It could end up meaning a lot but it could be a throwaway to show it wasn't really happening. John De Lancie could have signed on but I would expect them to keep it secret for as long as possible, same goes for Will Wheaton plus any other guest stars they have planned. If this series does end up being the swan song for the Picard character it wouldn't surprise me if we see both of them sooner or later.
Its probably exactly that, a re-purposed Borg Cube that was salvaged, it also depends on what part Seven plays in all this, we have no information on the state of the Collective after the events of Voyagers finale either. Did the Borg Queens defeat actually prompt it to change tactics or maybe even turn its back on the whole idea of growth/victory by assimilation.
Loved this pilot episode. Had just the right amount of nostalgia, suspense, mystery and human drama - not as showy in its special effects, didn't come across as rushed etc. So, didn't quite get the connection between the evacuation of Romulus and the android attack on Mars. First of all, the implication that the Federation should have let the Romulans go extinct because they're the enemy... well, Praxis all over again... last I checked, there was Shinzon who killed the members of the Romulan senate and planned to attack Earth... but, arguably, he was quite a disturbed individual, the abandoned product of Romulans genetic experiments to infiltrate the Federation. Romulans were allies not that long ago (driven into the Dominion War by Sisko and Garak's plot)... How did 2 of the Romulans end up at Chateau Picard, what about that Borg/Romulan cube? Then there are the androids... so, their rights as sentient beings got revoked (which Picard fought so hard for) because some of them went rogue... (fortunately, humans don't lose their sentience as a species after some of them comitted atrocities that cost millions of life... and still comit those atrocities... just saying). Picard's outrage was palpable and relatable. So, back to the connection... so the way I understood it, Picard persuaded Starfleet to send all their ships for the evacuation - and in the meantime, the androids attacked Mars that was left without defense... did I get that right? Love Number One. Overall, an auspicious beginning - I'm hooked. (And I just hope the rest of the season delivers.)
Produced or refitted. Some of those ships we saw in "Children of Mars" were - as complained about by others - dating back to DSC stories.
I like how history is beginning to repeat itself. In the 90s it was all about DS9 vs Voyager (even though the majority liked both). Now it might become Discovery vs Picard (and of course the majority will like both). Hopefully the arrival of 5-7 more shows will confuse everyone and end it
I wonder if older frames might be used for civilian use, like freight haulers, trainers or research. Due to the crisis they recalled those to be pressed in to emergency service.
Certainly, Section 31, set to start filming in May and likely premiering early next year will certainly provoke some interesting reactions.
I’m confused about the timeline! Send help stat! So basically, I think the Romulan supernova happened in 2387, right? And at the beginning of this new series, it’s been ten years since Utopia Planitia was destroyed? And I’m given to understanding that these two events both occurred in 2387. And yet I keep seeing the year 2399 tossed around for the setting of Star Trek: Picard. Either my math is wrong, their math is wrong, or — most likely, I’d wager — I’m woefully misunderstanding something.
Highest ever in the history of the CTV Sci-Fi Channel. Technically, that could mean since Space was rebranded as CTV Sci-Fi Channel in September 2019, so about 4 months. (That's how these kind of statements tend to go - technically correct, but misleading).
1.1 million, however, is impressive for Canada, as it only as 1/9 the population of the states. So you're looking at the equivalent of 9.9 million in the US. To put that in perspective, Discovery's premiere shown on CBS racked up a near identical (per capita wise) 9.6 milion US viewers.
I have seen a few references that make it sound like something has happened that has left a lot more former Borg out there now. So my thinking is that there are a lot of abandoned Cubes around, and the group of Romulans Soji is with managed to get a hold of one, and are now using it to experiment with the Borg tech on the ship.
It's not clear if Picard is in 2397 or 2399. Even Memory Alpha fans do not seem to have decided on a date. Patrick said the show was 20 years after Nemesis (2399). But Kurtzman and other producers said Jean Luc is 92, which would put the show in 2397 (and also the 10th anniversary of the 2387 supernova, although the show just said anniversary), and references to 20 years/30 years ago would be rounding. Going by the licensed, but unofficial, Picard Countdown prequel comic, the attack on Mars happens in 2385, a few years before the supernova.
Watched it a second time today and loved it even more. On first viewing I found it a little jarring that Picard and Data were so much older, which I know is ridiculous, but the part of my brain that processes fiction seems to have expected them to be frozen in time somehow (oddly, I didn't have that issue with the returning legacy characters of the newest Star Wars films). That didn't keep me from enjoying the episode, however, and on my second viewing that mental block disappeared and I truly felt like I was seeing Picard and Data again. Honestly, I loved everything about the premiere. I'm even in the minority in that I really like the theme music. I think it's a lovely, delicate little melody that fits well with the compassionate and contemplative main character. The only thing I can think of that I didn't care for (and it's an incredibly minor thing) is the imagery of the opening credits. They're well done, but pretty bland and generic. Up until Jean-Luc's face appears you could be watching anything. But everything else was great. I find the setup really engaging and I can't wait to see where the story goes. I find it curious that there's been no mention of Lore. I hope he at least gets name-checked at some point (they never mentioned him in Nemesis, either, which was also weird). Something that caught my ear on this watch was when Dahj talked about the flower her "father" named her after, and she specifically mentions that it was yellow and pink. Maybe it's just clunky dialogue, but it struck me as an odd detail to bring up. I wonder if that will come up again somehow.
I watched the episode again today and I wish I could change my vote. I said good at Midnight Thursday Morning, but I would put it up to excellent. This was a very good premiere and I can't wait to see where it all goes in the weeks ahead. I really loved the interview and that was a classic Picard speech. I was also looking for the Kassidy reference in the Boston scene and I couldn't find it. I did see a Bajoran logo though. I also think the theme is starting to grow on me. The music here sounded pretty cinematic, which is a good thing. Really excited for next week's episode.
