Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

Regarding the canonicity, I just hope the people behind the Star Trek Universe are a little smarter than whoever decided to put Darth Maul into Solo: A Star Wars Story, which only made sense if you'd seen some animated Star Wars show from years before (which I and my friends hadn't)

Imagine a big shocking Picard season 3 ending twist that only makes sense if you'd seen episode 4 of season 2 of Lower Decks. Then again, these people made a direct sequel to "The Cage" and made it an integral part of Disco season 2 so I guess anything's possible.

Best episode of S2 Disco.

He had those robot legs in Rebels, too, which I think was the first time in canon (I think) we've seen him on screen since Obi Wan first cut him in half in TPM and the first indication we got that he survived the battle and subsequent fall.
The whole story of how he survived and got the robot legs is covered in Clone Wars. He has a fairly long arc that weaves in and out of the last couple season, and will continue in the Disney+ episodes. That story is then picked up in Rebels.

Ah very cool! Looking forward to linking up D+ with Hulu so I can catch up on some of the older episodes. November, I think, is when they turn that streaming service on.

This show sounds like a riot. In all the excitement about Picard it's getting overlooked but I think it's going to be a gem. Pretty much any character can show up in this which should be fun.

Since it's animated it opens up possibilities for some real out there non-human looking alien species to appear on a more regular basis. I would like to see maybe a reappearance of a Crystalline Entity again (or something similar) or the Lactran's again from the original animated series oh and the Tribbles because of course they just have to make an appearance.

I know this isn't coming from all of the same people as Rick and Morty, but that show has some really crazy looking aliens, hopefully McMahan can bring some of that style with him to Lower Decks.

I listened to the Lower Decks panel at STLV and I'm actually really looking forward to the series now. I like the idea of Second Contact and it makes sense that the Enterprise gets all the credit but what about the guys who come in after and either have to clean up the mess or get this new civilization to adapt to what they have just witnessed. I think this could be a really fun series.

Q: Is #LowerDecks canon?

.@MikeMcMahanTM: The short answer is yes. There is nothing in the show that prevents it from being canon. But also our characters have heard stories about Data and Janeway. So they are effectively Star Trek fans as well. #DST

Mike asked if #StarTrekLowerDecks is accessible to non-fans and the wider world. He says it will be immediately understandable to fans. “It’s a show for people who grew up with this but doesn’t punish you for not knowing” #DestinationStarTrek @SetTheTape

He actually stated that they would refrain from making the aliens look too crazy as he wants to make the show feel and look in the same vein as TNG.

Mike says the shows are half hour long and have A and B plots, with a C plot running underneath. “Like a TNG episode just with more of a sense of humour.” #StarTrekLowerDecks #DestinationStarTrek @SetTheTape

Mike says the ship is a support vessel specialising in “second contact”. It sweeps up after the big explorers have done the initial work. #StarTrekLowerDecks #DestinationStarTrek @SetTheTape

I was at the panel. I thought it was very good, considering it as a Skype call. Listening to other fans around me, it seemed like he was saying all the right things. This is going to be a gem.

Have they changed this slightly - I'm sure in early promo material - it was set in 2383 or something like that?

CBS AA likes to behave like a broadcast network (e.g. their parent company) and start their season in September/October. Since Discovery season 2 and Picard season 1 were not ready to go until January they used the Short Treks to kickoff their Star Trek season in October in the last couple of years. So for the 2020/2021 season they could use Lower Decks to kickoff the season (if it's available by October), though I hope they still make Short Treks.

It was always 2380 I’m sure.
The first mention of a date for when Lower Decks was set was at SDCC in the summer, where indeed they said 2380.

Given how well Short Treks have been catching on, they'll almost certainly continue them for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, and Kurtzman has said that each CBS AA Trek series will have its own mini episodes in the Short Treks. So there will be Lower Decks Short Treks too.

Aren’t cartoons like 20 min each episode? What would be the point of making a 10 min animated short trek?

Maybe those will be 5 minutes. There are 2 upcoming animated Short Treks based on Discovery this December.
