Okay, some shots suggest the main character can move backward in time or perceive time moving backward. The title is a palindrome and the logo is rotationally symmetrical, and the poster literally shows the protagonist coming and going (and he seems to be wearing a breathing mask in the latter half). So we have some clues to the concept behind the movie.

Plus, Michael Caine is there. In a Christopher Nolan film. What a shocker.

guess is that when he is moving time backwards the air is not breathable.. hence the mask

Even before the trailer I'd already seen a couple references on Io9 to it dealing with time travel. From the trailer, it looks more like it'll be time manipulation rather than time travel though.

Is the title perhaps taken from the early Christian acrostic:

    ROTAS
    OPERA
    TENET
    AREPO
    SATOR

ETA: This is an anagram of PaterNoster twice over if the central N is crossed plus 2 extra A(lpha)s and O(mega)s?

Besides meaning "belief" in English, tenet is Latin for "he/she/it holds".

Apparently there was a shorter teaser before, but Warner didn't officially post that one online, or something. From what I can tell, not a lot has been revealed about the plot. The Verge calls it Nolan's "most ambitious film yet." (source) We can be sure of some things at least: there will be some kind of off-the-wall idea introduced toward the end of the story, and the title of the movie will appear on screen at the end, right before end credits roll, instead of at the beginning.

Tenet is a palindrome so the film will be palindromic in some aspect? Perhaps the protagonist unknowingly interacts with a time-reversed version of himself throughout - one version only realises this at the end from our pov - the time-reversed other version at the beginning.

Nolan usually places his titles at the end. Interstellar he did it at the beginning

Titles at the end are so common in movies these days that it barely warrants a mention.

    My guess?

Time is moving backwards as a result of something in the future.

Washington and Pattinson can move forward. So they're jumping into things that have happened but are being rewound

The "Welcome to the afterlife" line has me wondering if maybe the premise is that people who die end up reliving their lives backwards, unseen by the living, or something like that.

The trailer is fascinating and I'm intrigued by Nolan's comment that this is his most ambitious film, which is saying a lot coming from him. I'm a huge fan of his so I'm really looking forward to this film.

Some IMAX screenings of The Rise of Skywalker had a "prologue" preview but sadly my theater did not. A friend of mine did see it and he enjoyed it more than the Star Wars film itself (granted he's an even bigger fan of Nolan than I am).

I'm kind of wondering, based on the line in the trailer about World War III being "worse than a nuclear holocaust" or whatever, if they're building to a "time war" of sorts. EG, war where the battles can be immediately undone after they're fought.

Could be John David Washington is tasked with protecting Kevin Branagh and Elizabeth Debicki from other people/other company entities.

There's a spy angle in it too.
