Yesterday I watched The Three Doctors from the Pertwee blu-ray set and it looked and sounded great.

Is there a place online where we can watch for news about existing and upcoming bluray sets for classic Who?

Season 14, supposedly in March but will probably slip like they always seem to.

Cool. That means the US version, "Tom Baker season 3", will soon follow - likely after McCoy season 1... ugh, all these decades shown in the US and for decades Americans knew the difference and could handle "season 14", "season 23", and so on... not anymore?! :wtf:

Oops. :o Thanks for the correction. I forgot it was season 26. What the heck was making me think McCoy season 1/season 24?!

Someone on twitter, of learning of the release of season 14 on BD, said Talons is his favorite and Tom Baker in Sherlock gettup is his favorite, too. Then the ever-righteous El Sandifer came on and proclaimed that if anyone in 2020 said Talons is their favorite, is a racist.

Its 14th of January, 2020, in Greece. I love Talons, and I proclaim it my favorite. Am I racist?

No I don't think so but then its my favourite story as well!

I see two types of absolutist view on this on this. The Sandifer approach to brand people racist and there are those, particularly on GB, who refuse to accept Talons is problematic on race at all.

I don't find either approach helpful, for me it's possible to recognise its faults and that it wouldn't be made like that today but still love the story.

Its one of those unfortunate realities of life. Do I wish they had cast an actual Asian actor for the role of Li H'sen Chang? Sure. Do I wish the Doctor hadn't kept saying the Asian with midly racist remarks? Also true. But the story is richer than that, and to deny its qualities is as bad as to deny its problems. I also don't think its the equivelant of, say, Birth of a Nation, since it doesn't actively promote racism or any hate group. Its casual racism is unfortunate, but it was part of that time and something that should not be ignored.

It'd be like saying if anyone likes Space Seed or The Wrath of Khan is a racist because Ricardo Montalban plays an Indian and he's not an Indian.

If you listen to the DVD commentary, one problem they had with Talons was at the time it was produced there just weren't that many Asian actors working in the U.K at the time and they couldn't even get enough for extras in the tong scenes.

So finding a suitable actor for a lead role who was available when they were shooting (both blocks) was probably a pretty hard ask.

One could make the argument (not me) that they could have just written Chang as a non-Asian. But I honestly don't give a fuck. She's wrong.

Who did the voice for the "assistant"? At least to my untrained ear, he sounded a lot like one of the performers from the original production.

Yeah it did sound like the original actor who played D84, Gregory De Polnay.

As dorky as this may seem, I was rather sad that D84 "died" when I first saw the serial sometime in 1983 on WFSU. Maybe it was De Polnay's cultured, almost pleading, sorrowful voice that made one (or, at least me) empathize with him. I think he would have made a cool traveling companion. True, we got K-9, but the dynamic would have been different.
