Spoilers Picard: COUNTDOWN! - Comic is available, spoiler discussion within

They knew about the supernova a year before it happened? I thought it was supposed to be really sudden and they didn't have time to evacuate?
Says on the page that the one year is an estimate not a solid date. It can still happen rather suddenly.

It makes perfect sense that the supernova is something that is predicted to occur, based on stellar observations. It also makes perfect sense that they can't pin down an exact time for the event -- maybe within 5-10 years. And so the "unthinkable" event was that it happened within a year, well before the evacuations could be completed.

My theory is that
That something causes Starfleet to cancel the rescue mission, which is why Picard retires. He can’t believe starfleet would just abandon them, that’s why he loses faith.

More likely, Starfleet tries to cancel it, but Picard goes ahead and tries to carry it out anyway, with something going wrong. Picard presumably retires as a result of losing faith in Starfleet as you said, or as disciplinary action for disobeying orders. This would account for the lines in the trailers about a rescue armada, things going wrong, and that woman talking about "another unauthorized off the books rescue mission."

The year of the nova is wrong. Seems like a strange error to make. It’s very explicitly stated in Star Trek ‘09

The year is an estimate

So the comic is out, and yep Picard’s ship is an Odyssey Class. His XO is also a character from the Picard series

Yeah, it definitely seems like
the impending supernova is now of the Romulan sun (Eisn) itself, not the distant Hobus-star from previous storylines, going by what's mentioned later on during this issue.

Also, that 2386-dating at the very beginning of the issue seems like it might imply the supernova has recently taken place, but the exact dialogue on that first page ("[We] owe him. The man who risked everything for us") is still just vague enough that it could be referring to the events of Picard's evacuation mission to Yuyat Beta, not the destruction of Romulus itself.

Given that (as someone else above just mentioned) the exact date of the supernova is very explicitly established onscreen in the 2009 film, it would be a pretty careless error to make, though those do tend to happen on occasion. Guess we'll see, here.

It would be very like the CBS Trek people to pick up a fantastical plot element from ST'09 and end up making it make even less sense than it did before:rommie:

The effects still reach far beyond one system. The colony is at the edge of the "blast zone"

Oh, on the contrary. From what I've heard, it sounds like it's treating a supernova far more sensibly, as something that can be anticipated before it happens (but not narrowed down to the exact time) and that would affect far more than one star system. The problem is that the '09 movie's version was so completely nonsensical that any attempt to impose some semblance of sense on it is still going to have sizeable logic holes.

Anyway, I hope it isn't the Romulans' own sun that's going supernova, since by all rights, stars capable of supernova would never live long enough to host inhabited planets. But that ship sailed half a century ago with Minara and Sarpeidon, as well as the tendency of Trek to put inhabited planets around supernova candidate stars like Antares, Rigel, and Deneb.

Musiker?
Just based off of the second trailer I was already wondering if she had served with Picard at some point.

Huh? The comic really doesn't say that.
It seems to be at least implied in the issue, in particular this page, which shows a sun, then a shot of the Romulan capital (with sunlight streaming down on it), and then a shot of the Imperial Senate (with the sunlight very emphasized):

Again, this could just be entirely circumstantial, and that sun could be a completely different star altogether, but this, coupled with several dialogue-bits by Picard and other characters referrring to the "Romulan supernova" might be a clue.

Odd that the name of Picard's new first officer, Raffi Musiker, is “Riker” with “affi Mus” in the middle. Who’s his new ops officer? Dan Minetta? Plus security chief Wilma Hendorf, Doctor Craig Usher, and Counselor Tricia Aoi.

True, plus the supernova not being Romulus' star was always non-canon. Spock doesn't say one way or another what star it is.

The script said it was a star in the Beta Quadrant but never specified what star, but that never made it on screen

The Beta Quadrant isn't mentioned in the movie dialogue -- just that "a star" went supernova and Spock promised to save the Romulans from it. If it had been the Romulans' home star, I think he would've said so rather than use such a generic descriptor.

That is really funny, I hadn't noticed that.

Haven't read the comic so far.

By the way, do we see LCARS on the USS Verity? From what i have seen in the preview picture, there were none and i really wondered about their absense...

If there aren't any, what's the reason for this? Simply artistical decissions for the comic or a hint that starfleet vessels in the Picard era don't use this kind of display anymore?

LCARS was Mike Okuda's design, and he isn't working on the new shows. (He's currently working on Ronald D. Moore's For All Mankind as a technical consultant, among other things.) I mean, I suppose the design belongs to CBS and they could use it if they wished, but it stands to reason that the new show's art staffers would want to design their own graphics style.
