunt.
Hopefully Worf is still in Starfleet. He’s no coward to run off when things get tough.
It would be interesting to know which rank Riker held at retirement....throw a little sop to the lit verse and make him an admiral.
I get that but it’s only been 20 years. If it was 50 then I would expect them to be all done.It isn't about being a coward. It is about father time and the next generation. Eventually, all of us are moved on by the combination of the two.
Just to be clear, I referred to the TOS crew being essentially static, always reverting to the same position on the same ship (and direct successors thereof) as "silly". I wasn't saying it made sense!Same. Expectations are fine but keeping things static makes no sense.
Bringing up kids on a Starship or space station is not going to be for everyone and brings challenges of its own.He could have a family onboard his ship. They’re still young for that era.

Would be cool to see Picard go down with his ship as it would be a fitting sendoff, just like we sort of saw with Kirk on the Enterprise B, leaving the much younger Harriman on the bridge.Out of all the main crew, I imagine only LaForge is still in Starfleet. But it seems there isn't going to be a lot of focus on Starfleet adventures with Picard, not yet anyway. I still think the Enterprise will turn up eventually, hopefully the Enterprise-E, and we get to see it go out in style.
I like to think Worf got over his midlife crisis and is paling around with Martok still.
That’s only somewhat true. Chekov was the first Officer in the Reliant, but after the incidents in WoK preferred to stay with Kirk on the Enterprise our of loyalty. Sulu eventually did leave for the Excelsior.Just to be clear, I referred to the TOS crew being essentially static, always reverting to the same position on the same ship (and direct successors thereof) as "silly". Except when somebody needs a blood transfusion...Hopefully Worf is still in Starfleet. He’s no coward to run off when things get tough.
Now Worf should be the captain of the Enterprise. Would be a cool misdirect. You think the Enterprise comes in to stop Picard and his renegades only for it to reveal Worf as the captain.
"If you were any other man, I'd kill you where you stand. Instead I'm gonna arrest you."Only if Worf hauls them off to jail.
I always get confused by the timings of this... Did Kirk retire after The Undiscovered Country, and re-join prior to Generations, or was the gap somewhere else?
The Nexus fantasy of Kirk at his cabin with Antonia was supposed to have been something like 12 years before the Enterprise-B launch in 2293. This placed the moment being recreated as happening between TMP and TWOK, suggesting that Kirk had temporarily left Starfleet sometime during that period. He retired after The Undiscovered Country. He was there as a publicity stunt.
