No longer deep space, renaming DS9

I still wonder how they managed to throw them off the planet, being all Luddites and that ...
Maybe they're just pretending to be totally Luddites because they sensed that they could get Picard to fight their battles for them. Otherwise they would have taken matters into their own hands.

They were able to determine the fault with Data's positronic brain. Not so low-tech after all.

For just a second I imagined the Baku being manipulative enough that they would have known the Son'a were their relatives and chosen to conceal that information because they really did want Our Heroes fighting their battle for them.

Bajor Station

Although, shouldn’t there be a lot more stations in orbit of an entire planet? Was all the ore (and/or other goods) on the entire planet brought through Terok Nor?

Gateway Station
Celestial One
Celestial Alpha
Temple Alpha
Temple Station
Alpha Station
Starbase Alpha

They were the same people who used to travel the stars, not descendants who might have forgotten how to work technology. And they clearly didn't swear off all technology in any circumstance and destroy everything they had with them when they arrived, since if they had exiling the Son'a would've been outright impossible.

It's so bizarre to me that there's so many obvious questions about the situation that nobody seems to bother to ask.

Out-of-Universe: obvious script issues.
In-Universe: Mind-boggling.

For the wormhole, too, I thought it would've made sense to have a 2nd station nearby in case a Dominion fleet found its way through. Putting all the pressure on an old Cardassian station seemed odd, even if it performed very admirably.

I thought maybe one at each mouth of the wormhole — Starbase Alpha, Starbase Gamma. Though I’m not sure that makes sense.

Multiple stations at the mouth of the wormhole might be interesting in some glimpse of the future. Maybe a constellation of them — one Starfleet, one civilian, one drydock, maybe one religious Bajoran one, and a handful of weapons platforms and other artifacts of the defense perimeter.

I never understood why the Dominion didn't build their own station on their end of the wormhole. They called it part of "our territory," though I was never clear whether the wormhole was within the official borders of the Dominion. And if it wasn't, whose territory was it in? Or why not chose to expand the borders when the wormhole became relevant to their geopolitical interests? I always wondered if there was a 2nd Gamma superpower we never heard about, for that reason.

I don't think we ever got anything explicit, but the extreme length of time it took for the Federation to even start hearing the name 'Dominion' made it pretty clear imo that the wormhole was not really that close to actually active Dominion space. What the Dominion claims it has the right to access is another question, obviously. I also don't know if we ever saw the Dominion build any space station. Maybe they typically didn't use them.

I don't think there's another large power by the wormhole.

For one thing, we never heard of one other than the Dominion. Secondly, if there was and the wormhole was by their territory, I doubt they would be stupid enough to end up fighting a war in TWO quadrants.

I really think the Dominion kept themselves quiet to be that surprise, and had Odo not found his people as quickly as he did, it might have taken years, if ever, to discover the Changeling threat and what they were fully capable of. The Dominion plays the LOOOONNNNG game... decades is just a pittance to them.

But it is an interesting observation.

I definitely don't think there was another large power at the wormhole. It was just open space with various small systems nearby.

If the Bajorans become a federation member it could probably become Starbase 45 or something. Maybe with a bajoran name as well.

It’s presumably called deep space nine because it’s far from the federation at least in a political sense if not absolute distance.

Honestly, I see no reason to rename the station. I mean, it's a well-known name among everyone who has anything to do with Starfleet, Bajor and space stations in common. It would only be confusing to give it another name.
