Cats Movie Starring Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellan, Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift

Both those things, Rebel Wilson and James Cordon are near the beginning -- which gets it over with, but really sets a bad tone: overweight people are clumsy, gross baffoons. Pretty pissed about that. [...]
I assume what you mean is that the film portrays overweight people as clumsy, gross baffoons.

That's how I read their comment, and if so, it's a definite black mark against the film. I'll admit, there do seem to be some fairly serious misjudgements beyond the divisive character designs.

“Cats” (2019)
I deliver this news with all the relish of an oncologist delivering positive test results: “Cats” is the horniest movie of 2019. Scientists are still desperately trying to understand why, but for some reason, Tom Hooper and Universal thought it would be a good idea to strip their stars down to their bare essentials and cover them in CGI cat-fur, generating horrific cat-human hybrids that retain their butts and breasts. If you thought this movie would try to downplay those jarring human assets, THINK AGAIN! There is so much cat-human ass action in this movie that one might forget the plot entirely if it had any plot to begin with. Add that to a series of horny musical numbers, including one that kicks off with a slew of female cats drinking fountains of milk straight from the tap, and the result is a nightmarish fetish manifesto that will leave you unable to look Idris Elba in the eye ever again. –Lena Wilson

Who thinks Swift's cat lady character looks like Selina Kyle as a mutated catgirl in the Tyger Tyger episode of Batman TAS? one of my favorite episodes and Selina is lovely no mater how she looks. Yet Swift's Cat lady is nowhere near as *wolf whistle* as catgirl Selina, even Cleo from Heathcliff, Felicia, Callie Briggs from Swat Kats, Jenny from Bucky O'Hare, Aishia Clan Clan, Mirage from Aladdin, Pam and Polly from Eek the Cat, Kittain Kaboodle from Talespin, Kit Mambo from Animalympics, Hatton Slayden's cat women (if anyone is familiar wit that excellent artist?), Omaha the cat dancer, that stripper 3 breasted alien cat lady from Star Trek V, M'ress from Star Trek and even Cheetara/Pumarya are way more attractive than Swift's cat lady.

No one gives a shit how attractive you think anthropomorphic cat women are.

One more thing in its favor.

There is a vhs version now with parts on youtube if anyone unfamiliar wanted to see its original design. This is not existential drama like Company or Sunday in the Park. Always been fun, goofy spectacle.

Highly random thought, sparked by the return of Doctor Who...

In the episodes New Earth and Gridlock DW had a feline race, the Catkind, achieved entirely through make-up. They looked like this:-

Would this have been a viable approach for the Cats movie to take? Or would it have freaked people out just as much as the one they did take?

I don't think it would have been as freaky since it looks less human. It also looks more believable.

I have to wonder if the Movie didn't have such nightmarish CGI, if it would have done better.

I've also read about a scene where a character rips off her skin, and bites the heads off some singing dancing cockroaches with human faces/heads...!?!?

Who even thought THAT would be a good idea???
looks like the Star Wars Holiday Special. How could Hooper go form doing Les Miz to this?

Well, the 'skin-stripping' is undoubtedly a take on the stage moment of Jennyanydots shedding an outer coat (a visual metapor for the two sides of her personality, probably) but a rather cartoonish/grotesque one, and while there are cockroaches - she trains them - the eating of one is certainly new. Odd, to say the least.

I'm talking about how it looks. it looks like it's 70's SFX or worse

It probably wouldn't have freaked people out as much, they've been doing cat people like that for ages.

Erm, I believe you made a very similar point earlier in this same thread: https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/cat...elba-taylor-swift.300531/page-2#post-13023680

I've thought about this, and have come up with what is probably the best answer for your question.

A viable approach? Certainly. One they would have used? Never in a million years. They have all these name stars in the film. There's no way they're going to cover their faces with this much obscuring makeup, just to make the cats look 'realistic'. That was never an option.

As for freaking people out? We'll never know.

It's weird because you look at the CGI and it's genuinely disturbing but when you're watching the movie it feels weirdly normal. You get used to it? Though the CGI in Rebel Wilson's dance and singing scenes was definitely out there.

I went in expecting to hate it, I came out not actually hating it. I've never seen the stage show and there are a lot of loose ends that I didn't feel were resolved but assume that's the case with the stage show in parts too. Some of it was terrible, some of it genuinely great. I'd watch it again though.
