Reading this whole Romulans are Synths and Sonji is pregnant with Narek's baby theory makes me think of Bladerunner 2049; Deckard's & Rachel's daughter.

An interesting episode and in some ways better than the previous one. We got to know more details about the series' present. Unfortunately there was a problem known from many episodes of TNG. As viewers we are supposed to be on Picard's side in his moral crusade when in fact the truth lies on the other side and Picard comes out as a hypocrite criticizing the behaviour he himself has done many times (here comes out the flaw in the episodic TV episode in which as viewers we should not remember the actions of characters from other episodes). The Admiral was right to treat him like this.
Furthermore, she behaved correctly in informing the SI about the conversation. She couldn't have known like the audience that Starfleet Intelligence is at best useless. :-)

Grade: 8/10

They really did build a worker class of andorids/synths. Federation starships built by Android slave labour. Holy shitballs.

To be fair, the non-Synth redshirts don't seem to have it much better. It's just that they need to eat and sleep, while Synths can (and might prefer to) spend that time simply sitting down together. (Echoes of Asimov's "That Thou Art Mindful of Him?")

Looks like someone overrode F8 when the attack began rather than him acting alone.

Indeed. Or then it's the sort of flash any madman gets in his eyes before starting to shoot... Is that a gun he's using, or an optionally lethal tool?

Really liking the diversity of aliens everywhere.

...But the very same woman, with the upper half of her face white, is seen on the Cube and stepping out of a transporter next to Picard at SF HQ. Another Advanced Synth pair? Or is "they all look alike" not limited to Andorians and Tellarites?

Is the "Romulan Free State" is the surviving Romulan government?

One of them, at any rate.

Starfleet infiltrated by Romulan whatever-whatever-double-secret-android-hating agents? Okay cool.

To be sure, it seems Commodore Oh thinks this is a fine arrangement that doesn't amount to treason. Perhaps rather standard in the intel circles? "We have our agents, and some of theirs, and some of theirs that pretend to be ours, and some of ours that pretend to be theirs. And some of them are double or triple agents on top of that. Plus I think one of them is faking it, and the poor Wurzelnik has forgotten which side he is on. We sorta get along."

Why do they hate synthetics? I wonder if Vulcans are perfect synths, and it was some kind of synthetic revolution that initiated the schism. Surak was perhaps the Noonien Soong of the Vulcan people.

Or the Sargonians built the Vulcans, just like they wanted to have android bodies built for themselves.

I liked this episode but it was definitely a bridge episode and not quite as good as last week so I rate it an 8.

I especially liked the opening on Mars and whatever is happening on the Borg cube. That's a disaster waiting to happen. One thing I didn't like is that this episode just seemed to end randomly (might have been better to be connected to the next episode but of course that would result in a very long episode).

I really like the theory that the Romulans or Vulcans are synthetics. I'm sure if this turns out to be the case there will be a vocal group of haters, but I love things that add to canon and this would be a nice twist.

I've read some very vitriolic reviews over at Trekmovie. I really don't understand the fan base anymore. Too fast, too slow, not enough fan service, too much fan service. It's extremely depressing.

This is exactly what the Star Trek fan base has been since at least TNG. With Star Trek, you can't please everyone no matter what you do. The gate keeping really annoys me too though.

My comment had nothing to do with where Enterprise is filmed, merely the fact that many current productions are filmed in Vancouver.

Actually Toronto has much more TV and movie productions than Vancouver these days.

So many misspellings of poor Soji's name in this thread!
I see a few got Raffi and Rizzo mixed up as well.

Its a new series so its to be expected, everyone knows who they mean so its no big deal.

The only problem with the whole secret synths hiding amongst the Humanoids is that its been done before multiple times, I dont mind going around again but I can understand why some are a bit disappointed.

Wasn't it both? He traveled through time and they didn't believe him specifically because he had Irumodic Syndrome. They dismissed his claims as yet another delusion caused by the illness he already had.

