i have just started watching the Original series. I'm shocked as to the risqué outfits the people wear. Mostly women but some men. How did they get away with that in the 1960's?
The clothing is only part of it, that with the camera angles is unbelievable!
Is that why the show didn't last very long?

See Laugh In with the girls dancing in bikinis and painted up. Skin was hardly unique to Trek.

The conservativeness of older television is often overestimated. I'm often surprised how contemporary some of the jokes on Johnny Carson are. In some ways we've gotten more conservative on TV since the 60s.

Is this the only show made in the sixties that you've seen? As Maurice pointed out it was hardly unusual. This was the era of miniskirts, bikinis and the sexual revolution.
I doubt skin was a factor in the shows cancelation. In fact it may have help it stay around longer than it should have with its high cost and low rating. ;)

Yes, because everyone dressed like the Puritans in the 1960s.

Honestly, the '60s were a mix of revealing clothing and uptight conventions that made no sense. For instance, married couples couldn't be shown to sleep together. They slept in twin beds, which makes one wonder where they conceived their kids, since neither had a bed big enough for two people. This was usual on soap operas, family dramas, and even The Flintstones.

TOS did push the envelope on sex and skin for its day. In fact, the producers had a trick -- they'd send a cut to the censors that was racier than they actually wanted, so that the censors would tell them to trim it down and they'd dial it back to the level of raciness they'd intended on all along, but the censors would think they won the argument, so the show would get away with it.

As for how long the show lasted, 3 seasons was above average for most shows, let alone science fiction shows of the era. Only a handful of '60s or '70s SF shows lasted longer than 3 seasons (e.g. The Twilight Zone, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and The Six Million Dollar Man), and most lasted only 1 or 2 seasons, sometimes even half a season or less.

There were a lot of movies made in the 60’s where no one wore any clothes.

I guess I'm thinking Andy Griffith and Gilligan's Island, Father Knows Best.
    Those weren't very racy.

I've actually never watched Star Trek until just the past few weeks as an adult. I remember the women having the super stupid "uniforms" I remember finding it ridiculous as a nine year old. I never even watched enough Then to notice all of the other racy outfits.:wtf:
And if they couldn't show married couples in the same bed, they sure show Kirk in some way more......

Ginger and Mary Anne in swimwear. Mary Anne's "costume" often included a bare midriff.
Father Know's Best went off the air in 1960.

Or the 'Kirk Smirk' drinking game thread. Slam down a shot every time Kirk smirks.

    Mary Anne was wholesome though:alienblush:
And they didn't do a lot of butt camera angles on Mary Anne.
Star Trek is rife with create camera angles on the women

I think Bill Theiss’ motto was ‘Use less fabric, show more skin, save more money.’ ;)

    Monday at 8 p.m.

And the "show the censors something more extreme so they'll let you get away with what you wanted in the first place" is an old Hollywood trick. Even Tex Avery did it in his cartoons at MGM in the 40s fer crissakes. :)
