.. or perhaps a live-in housekeeper who cares deeply about her employer who literally saved her life.

Now where’s the fun in that? I don’t get to reference the Picard manoeuvre.

Yes. It’s plausible.
But the talking in sleep thing definitely puts a more intimate vibe in there.

The notable thing is they don't treat him as their equal. Like fans, they appear to feel entirely indebted to him. And that's probably warranted, but it is what it is when viewed from this side of the screen.
it looks like he's the provider of that little group. he mostly provides synthehol-free Chateau Picard and legthy self-righteous speeches, but he provides nevertheless

B-4 could have been seen as a threat. He was captured and used as a trap by Shinzon of Remus and was an integral part of the plot to attack Earth and disable the Federation with the thalaron weapon. For all Starfleet and the Federation suspected B-4 was a Trojan horse for other dangerous data stored within his positronic net so he was ordered to be deactivated and disassembled.
I didn't get that at all from what was said.
Dr. Jurati said B4 couldn't handle Data's download and malfunctioned.
She seemed to indicate to me that B4 essentially 'died', not that he was shut down.

I listened to some Trek Fm podcasts where they interviewed Sir Pat, and we’ve all seen the convention videos, so I would say your point is easy to see, and may even have been the intent. Or at least the inspiration, particularly for Stewart. But I do t see them as fan expies, simply because they do tie in to that wider story to do with Hobus. I would not be surprised if we see them put Picard in contact with some people, and tbh, it would be cheesy as heck, but I would not even be that surprised if ninja romulan turns out to be Picards son.

Which brings to mind one reason why I don’t rate it higher than the other pilots...there are still lots of characters waiting to be introduced. As the first half of a pilot though...it’s amazing.

There's something else I wanted to say but I don't remember it now. It'll come back to me.

Here's what I forgot. The painting of Dahj. They said it's from 2369. That's the sixth season of TNG. So I was trying to think about when Data made paintings. The most obvious episode is "Birthright, Part I". Did Data paint the painting of Dahj in that episode? If he did, I'm very impressed.

I want to know what kind of trekkie Michael Chabon is. If he has this type of an eagle eye, then "In Chabon I Trust". This is also the guy who wrote "Calypso" and anyone familiar with my posts from the DSC Forum knows how highly I regard "Calypso".

Interesting in relation to Dahj referencing her own schizophrenia, and of course The Schizoid Man way back when. Of course, what she said may not be true. Dates download may have been on Maddox USB stick when he ran off to buy some toy dinosaurs.

I'm not so sure. This will be about doing the "right" thing along with some action-adventure and moralizing. The format may be a bit different, but it still felt like TNG in spirit to me.

I expected and have been rewarded with seeing here and elsewhere that Picard is going to be praised for the same things that the very same people have slammed Discovery for. It is interesting to watch, if predictable.

It's probably like trying to force install a modern operating system on a computer from the early 90s, it just isn't able to. Poor B4 probably got fried pretty quickly after the end of Nemesis.

The two of them have been living with Jean-Luc for years now and he is obviously letting the 'non-star fleet' life get to him.
They can see he is deteriorating and are concerned for his well-being.
Checking on him during the night, would not be anything strange for them to do in that case.

Having taken care of several elderly family members through the years, it was nothing for me to wake up during the night several times a week, to see if they were still breathing.
Also, having worked in a hospital on the second & third shifts for over forty years, it became routine to check for life-signs of the folks in my care while they slept.

Calypso upsets me because I wrote a fifteen minute radio script with such a similar premise I could scream xD

That aside..yes...that painting and when it was made is intriguing. Was Data planning his own legacy attest point? Did he collude with Maddox? (At the very least, that is obviously the case.) Is it a little bit later? When he meets his mother? Who literally can and does pass for human, something we are told here is impossible.

Just finished...

in short it was very well done. Stewart is excellent.

I am curious though. What ever happened to Lore. I mean in Descent pt2 Data said he’d been deactivated. But you’d think Starfleet would still use him for research.

In what way(s)? Doesn't seem like that to me....

As I've pointed out before both Picard and Burnham present very similar drives in these two series. They both are, at the start of their journeys, flawed characters who have heightened savior complexes, both failed and gave up and were both called back by someone asking for help, which is something they inherently need to do. I expect Picard to hit a number of the plot points that Burnham did along the way, and to recieve praise character and storywise from the people who lambasted Discovery for going to the same places.

For instance, where Burnham was criticized as a character for being right many times, Picard will be praised for the same virtue.

I have yet to see any evidence of that. Not least as so far, no one has committed any war crimes, no one has been eaten, there are named characters with lines, and the familiar alien races are all familiar. The closest thing is a sudden shock relative for an existing character, but that shock is part of the story, and actually makes sense. Oh...and no one is claiming any dubious firsts that have already been done before. No random redesigns, either, but I never much minded that personally.

The fight between Picard and DSC is somewhat onesided, in a variety of ways, and one I doubt anyone really wants.

Dogs are wonderful and all, but Picard should have some genuine companionship in his life.

Yeah, it kind of is. At least where Star Trek is concerned.
Real-world clandestine services don't function under monolithic operational flexibility without any kind of oversight or official acknowledgment of their existence. Such an entity would cause way more problems than it solves. But it sounds cool, I guess.

The entire concept is reductive and simplistically quixotic.
