RT critic rating now down to 19%. In curious contrast, the audience score is a much higher 68% at the moment. Considering most critics also savaged Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and I ended up loving that film, and here they seem to be indulging in a frothing hyperbole contest more than actually reviewing the movie, I'm still more than willing to give Cats a shot, though likely when it hits home markets rather than in a theatre. Box office ought to be interesting, to say the least.

I saw it opening day and really enjoyed it. Yes, it's a series of loosely-related songs strung together on a bare-bones plot, but that's just how Cats has always been. Great performances throughout (Ian McKellan and James Corden were perfectly cast) and an overall entertaining experience.

I saw the musical in a London theatre back in the early 80s. Even with Elaine Page and Brian Blessed, I found it hard going, a bit on the heaviside even.

This is a new low for the movie industry! They literally released a movie unfinished, and then released a "patched" version later! Unbelievable. This is the kind of crap that really should stay in the video game sector.

Well they literally had issues like feet clipping through the ground and stuff. It was an embarrassment to the whole effects house, so they probably really wanted to get that cut away from people.

I heard some reviews say that during the dance scenes, the faces do't quite fit right, as in they are not quite in sync with the rest of the body.

When I saw the trailer over the summer, I'm thinking.. "it looks strange AF, but it also LOOKS like what I remember from seeing commercials for the musical when I was a kid. I mean humanoid cats played by real people, yet done through SFX.. is a strange idea.. that could only appeal to those who liked the play and that aesthetic

Yeah, I've never heard of this either. If they were able to improve the effects this quickly, I don't see why they didn't just delay it for a week or two and fix it before it was released. Did they think the effects were good enough, and people wouldn't care?

They thought they'd make a lot of money as counterprogramming to star wars, and refused to miss out.

Supposedly they were still working on the film the day of the premiere and had to just stop working and deliver it. They couldnt delay the theatrical release at that point so they delivered the unfinished film to theater chains so it could make its release date. And at the studio they just kept working on the film until they finished it which is the version that's now being delivered to theater chains.

I like musicals, and I like off-the-wall stuff. But seeing the two and a half minute trailer was more than enough for me with this one. If it had been done as cartoony cats, then I could have given it a shot. But I think I would get nightmares if I tried to watch this. Costumed humans make sense for the stage version, because the performers on stage are human. But with CGI, they had the opportunity to make the characters look more like cats instead of what seems like the hellish aftermath of some apocalyptic tragedy that mutated humanity into bizarre fuzzy creatures.

(FWIW, the stage version never appealed to me, either.)

Saw it with my grown kids who had it on cassette and VHS and used to invent new cats in a notebook. I played the grooves off the LP senior year in HS. The movie experience was great fun. Most of the cringe is in the first third. Some numbers were quite good, in fact. We got the version with human hands, woo! We laughed and sang along. Take little kids, they should love it.
