This is more akin to Twin Peaks: The Return or series 10 and 11 of The X files. I do not think anyone would suggest any of the characters there start in episode one of their respective new series.
Twin Peaks Season 3 and X Files Season 10&11 were conceptiualized as strict continuations of the show that preceded it. Star Trek Picard however is a different beast. It is decidedly NOT a continuation of TNG but it is a story - a NEW story; a NEW narrative - about Admiral Jean-Luc Picard and narratively this story - as most stories do - has a beginning and an end. the beginning, the first chapter, is episode one of Star Trek Picard

You sound like Sarek in The Search for Spock.

The real Data is space dust. Let's keep him that way.

When? How? Why? We know that even Data was incapable of creating a fully functioning positronic brain, hence Lal's death. And that just downloading his "memories" and/or personality into a standard computer wouldn't be the same ("Measure of a Man.")

So, no on this one, too.
OK I get that you dont want it to happen and there is a good chance it wont but its by no means impossible.

Does success have something to do with making two identical twins at a time, is that the secret to creating stable androids, once you have successfully resolved the positronic brain issue adding flesh and blood is not much of a stretch.

There is no doubt that the Federation has the technology to build them they just need to understand the trick to it like Soong did, it looks to me like someone has worked it out but the pool of individuals that could do it is limited.

We know B4 failed but we dont know what else was done with Data's essence either before his death or after, was he saved or did someone else besides Maddox intervene.

It really wouldnt surprise me.

Its all very Cylon at the moment.

I also thought the episode did a good job world building 24th century Earth as well. I read somewhere that they want to create a MCU-like universe with the new ST series/movies, and part of that is making the future feel like the future, instead of just a few corridors on a ship. Seeing 24th century Boston and Starfleet Archives is a good start.
Seeing the FNN newscast and the classic Haussmannian rowhouses in Paris as well as the characters wearing clothes not far removed from the 21st century norm also helped a lot for me; it all just seemed more real and lifelike this way, selling it as an obviously futuristic environment without being intrusive. Earth finally seems like a place where billions of people lead fulfilling, normal civilian lives.

I agree. Some people made fun of that desire to be like the MCU, but to me there's nothing wrong with creating a highly immersive universe that you can place multiple shows/movies in. As good as TNG/DS9 were, they never felt fully contiguous to me. It can be a good thing to have crossover and interactions between characters/movies.

I haven't seen it yet, but based on the people who are expressing displeasure, I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it.
Yeah its not bad at all, still early days but they certainly got the feel right.

Although as many have said the camera work is excellent but the plot twists are a bit obvious for anyone that has seen similar shows like Battlestar Galactica.

I am especially suspicious of the two Romulan helpers on Picards farm, I dont think they mean him harm but they definitely have ulterior motives, I think they may have set Picard up with that reporter to force him into facing the past and moving forward, not to mention that they may have something to do with the dreams.

There is definitely a conspiracy going on but I got hints that there could be more than one, the attackers were very careful not to kill Dahj at the start yet at the end of the episode they supposedly kill her right in front of Picard (or did they), they were also very careful not to hit Picard when they had him dead to rights more than once.

A lot of the fight scenes with Dahj felt staged to me like a carefully choreographed play for Picards benefit.

We shall see.

Yeah. Are they watching over him to make sure he doesn't step out of line?

Or are we as viewers just naturally suspicious of Romulan characters, and therefore victims of exactly the same kind of prejudice that made Picard turn his back on Starfleet?

They could be protecting him, or keeping him nicely under control triggering his memories and dreams as and when needed, I think its more likely protection as they know that Picard tried to save them, they definitely know more than they are letting on though.

Plus Dahj conversation with her mother rang all kinds of alarm bells as well and as someone else said it was very Terminator 2, the person who Dahj spoke to knew exactly what was going on, could have been the real person who has been in on it all along or a hologram.

I always felt the Romulans were underused which is another reason why I liked the DS9 Dominion War as we got to see that they are not all power hungry spooks with torture chairs, they have just as much variation as Humans/Klingons, same goes for the Cardassians.

Plus at this point anyone could be like Dahj, with the exception of named cast members from TNG/DS9/VOY, Alison Pills character is definately a candidate, I very much doubt Dahj and Sonj are the only ones running around.

