So What Are you Reading?: Generations

I reread Star Trek: Mirror Universe: Obsidian Alliances over the weekend.

Cutting Ties is a very good alt-New Frontier story. After a few less than stellar entries in the main series, it felt like Peter David brought his A game to this tale. I like the tight focus on Calhoun and Soleta, and it is fascinating to see how these mirror versions of the characters navigate an Alliance-dominated galaxy.

By the way, does anybody else think of Zak Kebron as basically Ben Grimm in Starfleet?

Saturn's Children is partially just a story to move chess pieces around the board to set up where people are for Warpath and Rise Like Lions. Still, it's fun to see the O'Brien/Keiko relationship play out in the AU, and mirror Kira's clever machinations help make it a pretty interesting read.

The story that does not work for me is The Mirror-Scaled Serpent. There is an overload of violent, sexual, and violently sexual content that goes far beyond what is in the mirror episodes and most of the other AU print stories. While there is sex and a little extreme violence in the other Obsidian Alliances stories, it was not given as much focus there, and in the DS9 story, there was a lot more artful prose in those parts. The plot and references to other parts of prime universe Trek work fine, but I found the story to be unpleasant on the whole. It didn't help that there was almost nobody I wanted to root for. Chakotay, Tuvok, and Kes were sometimes okay, but most everyone else was a monster.

Now starting Gorkon Book 2 "Honor Bound"

I finally ordered my copy of Collateral Damage--I don't have any idea why I waited until now but it paid off because I got it for just over $10 on Amazon, woo-hoo. And I pre-ordered the upcoming Picard book. They had it on Amazon for a little over $19 (off the list price of $25). I'm very curious to see what that cover will look like. I'm sure it will have the Picard TV show logo but how will the picture appear? I imagine it will feature Picard prominently.

Which one is that?
The Brave and the Bold Book 1 by some loser......

"Another excellent idea, Captain," T'Pol said.

"Twice in one lifetime, Sub-commander," Archer said with a wide grin. "When you're hot, you're hot."

New Frontier: After the Fall

I like that the book starts off with a note from the editor saying that there is a time jump and that will be no reset, thinking that people would assume there would be one.

But seriously, when is the reset? :)

I’m enjoying it so far but I’m not a fan of this Robin/Cwan romance. She can do way better than that idiot. :)
I knew Shelby becomes admiral from other books but it does seem rather soon. You’d think someone who wanted to be captain all her life would at least do five or so years as one before giving up.

Isn't that a Jerry Reed reference?

Mirror Universe: Shards and Shadows

Most of the stories here are decent. The Greater Good, The Black Flag, and The Sacred Chalice are all excellent entries in the mirror Trek saga.

I finished up the last comic story in STTNG: Unseen Enemies, The Killing Shadows, a couple days ago. This one was OK, the story was pretty interesting, and overall the art was pretty good. The one big issue I had was that it had Geordi at Tactical instead of engineering with no explanation that I noticed.

Reading through Diane Carey's Battlestations! Struggled with a twenty page chapter about Piper demanding control of the ship she's been given command of. I was really surprised to come across a reference to the K'zinti. I thought there were rights issues or something, although Memory Alpha mentions that the novel Ismael references them.

They're Larry Niven's characters from his Known Space universe, so actually depicting them in Trek is something that would have to be done by him or arranged with him. But a throwaway name drop isn't the same as actual depiction.

With all the current discussion of Kathleen Sky's Death's Angel, I decided to read her (now ex-) husband's Trek to Madworld (arguably the first outright comedy ST novel).

Still not entirely sure how David Gerrold's introduction, with its extended discourse on how Goldin is a were-koala, came about.
