Should I watch the short episode before I start into Picard?

It doesn't seem to reveal anything important that you wouldn't expect to be shown in the series.

I don't believe there's anything there that won't be gone over in the series proper. On the other hand, it is eight minutes. So it isn't a big time investment.

    Heh ...
It is if you only have "...two minutes ..." to work with.

After reading the last few of pages of this thread, it seems more like a messy divorce.

The supernova was a muddled thing from the start, due to JJ Abrams' constant tinkering. And although some tie-ins (the first co-written by current Trek overlord Alex Kurtzman himself) interpreted it in one way doesn't mean that Picard will do the same. They could take the bare bones on what the movie shows us and build a whole new backstory around it, or make retcons and changes to what we did see and alter it further.

Although I'm wondering if the nebula we see in some of the teasers is the Hobus Nebula, which in Star Trek Online was left behind following the catastrophe.

If you get the prefix codes wrong three times, I bet it bricks your starship.

I just watched a second time. Still great. Still packs a punch at the end.

The Hobus supernova was so vague in Trek 2009 you could practically give the PIC writers carte blanche to retcon the supernova from scratch and I doubt it would conflict with anything we saw in the 2009 movie.

As long as the reference the Romulus supernova, and potentially Spock, I think that gets the general idea Abrams was going for. Though, I'm of the opinion that the more references to ST 09 the better, in terms of galactic developments.

I expect a scene at some point of Picard commiserating over the disappearance and apparent death of Spock and how he wasn't able to stop them from happening. They shared a bond from their mind meld on Romulus and I get the feeling that Picard might sense something happened when Spock disappeared into the Red Matter black hole.

Kurtzman has already claimed that Spock’s actions during that incident aren’t something covered by the show, at least not yet. Might be bluffing.

Not sure why it would come up, to be honest.

Chiefly because it's Spock, I guess. Some people in any given fictional universe are always important in absolute terms, that is, absolutely have to be at least name-dropped if they can't make a guest appearance in flesh.

Not that PIC would need a plot excuse to name-drop Spock, or McCoy, or Kirk. Most shows didn't. But Trek absolutely has to have at least Spock, Kirk, and Klingons, quite regardless of the setting. ENT most probably failed to get the fifth season solely because it forgot that.

They also assured us that the Enterprise wouldn't be seen in Picard... until it was (see the latest trailer).

Anyway, his actions don't have to be discussed, just a mention of his death.

It's a big mess, this star blowing up and multiple Romulan worlds frying. Plenty of stories of heroism and cowardice there, of sacrifice and profiteering, of dark forces at work and of great ideals that transcend hostilities.

All of that can be covered by mere mention of the incident: the stuff is implicitly there. But it's also the perfect excuse for portraying some of that, milking it for the dramatic value. Instead of learning about Spock, we might learn about the great evil this Bubba Xi Jones character did in the context, or about the epic story of IRW Cutlass, or the tragedy of Kuppa Java II and how it affected Elnor. I mean, we already know about Spock - why waste time retelling the story when a mere namedrop will suffice?

    I agree with you Timo.

I am sure History will say that Spock died halting the spread of the Supernova to the whole system. Saving several ancillary planets and preventing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Romulans.

Not a bad way to be remembered, like Kirk dying saving the Enterprise B.

Rather than "confuse" the story-telling by introducing Spock, let's focus on what Picard did, or tried to do - with Laris being a personification of all those Picard saved, despite what he was ordered to do by Starfleet.

I think they meant the current version of the ship. The "E" or "F".
