Spoilers New "blue skies" trailer!

The brief showing of the 1701-D as a flashback to what I suspect looks like a scene from the movie "Generations" that has a big shiny tin can look to it, instead of reliefed deck plating... from what I can see it does have very nice proportions and great use of color (e.g. deflector dish vs nacelles is fairly awesome) but the shiny tin can of the hull just looks off.).

The teaser itself... It's a bit mawkish, shallow and pretentious with one-liners, and a cringey song with chalkboard vocals. In other words, it's typical paint-by-numbers teaser fare nowadays for Hollywood films.

P.S. If you think that's rough, let me get you to a couple college instructors who'll make me look like Polite Smurf by comparison...

A. I think the Enterprise-D looks better here than it ever did before.

B. You have no idea how much of a kick I'm getting out of TNGers being the ones in the hot seat this time. They haven't changed the Enterprise-D at all. It's just lighting. And this is what some of you are going ape-shit over? Give me a break.

I like the Disco Enterprise but at least TOS Fans not liking that one is something I can understand. There, they actually changed the ship. But here? This is nothing.

Maybe just a coincidence, but does the synth remind anyone else of 0718 from Into Darkness?

It does! Hadn't thought of that. I suspect there's no connection, though.

IIRC, 0718 was supposed to be a synthetically enhanced cybernetic human. Basically a non-assimilated Borg. These new PIC Synths seem to be full-on Androids, probably of a Soong-lineage.

An ethical question would be the distinction between cybernetic "enhancement" (permitted) and genetic enhancement (forbidden). I wonder whether both are permitted only for medical reasons.

In Measure of a Man, Data asks Picard why everyone isn't outfitted with visors like Geordi's.

This is a connection between DSC (Airam) and ST09 that I hadn't noticed before.

A VERY good question! Why is cybernetic enhancement okay but genetic enhancement is not?

We see both 0718 in the Abramsverse and Ariam in the Prime Discoverse, both ostensibly approved by (and possibly even sponsored by) the Federation, yet Bashir's parents went to jail for essentially "fixing" him and saving him from a potentially shortened and/or diminished quality of life from known genetic defects. Would not either path of enhancement provide an "unfair disadvantage" over the non-enhanced majority and potentially produce an enhanced elite?

Personally, I'm thinking the Khan stigma that haunted the Federation's psyche has gotten a little overblown. The technology to build genetic supermen far exceeded the moral and ethical boundaries that our society could have reasonably accommodated back in the 1990's (or even now). One could think that, by the 23rd/24th century, humanity's ability to ethically manage genetic manipulation without allowing another Khan Singh to emerge and take over would be better developed. IMO, they shouldn't be as gunshy about it as they are. Then again, they might open the slippery slope of "enhancement registration", akin to the "mutant registration" that X-Men and other hero shows used to great effect, inadvertently making them second-class citizens.

And perhaps that's what this "rogue synth" storyline is about. Worse, maybe they're Borg-enhanced Soong droids. That could get sticky real quick and may explain their sudden uprising with the simultaneous reappearance of the Borg under Romulan/Tal Shiar control, based on the trailers' content. This will invoke fear in the non-enhanced populous, making people like 0718 and Ariam a marginalized and oppressed class, with the potential of being compromised or corrupted by the Borg/Romulans.

Yep, I was thinking about that too. They could have a full-on AI insurrection on their hands, but possibly not as organized as SkyNet, or as centralized as Disco's Control.

Looking at the ship I think it looked more metallic then I was expecting. But you should have heard me scream during the game when it aired, everyone thought the must have missed a big play.

I think there are gong to be a lot of disappointed people when they all realize that this image of the Enterprise-D in the trailer is about all we're going to get. It may not even be any longer than what was shown.

Should be fun.

Yup. Feel like it’s an establishing shot....and that’s about it.

God, I really hope not. The Voyager version of AI rights storyline was pretty poor.

I sincerely hope (and recognize this seems to be an "unpopular opinion") that Star Trek Picard doesn't turn into a dumping ground for rehashing every loose end, minor character, and random historical event from the TNG era.

Let's keep it simple. We don't need to have an appearance by Seska's long-lost uncle, Keiko, and Thomas Riker to keep the audiences engaged.