And as the effect of the syndrome affects Picard more (likely in future seasons), not only he's going to struggle to find anyone in Starfleet willing to listen to him, but many of his confidants - both the old TNG crew and the newbies joining him in his new voyage - would also begin to doubt him as well.

It is a good rationale to have
Robert Picardo returns in S2 (as some has rumored).
Not only he could see things from the perspective of AI/synth beings, he could also treat Picard as the disease is progressing and getting worse.

Wow that was a quick 45 minutes.

Looks like someone overrode F8 when the attack began rather than him acting alone.

If you read the last installment of the 'Countdown' comics, you'll get some clue on who was likely overrode the Martian synths and set them on course to the path of murdering and destroying anything in their path.

"Cheeky fuckers" I love that Irish Romulan ex-Tal Shiar woman.

My theory is Picard sent Zhaban and Laris to Ireland for an intensive English language course before they started working full-time in his vineyard. Along the way she picked up some Irish slangs :hugegrin:

Not entirely sure what's happening on the Borg cube. Are the ex-drone workers there by choice or slaves?

I guess we'll find out next week. I think some like Hugh are working on the cube by choice, but others are not there voluntarily. Some might be guinea pigs for whatever experiment Narek and his crew are running aboard the cube.

Is the "Romulan Free State" is the surviving Romulan government?

I think they're the official surviving Romulan government, but the Romulan refugees seem to be fragmented into multiple groups with numerous political allegiances and agendas, so I think there are rebel Romulan groups scattered all over the Alpha quadrant.

Parallel to contemporary Libya and Somalia after their long-term dictators were ousted. Even though both have official regimes recognized by the West, there are dozens of militia/rebel groups on the ground fighting each other and competing for power.

Wow that admiral hates Picard. She was trembling with rage. 2 old people yelling at each other.

I have a feeling Picard and Admiral Clancy have been feuding with each other for a very long time, She also reminds me of Picard's long-standing feud with Admiral Necheyev back during the TNG years.

Personally I think they should've invited Natalya Nogulich to replay her instead of casting a new actress and a new character, but I understand the show runners would prefer to invite more key TNG cast members to reprise their roles, as they don't come cheap ;).

Hawaiians are the luckiest. They'll be able to watch, as soon as it drops, during a normal hour in the evening.

Yet another reason to want to go to Hawaii. Besides the weather, the overall atmosphere, and the luaus. We need music to go with this...

i heard the volcanos are fun, too

Well we all remember the Romulan plan in TNG to infiltrate Federation society thru Vulcan. I suspect the Commodore may be a part of that. Is she a Vulcan? Section 31 operative? A Romulan? IDK. Clearly the Lt who is the sister of Narek is Romulan despite her rounded ears. Not surprisingly, the Romulan Blade Runners are part of an Op, possibly a Section 31/Tal Shiar operation.

to me she looks like a useful idiot who can be manipulated - if she was an asset they wouldn't have talked about taking her out on such a casual matter

I actually think that this may have been part of the point that both Picard and the admiral were partially correct and partially incorrect. Picard may have been correct that the right thing to do would have been to provide as much help to the Romulans as possible, but the admiral is also correct that if Federation members are already unhappy AND you have just lost the majority of the rescue fleet, that the rescue may have become untenable. Picard (as leader of the rescue fleet) had a vested interest in helping the Romulans and may have even made promises he felt obligated to keep. The other admirals may have felt that the decimation of their main--or at least major--shipyard justified pulling out. Picard, who has disobeyed orders and even resigned before over moral arguments (such as in Insurrection) probably assumed that the leadership would acquiesce and reinstate him for the rescue mission. They didn't this time and he was too stubborn to admit he overstepped. I personally liked the fact that both parties are in grey areas from an ethical perspective and that Picard lost the fight on this occasion. I don't think we necessarily have to agree with Picard's decision as he is still the protagonist but not just a one dimensional "hero" in this case.

