Not sure what that means. What do they have to do with it?

Good. Now we can get a movie to wrap up their tangent universe and restore an actual narrative to the franchise that includes the movie offshoots, and stop arguing about timeline rewrites and alt universes.

    Crisis on Infinite Star Treks?

Seriously though, I hope they find a way to reduce the budget for this one. Paramount has had a lot of expensive bombs lately and really spending a mint on this latest Star Trek film may be a nonstarter.

I like Beyond, but it felt like they spent a ton of money on pretty shots of that space station that were nice, but added nothing to the plot.

I think the old Star Trek films worked because they had smaller budgets and thus the margins were easier to manage.

I don't think they want to wrap them up. I bet the are able to get at least 2 more before Tarantino does his movie which will proably have a Joker like impact on the franchise expanding Trek's possibilties. Jason

Technically, William Shatner is a poster on this board, and his motion picture directing debut didn't lose 99% of its budget.

I get it, Fargo was great, you laughed, you cried, it was better than Cats, but when people working on Star Wars bomb half that hard, they get their phone number lost (c.f. Colin Trevorrow and The Book of Henry), not hired in the first place. Something feels hinkey with this.

Why? Hawley's still doing solid work.
It seems Trevorrow is directing next Jurassic World , so someone still has his number.

What do you mean, "still"? It's the most recent thing he's released. He's made one movie. That no one wanted to watch. Six weeks ago.

Remember how it seemed weird when Orci was going to direct Star Trek 13 because, apparently, he was the only person who was still showing up at the studio from the first two movies and didn't have anything better to do? This is weirder. It'd be less weird if the news came out before Lucy flopped, but the fact that they're negotiating for him after that doesn't seem like a good sign to me for the suits' aspirations for the next Trek movie.

    Legion is wonderful.
So? Did any of us get a movie out six weeks ago? Yeah it bombed, but for some reason people want to hire the guy. So there must be something about him they want and like.
ETA- I thinks its' pretty clear that they're hiring him based on his work on TV. No need to start a conspiracy theory

Yes, exactly, this doesn't add up, I'm glad you're coming with me on this.

Nope. What adds up is he has some solid TV credits. They're looking at that. Like I said, no need for conspiracy theories.

If it were his only directorial credit I would be concerned. But he has more under his belt than just "Lucy in the Sky."

Of course, it is possible for studios to get it wrong. Famously, "John Carter"'s creator banked heavily on public familiarity with the property that wasn't actually there.

But, I'm not that concerned with Paramount's decision...thus far.
I highly doubt this will happen in this film. I think you will be very disappointed.

Exactly. Boy, I sure hope someone holds my mistakes against me when I screw up...

Maybe that something is proven talent. Not a mystery. It is unknown if that will translate to box office success but I am confident that it has a good chance of being good. Jason

If he was just writing the story I'd be totally stoked. I love Fargo, and I think he could write a story that was super Star Trek-y, like mid-seasons TNG Star Trek-y. But his movie bombed bad... even if the next Star Trek film is going to have a smaller, more controlled budget, the amount of money Lucy In The Sky lost is bonkers. I know Variety is a reputable source, but I can't help but think maybe their info is a little off and he's just on board to write the script.

Give it to Joathan Frakes.. wait.. Thunderbirds.. Nevermind!

Well, even Beyond had not needed visuals.. Like the whole planet! They cgi'd all the landscape, they didn't have to.. have it all tree's, maybe tint it blue maybe and Tada!

But honestly.. I'll take a good script and movie.. not really care who does it..

It sounds like they are still in the negotiating phase so where that leads is not set in stone yet. Regardless, much to many people's consternation I'm sure, Paramount will be involved and tightly controlling the money.

Eh, the difference is that Orci had ZERO directing experience and has since dropped off the face of the Earth. Hawley may have had one flop, but he also has a tone of credible work under his belt as a writer/showrunner/director that still makes him a noteworthy choice. Truthfully I would have been more excited at the prospect of him running a Trek mini-series, but if he has something to offer for nuTrek I'm not gonna say no to that. At the very least, it won't feel like the movie's script was written in crayons.

That’s surprising news, and pleasing, though I’d much rather see the Tarantino film made.

I don’t think there’s much to argue about. It’s a standalone alt universe. If anything, there’s far more argument about inconsistencies in the prime universe’s “actual narrative”.
