Unpopular Trek opinions game

Juliana Tainer proved Soong got it "right", and long before Zimmerman.

So, perhaps Soong only 'got it right' when he built her (at least his 4th attempt, probably several more). How's this for a speculative timeline?

He builds B-4. but that one is obviously too "primitive"- and perhaps never was meant as a serious fully fledged prototype, but more as an experimental attempt.
He builds Lore. Whatever else you may think of Lore, he seems to have noticeably less difficulty "getting" emotions than Data does, at least to the extent that he uses those to manipulate people, so in that sense he seems "more advanced" than Data. However, he turns out to be unstable, and even dangerous / 'evil', so Soong deactivates him.
In his next atttempt, Soong builds in several safeguards and limitations that have to make it impossible for Data to go down the same path as Lore. However, they also limit his functioning in the ways we see on the show.
Finally, he builds Juliana, which/who seems to have the best of both Lore and Data.

As for holodeck characters, on the other hand, we know that they never felt quite "real" till the Bynars created Minuet. The Bynars probably were more advanced in computer technology than the Federation. Perhaps traces of the Minuet program were recovered, and reverse engineered (or perhaps not even understood but used as a 'black box') to allow for more realistic character generation from that time forward. The creation of self-awareness of a holodeck character is never explained on the other hand but seems to be possible even as a side effect to an uncarefully phrased command (Elementary, dear Data). The EMH becoming a sapient entity also was not really planned.

So creating self-awareness (or sapience, or whatever you have to call it) in itself doesn't seem to be the hard part in the Trek universe (even B-4 probably was that), but getting your entity to act believably human with the right mix of capacities/ moral behaviour/etc.

On the one hand, we have dr. Soong "getting there" using nothing but his own power and perseverance, in many attempts, and finally succeeding, while the holodeck "line of evolution" seems to mainly consist of accidental side effects (and perhaps a gift from a more advanced alien race).

My unpopular opinion...

Discovery’s flaws are given a pass by a lot of Trek fans because we are happy just to have new “canon” Trek stories available. And that as more new Trek becomes available the like of Discovery will wane.

10 years ago the idea of re-designing the original Enterprise (with its own R2D2 type fixit bots), making Spock space-dyslexic, the spore drive, having a character or characters drop f-bombs, everything with the Klingons, etc...would have more of the fan base losing their shit than there is. Especially for a show set do close to TOS.

I don't entirely agree with this. Discovery gets ripped apart for doing things previous series/movies have done which are now accepted by the fanbase all the fucking time. Ironically given time these same 'crimes' against the franchise that Discovery is guilty of will be fine when Trek is redone in another 20 - 30 years.

Ripping apart the new kid on the block is the favorite pastime of far too many star trek fans. You have to give them a few years to get used to new things.

I always thought the TOS bridge looked best in The Cage. I never liked the bright reds and the blacks that were added to the doors, railings and Navigation/Helm stations by the third episode, The Corbomite Manuever. Had Star Trek made it into the 70's perhaps the loud colors would have been toned down.

Yup. And onto more interesting stuff. Here's a doozy... Unpopular(-ish?) Opinion: I like the TOS Enterprise bridge better than the DSC Enterprise bridge.

I'm Nixon and I'm going to China.
I honestly agree, im rather abvilaint about TOS but its iconic bridge for a reason

And maybe some shag carpet added!!

My take on the TOS Enterprise bridge vs the DSC Enterprise bridge:

Couldn't they have made the tech more advanced/believable to a 21st century audience while maintaining the 1960s aesthetic? The differences between the two go far beyond the fact that today's audiences find the TOS bridge technology to be comparatively simplistic and unbelievable. DSC changed the mood and ambiance as well.

IDK Mirror darkly didn't have a problem using a class constitution class bridge

^^this

It has a great look of militaristic professionalism, especially for the time. (Notice 1978's Battlestar Galactica and how it kept similar gray hues and had a more circular flight deck/bridge, added a rotating center dais, some CRT screens (some in RGB color!), and other bits and bobs to make it look as authentic as possible - and all of which looks fantastic - but they would not have done that for TMP either way... plus, the 1701-Refit has its own glorious look as well...)

RCA, being a sponsor, probably wanted the sets made more colorful to sell more televisions. Can't blame them, I have a certain affection for the eye-popping color despite the more austere original set, which is composed very well with the corridor and sickbay lighting. But it's the only time it could work, faddish with the entry of color TV...

That's a great point as well, how would the color palette fare? Based on existing footage from Phase II's pilot, they were definitely keeping the red/blue/yellow shiny happy hues for the uniforms as well as the mid-tone gray walls that had bright red doors. I tried looking up youtube for the production test footage but nothing relevant popped up. :(

By the time Phase II was phased out (*snarf*) and TMP was made, they switched to those bland pastels, which left nothing to the imagination and in sci-fi I want to engage my fascination... I mean, imagination... :guffaw:

And maybe some shag carpet added!!

:guffaw::guffaw:

And a disco ball hanging down from the center! They can call the place "USS Studio NC-17 01-X"!

I think they could have, if they were willing to change the color scheme and the way the computer displays look.

However, I think that there would be complaints regardless and they allowed the creative team to explore a litle bit more rather than just hold on to nostalgia. As much as I love episodes like "In A Mirror, Darkly" and "Trials and Tribble-ations" I do not think that that look would hold an audience for more than an episode. That might be an unpopular opinion, but I can live with it.

Thing is, we have no proof that the current iteration needed to hold the audience for more than a couple of episodes. There's still no word of a Pike series on the horizon, and the longer they wait, the probability likely lessens that such a show will ever exist.

No, there is not. There is just my reckless speculation. Certainly I would love to see them do an update style TOS while keeping the same shapes and forms. But, that's me.