No, it should be harder. It's a FEDERATION. The EU is not. It has a unified government, the EU does not. The analogy is a state leaving the US.
No, you're just wrong. EU has government, it is called European Commission. UFP is much more analogous to EU than USA. It is a collective of different states with their own traditions an political cultures. If a member state wants to leave for stupid reasons, they can.

Unless it's as I suggested and they had a run-in with the Borg a few millennia ago. Then it makes perfect sense.

yep - the borg having not met so many species could have been barely managable for the romulans but why did they retreat into another quadrant?

I agree with you but given that this show is based off TNG, I think it's more understandable here than with DSC. I treat it like I'm learning how to speak a foreign language.

Yeah...this is why I've always asserted (even when I was a teenager and the show was in first-run) that there is a huge difference between Picard's perceptions of what the Federation is and what it actually is. I think most fans just buy the truth as whatever Picard droned on about (utopia, evolved sensibilities, no money because we're all here to better ourselves, etc etc etc) rather than taking what has actually has been portrayed on screen about the Federation as evidence.

As Lily Sloan said about the whole thing, "Bullshit..."

About Commodore Oh (very strange name). I really hope she is neither Vulcan nor Romulan. Maybe some other Vulcanoid, Debrune, Mintakan or whatever.

Why not? We've seen PLENTY of a-hole Vulcans. They are a race of billions, with their own failings, shortcomings, and issues. It's been like that since Valeris in TUC 29 years ago, and it's been shown that way ever since.

They can justify any kind of behavior in the name of "logic."

I

The second episode was not as, ahem, engaging as the first, but it was still pretty good. There were a couple of moments where they almost seemed to poke fun at the idea the kind of sequel most TNG fans actually want to see. First, Picard goes to this year's token crabby Admiral and requests to be reinstated and given a ship-- and is promptly accused of fucking hubris and sent packing. Then later, one of his Romulan caretakers suggests that he contact members of his old Enterprise crew and he soundly rejects that notion on the grounds that they would be loyal and want to help. Okay. Personally, I would have preferred that scenario, but this is the scenario we got and so far it's doing okay.
.

My favorite thing about the new versions of Star Trek (since 2009 and running) has been exactly this. I love that they subvert expectations and challenge the fans. Star Trek in 2004 had totally run its course under the old style, pacing, philosophy, and approach. I'm a huge fan, and even I was totally done with it. I'm always thrilled when they sort of jab us (the fans) purposefully. It's the only reason I'm still here.

I hear you just cancel your subscription to the Federation. And then in a bit they offer a free trial. Oh wait that’s CBS. It’s canon!!

All this talk about "it can't be that easy to leave the Federation" is frankly ridiculous. These aren't states, they're entire worlds with their own governments, millions of years of history, culture, etc etc etc. And what is the Federation...? They're going to deny someone the ability to exit (how would they even stop them)? No, I think the UFP is an extremely fragile thing, because if member worlds think things are going south....they can literally just say "we're not playing any more," so it makes things MUCH more complicated to manage politically.

And frankly, that's far more interesting dramatically as well.

I just now looked it up to see what the heck you were on about. So who's doing the promoting here?

You can't seriously be comparing a multi billion dollar franchise uncritically referencing a conspiracy theory to a person on an internet forum calling it out. That's the same fallacy as the people who shout "Look at the tolerant left they won't tolerate my saying LGBT shouldn't exist on twitter!"

Oh, some conspiracy theories are dangerous. Pizzagate got out of hand and Alex Jones' vile treatment of the families of the Sandy Hook victims is one of the most shameful incidents of a conspiracy theory leading to defamation and misery for innocents. I'm on record in favor of mandatory infant and childhood immunizations and fines or even jail time for parents who refuse to vaccinate but aside from a select handful of theories that actually threaten lives or health or both or slander to the point of court action being required to get justice for one's defamation I'm not much motivated to penalize or criminalize other conspiracy beliefs.

Still waiting for someone to show where I said conspiracy theories should be criminalized...
