I don't understand why Starfleet constantly has to change the uniforms.

I thought Starfleet was an organisation for space exploring and not a fashion house.

As I see it, the TNG uniforms were the best, followed by those in the first seasons of DS9 and Voyager.
The existence of replicators makes the logistics of changing uniform styles pretty trivial. I'm sure there are plenty of bored admirals who like to tinker with this sort of thing.

Every Chief of Starfleet Operations has their own idea of uniforms.

Why not? It's a post scarcity universe (supposedly, except when it isn't). Manufacturing uniforms isn't difficult.

I don't have a problem with them. It's been quite a while since the TNG era so they were bound to change in the interim. Just as they'll be different in DSC season 3 assuming Starfleet still exists.

Clothes evolve in subtle ways over time and people love variety. Some of the changes in Starfleet uniforms have been pretty drastic. To go from Buck Rogers style white spandex in TMP to 19th century Maroon Napoleonic tunics in TWOK was quite the change. A different universe altogether.

I don't get why they didn't evolve the FC-DS9 uniforms. Its like they chose to revert back to the Voyager-DS9 look because its recognizable....which is just lazy. I mean, I'm getting this notion that CBS never really wanted to 'evolve' Star Trek more than just make it more marketable to the general public. The entire way they are going about this is disregarding the fans and saying "We want new viewers" which is FINE, but then our fandom gets diluted into a general pop culture fandom.

Evolve it how? Because the AGT/Endgame uniforms were back to the primary color scheme, though a full color tunic rather than the shoulders. What's the next evolution of the uniform? Also, how do uniforms evolve? I mean, TOS went from primary colors to neutral shades with no clear connective tissue.

As for CBS not wanting to "evolve" Trek I find that highly debatable. Mileage and all that.

Yeah, fashion has certain trajectories it follows, but it really doesn't 'evolve' like an organism would. In one decade one thing is fashionable, on another it is something else. An there can be drastic shift, as designers intentionally try to do something new that sets their thing apart. People also get tired of things over time. After a decade of everything being in bright primary colours people have grown tired of that and neutral cool greys and beiges seem fresh.

After 50 years, it's ALREADY a general pop culture fandom.

That (star)ship has sailed. :shifty:

Yeah, we go from primary colours to pastel jumpsuits to Salvation Army band costumes and then back to primary colours. By the turn of the century, the retro 2370 look is very much in again.

Personally I think the corduroy look of the FC-DS9 uniforms with their quilted vertical stitches was a little odd although the darker look suited The Dominion War.

I think the FC Uniforms will be retroactively considered a wartime uniform. I like that they don't have them anymore, just to give the sense that this in fact a different time.
Same here. I see no reason why that one style would inform the next.

So...they have been a wartime uniform since BEFORE the Dominion war? That would be the oddest retroactive statement to date. We already know the uniforms were established in DS9 before the war began. Why change that up?

They were also fighting the Maquis, the Klingons, the Borg, and, yes, there was paranoia about the Dominion. Things were looking bad. The war didn't just happen, there was a three-year build-up to it. Times were already changing.

They're not going to say on screen it was a war-time uniform, but I think when they decided to change the uniform, in-universe, the rationale would be it was most associated with the war and everything going on at that time. They'd want something to break away from that.

Not sure why people are agreeing with your reasoning. That still makes no sense...so then at the time, was the Federation and Starfleet going through some kind of idea that changing to grey is somehow better for wartime? It makes no sense...why would Starfleet officers choose to change their uniforms in times of war? They aren't on the field, they are in starships or starbases...so again, it doesn't make sense to hide the division colors in wartime when the opposing factions ALREADY know about them. The only reason they would 'retcon' the grey uniform idea was for pure commercial reasons, nothing more. Like I said before, they are just trying to gain casual viewers and disregard the actual fans of the show.

I'm an "actual fan of the show" and I like the new uniforms. I always look forward to the creativity in design and aesthetics that go with new Star Trek spinoffs.
