I was waiting for... "...history has a way of repeating itself ..." to come from Jean Luc's lips.

Might still be heard later on...

Since Enterprise I would say.

surprised the interviewer hasn’t seen Dunkirk. It’s a good movie.

She might not know Dunkirk but I bet she knows Kirk. So her knowledge of history I am guessing isn't all that bad.

I don't think Picard talks in cliché. Except with his catchphrases, Make it so and Engage.:)

Woke up around 5:30 to watch this. Couldn't stay up till 3 AM.

On the whole, it was lovely. Stewart's acting, as many have said, has only improved with time. Isa Briones was great as Dahj as well. There were times that she was on camera with Stewart I honestly got a bit misty eyed. The cinematography was fantastic, with none of the weird camera tricks that I find distracting on Discovery. I love that we're back to slower--paced "space drama"- because that's always been my favorite sort of Trek.

That said, I didn't think the episode was perfect. On a ten point scale, I'd maybe rate it an eight. Two scenes kinda dragged and brought me out of the show a bit. One was Picard's interrogation by the reporter. The other was his whole interaction with Jurati near the end of the episode. In both cases it was clear that the writers wanted an infodump to bring the viewers up to speed on things, but it came across as awkward because things were being explained that everyone should have known in universe. That said, it was a relatively minor issue.

I'm thinking that she is very aware of Dunkirk (both the occurrence & the movie), but due to the 'Synths" being involved most folks don't equate the Mars attack in such a manner.

It's the NYC Twin Towers destruction that would mostly come to mind.
(and the writers did that on purpose one would assume)

It was nice to see the Federation News Network/Service fleshed out more. We saw news reporters covering the launch ceremonies of the Enterprise-B in 2293 and Jake Sisko penned stories for the Federation News Service during the Dominion occupation of DS9 but other than that we've seen precious little of the service or the network and how it broadcasts news across the Federation.

I kept waiting for somebody to call her Lal.
Kinda disappointed she wasn't mentioned.

She might be in a future episode. Lal is more well-known within the fanbase than Bruce Maddox and he got at least two or three name drops in the premiere.

Just watched the first episode. Great show so far.

My prediction is this: Data will come back. Not through B4 though, because in this episode they showed B4's in pieces in a drawer at the Daystrom Institute, so B4 is out of commission for good. I think Data will come back somehow, reconstructed, looking and acting like a human like this android girl. So basically, he will look like Brent Spiner without any makeup. That's my guess as to what's going to happen. That will be the big twist in the season finale.

Stewart did look rather elderly in this. I don’t know if that was him or acting since he’s supposed to be 12 years older than his actual age.

How do I put this? This is Star Trek as a prestige drama.

Oh, so much this!

I really enjoyed this. It was Star Trek but not overly on the nose. I think this proves you don’t need copious amounts of Starship porn and technobabble for the format to work. Its far more mature than what we saw from the Berman era and I think that’s a good thing. I felt the parallels between Trump’s America were relevant but not over the top.

I enjoy Discovery for what it is— a fun but rather empty experience. But this? This is the Star Trek we need right now. Like Garth suggests — this is Prestige Trek. Can’t wait until next week!

He may have gone kinda crazy and his M5 computer may have killed hundreds but the man was a wunderkind who won the Nobel Prize for inventing duotronics at the age of 24. He deserves some level of admiration and respect.

I disagree. I think if you bring Data back it would undermine his death and also it's not really fitting with the mood of the show were things like death and the passage of time is treated with realism like we experience them in real life. I think at most we might get a kind of automated message or we will see one of his memories recovered, kind of like find a recording of someone you loved and has died only for it to bring the pain back or maybe even be something that makes Picard happy to hear his friends voice again or for the girl to sort of meet her dad even if only for a short moment.
