It seems odd that no one else would opt to wear it, though.

You do occasionally see Geordi's peons in a working onesie, that looks like a similar type of fatigues

To be fair, most everyone else in the main cast are chiefs / department heads / command officers, posted to bridge stations, etc... and when on duty are really in a formal role. Whereas Troi, she's got a fairly casual job going on, which seemed to get even more casual, once she'd sussed out the new captain, after the initial mission at Farpoint

Frankly, it's not out of line to just figure she's held to a separate standard, because her role is pretty unique, & loosely defined, per the specific captain

The coverall with the black undershirt? The one I'm picturing looks a quite different from the catsuit.

Yeah that's my guess: Her position has more flexibility, but the captain has the final word.

Another historical example I forgot to mention earlier: In the Victorian Royal Navy (when midshipmen were educated aboard ship), Naval Instructors were officers but were allowed to wear standard academic dress (or clerical, if they were clergy) or uniform at their option until 1891. Before that their uniforms were described in the regulations with the footnote "If he elects to wear uniform."

There was also Kirk’s green wraparound, we never saw anyone else wear that (well, not in TOS). And it was obviously uniform.

And Picard's jacket for that matter. I was never crazy about either of those. I don't see any good reason for captains to have different uniform articles than the rest of their crew. Captains can definitely bend the rules, though. I had a relative who was CO of an amphibious ship in the 1980s who wore brown roper cowboy boots with his khakis at sea.

Heck, think of the admirals. You'd be hard pressed to find two that were tailored the same on TNG
    That's the one. This.

I mean apart from the color, & what looks like a shirt underneath, that isn't kind of a similar garment on her?

Yes I thik that was the whole point of putting her into cilvilian-type clothes. As a psychologist, she's supposed to help her clients relax so that they can them unburden themselves to her.

I have to admit, that I liked that minidress uniform as well. Looked fgood on her. Surprised they didn;t have that or something simiilar for Troi those first two seasons.

Just saw this clip of Marina Sirtis - presumably from a recent interview - making fun of some of the lines uttered by Troi during the course of TNG:

As a very young kid, like almost four when TNG premiered, I always thought that it was cool that Deanna got to wear her own thing. It wasn't until I got older and realized why they had her dressed that way that my opinion changed. I was a teenager when Seven of Nine and T'Poll both debuted. The little creep that I was, I was a fan of their look.

I'm much more thoughtful as an adult, and I hate those outfits. I never paid enough attention to it until the wife and I watch Voyager together, but I mean they even put Seven in these crazy impractical platform heels. How was she supposed to do anything in that? Fantastic character, talented actress, terrible writing and design.

I never saw the episode, or at least the scene in it, but isn't there supposed to be an episode of ENT where T'Pol shows her entire backside? How is Trek supposed to represent an enlightened future when they're treating the women like trash?

I agree with you except on two points. The VOY and ENT catsuits were molded around the actors' breasts in a way to make them more prominent. On TNG Troi's suit rode up in the front terribly. It's embarrassing to watch sometimes.

For some reason I never realized that Kira was basically wearing a catsuit, either. How odd.

Rick Berman sorely, painfully underestimated Jeri Ryan.

    Thank you, Twitter :D :

Justice has been done. She's now on Picard (and wearing a much more practical outfit :techman: ):

The same was true for the TNG women's uniforms. IIRC, Marina Sirtis said they all featured padded bras. I think that even extended to the First Contact uniforms.

Even when I was a kid, 8-9 years old watching the original series, the skimpy women's outfits seemed ridiculous to me.
For TNG maybe you didn't notice, but for the first 2 seasons, Picard, Geordie, Riker and everyone else pretty much had on catsuits. I think after that Deanna still wore the boob dresses, I'm just not sure if Beverly had the two piece outfit that the others wore.
And the extras seemed to have the old catsuits with sewn on mock turtlenecks.
I've never seen the one with Seven in it.
But just to be clear, there are very few movies or TV shows where the woman (e)
    Are not objects.

For me at that age, again, I was almost four when TNG premiered, I just thought of Deanna as "the pretty lady who gets to wear a dress". I hate every uniform from before season 3. They're bad.

And yeah, as I grew older it became apparent to me what people wanted from the female actors.

Sirtis was lovely, no matter what she was wearing.

What I couldn't understand was why she couldn't wear her uniform she wore in "Encounter at Farpoint" when she was on duty on the Bridge?

TPTB decided they didn't like the cosmic cheerleader look.

In universe, Troi went on strike until she was allowed to tempt Riker with her cleavage while on duty. :techman:

Well...thats one of a few different catsuits...there were also different variants of one I like to call the "Enter Here When Ready"-Type...the one that basically had a "this way" sign pointing to her crotch?
