It took six season to find out who Jon Snow's mother was. I think we can handle not knowing every facet of the Mandalorian's life after 39 minutes.
Ok...doesn't really make it bad. But, I think this is a difference of expectations and how the story is being told.
Regardless, no one has to like it or watch it. But, I think there is something to be said for personal expectations.
Wow, that is such an unbelievably terrible example that missed the point 1000%.
"Game of Thrones" has a massive cast and even in the first episode, manages to create complex, engaging characters in the span of one hour. Mandalorian can't even accomplish the same for ONE character in its opening episode. It has nothing to do with "knowing every facet", it's about making someone interesting.

Actually, yes. A TV episode without a good plot or good characters is bad. What do YOU want out of your shows?
To be entertained, to be intrigued by the characters, and want to learn more about them. So far, Mandalorian has hooked me enough to want me to continue. Much like a pulp novel it has me interested.
And, no, I don't want Breaking Bad, or Mad Men or The Sopranos. That's not Star Wars.
No, I hit the point pretty much right on. You're freaking out over not knowing everything about a character after a single episode. We did not know a lot about the characters in GOT after the first episode. That entire first episode is loaded with mystery and obfuscation. They literally had to ADR Sansa saying Jaime was Cersei's brother because test audiences didn't get it. Most of the characters were blank slates or basic stereotypes - the girl who wants to be a warrior, the girl who wants to be a princess, the boy who just wants to fit in.

I enjoyed the episode. It was a decent glance into the seedy underbelly of a post-Imperial galaxy. Intrigued to see where they go with it.
Exactly this. Not every pilot episode needs to be brimming with character development. They’re creating an air of mystery around the main character which based on the flashes in the scene with the armourer might be relevant later on.
While we know the Star Wars universe, the first episode had to do a lot in world building. This is post-ROTJ/pre-TFA and in seedy part of the GFFA we’ve never spent a lot of time in. I enjoy that we were more or less dropped in with not a lot of exposition but a lot of intrigue instead.
But understandably this isn’t for everyone. My wife is traveling this week. She would have been bored to death. And that’s okay.
I like it, Main character isn't some stiff no humor guy.. his interactions with IG were hillarious, and Nick Nolte gave us a new catch phrase..

He doesn’t like droids
He’s capable of creative problem solving
He won’t kill children for money
He’s not afraid of poor odds
He is slowly acquiring a beskar suit of armor
That’s not bad for 40 minutes.

It certainly hits all the right notes. I really like what I have seen from the first episode, looking forward to seeing where this series goes. Some throwback stuff that plays to the old fan, but not too much to scare off new viewers.
My 9 year old self would have absolutely loved this, carbonite, amban phase pulse rifle that harkens to the Holiday Special, just a lot of cool stuff that reminds me why I got into Star Wars as a kid.

I love the way they (Filoni?) often embrace pieces of the "abandoned" Star Wars universe. It was great seeing those creatures from Battle For Endor, I was really waiting for one of them to scratch it's own face just like the stop-motion version.
I liked the effects and feel of the universe. However, IMO the story left a lot to be desired. It felt more like the teaser of an episode than a full episode. Still looking forward to the next episode though.