Although with the exception of Cretak, that's pretty much all the DS9 Romulans were too! It's a shame that Star Trek's oldest recurring aliens (with the exception of Vulcans) have never really had a close examination. I'm hoping Picard finally does this, and the early signs are good.

Retired.

And by the end of episode one, we are following up on about half a dozen TNG episodes, the announced cast follows up on another dozen TNG and VOY episodes. We are also explicitly following up on NEM. It is the same narrative. They have gone out of the way to make it that same narrative, with the same cast, actual props/replicas thereof. The opening shot is a dream sequence featuring the enterprise D, Data in his FC uniform, and they are playing poker...something we only explicitly see Picard do in the very last scene of TNG.

The same characters are appearing in a story that grows from the historical events of other stories. Now, I am sure some people get the willies about sequels, but this is absolute a continuation of arcs going back some thirty odd years, and not simply just because the characters are the same.

The Borg added flesh to data. Soji is in a Borg cube.

The Romulan Admiral wasnt too bad even though she wanted to install torpedo launchers everywhere (understandable in a galactic war), we just never got the chance to see much else except for a few Romulan politicians who acted just like our own and were owned by Garak.

Yeah the Borg could do it, it looks like its Borg technology without the actual Borg Collective and we know they are totally able to do it, we shall have to see where they fit into the show along with Seven.

If you think about it creating lifelike humanoids would be an excellent way of slowly assimilating planets that would put up too much of a fight otherwise, that isnt whats happening in Picard of course as its been done to death in numerous other shows, it would be a natural evolution for the Borg though especially after seeing what Data was capable of.

I'm not sure why some of the critic reviews are labeling this episode as C+. I'm intrigued by the storyline and new characters, and there are enough threads from TNG to pull at the heartstrings. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Buncha thoughts having seen last night’s first Picard episode. I skimmed many posts here but couldn’t read all 85 pages lol

I am a fan of TOS and Star trek 2-4 movies above all else but enjoyed all other shows and movies for what they were. Tng set the stage for new things, and I love its characters. Having Picard back now is awesome but I am confused.

Romulans kinda became buddies of earth at the end of Ds9 so are they friend or not?

I also never liked the word “canon”
To me all star trek is good stuff and fits in somewhere. Dunno why that word is always and seemingly only ever associated with star trek. Oh well.

I never saw new Battlestar Galactica but the fact that machines attacked humans is similar in plot.

Seems to me the short trek attack on mars show makes sense now to me at least.

do discovery and picard work together in the course of star trek timeline and history?

it is cool that so much of the future has 21st century style. Music and clothes and buildings mixed w futuristic things. Seems earth culture loves a past time which had those things and they cling to them and emulate them in the 23/24th century kind of like how many people in our 21st century world right now like olde wide pine floors made from 200 year old wood lol

Looking forward to seeing more

Well, the Romulans lost their planet. Not all of them were evacuated (because of Synthetics, apparently), that's got to make some of them really mad. Well, we know of one that was so mad that he was bent on destroying all federation planets! Plus the Romulans have a long history of being deceitful and paranoiac.

True they do
So in a way some of them reverted back to hating earth. This will unfold as more is explained about what happened and why Picard left star fleet and all.

On the whole familiarity and liking of the 21st century thing... while I said people of the future may like to cling to our time, having them constantly refer to old earth sayings, dress and music , etc can be a bit much sometimes... I cannot think of many situations where I want to dress like someone from the 1700s or play their music. I guess hearing Green Sleeves around Christmas time may be an example of old hits still being cool.

Where is the option for THAT WAS AMAZEBALLS? I guess I really should calm down before running in here, high off all of the squeeing I was doing. ;)

I now understand why the Romulans are so pissed at Starfleet now, abandoning them like that in their time of need. Picard did a very noble thing stepping back from it all. Patrick Stewart really still has it, but his scene with the journalist where he was full of regret and anger were haunting.

I like that Dahj was a cybernetic being, tying Data into the story a lot more than I thought he would be. Looking back at Data on TNG and the films, it seems we have a few threads that we will be revisiting, whilst being it's own show as well.

It's clear to me that Number One should be the next character to have a spinoff. He's just too cute.

I really resent using my phone to post messages here as autocorrect is evil. I've suddenly lost my internet connection and had to watch Picard using my Amazon account, plut played it on my TV via my phone. What a weird experience that was for the first episode. I wasnt going to wait until I got back from holiday next week, that's for darn sure.
