Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

I'm kinda over his style of starship design. I would like to see another illustrator take a crack at designing new ships.
agreed. i like eaves' work from the 90s and he basically rose to the challenge of designing distinct, new ships to fill out the federation fleet in discovery. but they're distinct, new john eaves ships and i think it'd be nice if we got something brand new.

Wait, but Eaves designed the Enterprise-E and similar classes, didn't he? Isn't that what people want for starships in Picard?
E is not exactly amazing. Eaves is fine, but his designs are rather samey. Sharp and angular. No matter what era, no matter what species, they look distinctly eavesian. Personally I'd like to post TNG ships to follow the style of galaxy class, more flowing organic shapes. I think that would communicate the high tech better.

Exactly. I would like to see a lot more variety in ship designs.

it's at least an opportunity to show a new generation of ships being on the cusp of the 25th century and all. just like probert created a new design language for TNG and the 24th century, a new designer (or eaves if he's able to) could create something fresh for this period in trek.

i'm concerned everything is going to look like discovery and since the only ships we've seen thus far are literally from discovery, welp...

Assuming that there is gonna be more Discovery era Trek it would be even more important to create a distinct style for the late 24th century of Picard. Each era should have its own iconic and recognisable look.

when in truth most of his work is very derivative.

Can you give examples? Sometimes it makes sense to refine an existing design, and I think he was very good at it - the D4 and D5 as predecessors to the classic Klingon battlecruiser, the Enterprise B that had to reuse the old Excelsior miniature, Valdore as an enhanced version of the D'deridex... But there's also ships of his that look like nothing I've seen before, such as the T'Plana Hath, the Enterprise E, or some of the Son'a ships.

I'm concerned everything is going to look like Discovery

Almost all my favorite starships are Eaves' sleek and modern designs from the TNG movies, yet almost all the ships he designed for Discovery are among my least favorite. Somehow they don't look very Eaves-y at all to me. It appears to depend a lot on what style he's asked to draw, and the more angular and less graceful ships that seem to have been required for DIS are not his strength. I hope that PIC finally returns to the visual style of the TNG movie ships - they still look more up to date to me than everything we've seen in the past 15 years - or at least uses those old Eaves designs as a starting point.

I already predict that the first episode of PIC will urinate on my childhood and travel back in time to kick me in the nuts. There might also be the theft of my favorite childhood granola bar or candy.

I imagine while I'm watching the show, Patrick Stewart himself will break into my house and steal my TOS/TNG Blu-ray's.

but i digress...

The Enterprise-E is the only standard 24th Century Starfleet ship he designed for the shows/movies.
All the other new designs out of the TNG movies were by other designers.
I say 'standard' because he also design the holoship in insurrection and a couple shuttles.

He did design a handful of 24th Century ships for the original version of Star Trek Online however.

Indeed. They really do look like they could be early 25th Century ships, don't they?
They really don't.
