When did Data become capable of forgetting?
When Control was introduced in the novels, it fucked me off. The closer I got to it turning up in DSC, the less interested I was, till I basically still haven’t finished series 2 even now. Section 31 and control are anti-ethical to the existing narrative arcs present throughout Trek, and they just plain poison the well.
I love me some cyberpunk, and espionage thrillers. But much like I don’t have sweet and sour sauce in my coffee, I don’t want them in Trek and they just don’t work in Trek, or more specifically the Federation. It just hollows the whole thing out and removes some unique aspects of the setting.
yeah, but bashir's version wasn't as sophisticated as Data, hence why Bareil wouldn't have been "actually" Bareil if he had completely replaced his brain with the positronic implants.

What was the original point in including Section 31 anyway?
I'll be brief, because I want to watch a movie before bed, but I thought this was very well-done. The feel and pacing and tone were spot-on. The cinematography was gorgeous. Sir Patrick was spot on...the scene where he participates in the interview was powerful and gut wrenching because of his performance. The whole thing was perfectly subtle, thoughtful, and intriguing.
It did its job....I want more right now.
I have to go pinch myself. Star Trek, in 2020, has two first-run series airing, the newest of which features a legacy main character played by the original actor. We can't take this for granted. I never would have predicted this 10 years ago.

He's had them around a long time before he realizes that.
My initial thoughts after reading that sentence:
1)was Gene still on drugs at his old age?
2)was he an only child? Why would he think this?
3) Rick Berman may have ultimately burned out, but even at his worst, he seemed to get stories need actual conflict to be worth watching

I think ‘conflict’ in narrative is too easily misunderstood, and too easily leads to unpleasant actions or characters...which is fine if that’s what you want. Plenty of Star Trek writers got what ‘no conflict’ actually meant, look at Michael Piller. Some didn’t.
To give a shining example, there’s a reason why Pulaski pissed off a lot of people, and why she just doesn’t really work on the enterprise.
Section 31 is one of those things you think is cool and so utterly profound when you're 14 years old. And then you grow up and realize just how silly it is.
Many people are broken for a long time before consciously realizing it. He likely brought them in as help, as they had nowhere to go.
