I had an amusing thought, if the Doc escaped by nobody considering him truly sentient.

"You're not going to ban me, are you?"
"No, we're not. We only need to ban the sentient AIs."
"Excuse me? I am definitely sentient! Just ask Captain Janeway who I served as Chief Medical Officer for for seven years!"
"You are sentient? So we should ban you!"
"No, no! Uhh, I'm not sentient, just a toaster. Please state the nature of the medical emergency! I'm programmed to say that, yeah."
"So, you're not sentient then, that means your artistic works aren't protected under copyright laws."
"What? Of course they're protected, I'm just as sentient as any organic life!"
    "So we should ban you?"
    "No!"

B-4 could have been seen as a threat. He was captured and used as a trap by Shinzon of Remus and was an integral part of the plot to attack Earth and disable the Federation with the thalaron weapon. For all Starfleet and the Federation suspected B-4 was a Trojan horse for other dangerous data stored within his positronic net so he was ordered to be deactivated and disassembled.

Discovery is good. Picard is good. Picard episode 1 is better than Discovery episode 1 by a wide margin. But Discovery got better. Hopefully Picard gets even better too.

The more I think about it the more I am slightly annoyed that the writers forgot you can recover from a stab wound to the heart if they treat you fast enough.

Considering we see a holographic AI working in the archive, we shouldn't presume holo-life has been banned just because synths have.

It's actually shares a major theme with Disco, IE a flawed main character who suffers from heightened savior complex, is drawn back in to their old life by someone who asks for help.

My initial thoughts after reading that sentence:
1)was Gene still on drugs at his old age?
2)was he an only child? Why would he think this?
    3) Rick Berman may have ultimately burned out, but even at his worst, he seemed to get stories need actual conflict to be worth watching

    Holy balls :wtf:

except she clearly, on several ocassions throughout the movie, identifies herself as 'lesbian', no matter what she did in her youth and experimental phase.

look, I know the movie is funny and nerdy as hell, but as a member of the LGBTQ+ community I can't just skip the problematic parts in it, that even Kevin Smith agreed, he shouldn't have written in hindsight.

Soooooooo....artificial lifeforms in PICARD...just the MacGuffin for Season 1 or do we think this theme will follow us through the whole show?

I'm talking about things like pacing and using your fan service effectively. The idea of the messages in "Such Sweet Sorrow" wasn't a bad idea. The fact we had to sit through every character doing it was.

Do we know what the green-light ships are that surrounded the Borg cube?

The way that shot was framed made it seem like we should know what those ships were.

I give it an 8/10. Points off for wallowing a bit in sentimentality and nobody noticing a massive explosion in a major center or talking to the main witness about it.

I wasn't implying it was all SMG's fault - or even mostly. I do think it was a mistake making her not only the lead, but a "hyper-lead" in a way that no other Trek protagonist has been - basically both subject and object.

In contrast, it seems like while Picard is the protagonist, the showrunners are pretty clear that the plot is really about other people (Dahj, Data, presumably Soji) who interface with him.

I love the first episode. I'd give it 9/10. Some things really surprised me, but the story was compelling. It is great to see Stewart back in the Picard role. I think this series will be something special.

It ties it with the anti-transhumanism that always sits awkwardly at the heart of Trek quite nicely.

He's the center of everything, just like she is. They've simply done a better job with his story (so far).

I think its worth noting that both shows share some notable themes, but they are different stories. Just as importantly, on gazes backwards longingly with comparatively uncritical nostalgia and with a whole lot of sentiment, while the other looks back with the intention of being transformative and deconstructionist. With each, your mileage may vary in terms of what you want from modern Trek.

they had vaguely Romulan design and green is a color often associated with the Romulan Empire...so, Breen, I guess?

In Discovery. They completely missed the point of what they were in that.
