i'm pretty sure kurtzman said both animated shorts are associated with discovery (hey maybe one's a history of the distant future). but the short treks are definitely getting further and further away from their association to discovery, especially now that the show is carving its own path in the 33rd century.

i was really appreciating this feeling that the "star trek universe" is sort carved into distinct eras and distinct tones and looks. star trek: discovery doing its thing the far future, star trek: picard taking us back to the 24th century, star trek: short treks living in what is ostensibly a new version of the old the 23rd century, playing in the classic trek iconography. i don't know, i think it's neat.

For now, the short treks are tangentially related to Discovery, but less so than season 1 of short treks. As more and more shows are produced, I’m sure short treks will encompass all of the shows. Personally, I see short treks as its own show. A stand alone anthology of sorts giving us a glimpse of a b-plot that wouldn’t be out of place in Berman Trek.

Kurtzman has said that each series (at least the CBS AA ones) will have its own Short Treks. Of course they already have to be in production for that to happen. This season we are getting 5 Discovery related Shorts and 1 Picard one. Lower Decks will have its own Shorts when it is ready to be shown..

That's how CBS AA is handling it this season. Last season Shorts were listed under Discovery. Now it has a top level page and is being treated like a different series.

I'll be out of town tomorrow, so I'm going to post my review for "The Trouble with Edward" here. Note: I haven't seen it yet, and this review is based purely on the trailer:

Review for "The Trouble with Edward: 2/10

Well, Discovery does it again. The amount of issues I have with this "short trek" are many. Too many to list. They are:

    1. They mess up the tribbles, the simplest greatest species in all of Trek (second only to the Chalnoth). David Gerrold must be rolling over in his grave. Tribbles don't eat people! Starfleet doesn't know about tribbles! And the show isn't even staying true to its own continuity, as tribbles were supposedly a thing last season, in Lorca's office, but they didn't overrun the ship and eat everybody (if only).

    2. Really, a female Captain? In the 23rd century? This show just hits new lows every week. And that Pike cameo was nauseating. Does he have to be in every "short trek" from now on? They should at least teach him how to talk like Jeffrey Hunter.

    3. H. Jon Benjamin sounds too much like Sterling Archer. What kind of voice actor is he if I can recognize his voice automatically? He needs to change his inflection and pronunciation. All I kept thinking was "wow this guy sounds like a cartoon character from a show I only saw snippets of. Also, I loved him in Home Movies, but I shouldn't admit that because it gives away my age so I'll just use the modern-day character of Sterling Archer."

    4. And, lo and behold, Dr. Edward or whatever his name is, is a dumb white guy. Of course he is, with this show. All white guys are idiots or bad guys or both. Except for Pike, who, again, should be more like Jeffrey Hunter.

    5. And Michael is the worst. Thankfully, she wasn't in this "short trek", so I added a point or two.

The redesign of the tribbles is horrifying, but at least they have hair. Ha! Get it! Because the Klingons didn't have hair in Discovery's first season, so I made a joke about tribble hair, as if they would be presented as bald monstrosities. I am hilarious.

"The Trouble With Edward" caught me by surprise. Let me put it this way: if "Calypso" is like the TWOK of Short Treks, "The Trouble With Edward" is like TVH. They're my favorites for two totally different reasons.

Wow, someone has started a Gofundme fundraiser to appeal the ruling against Anas, the creator of that Tardigrade game. I won't link it, but Anas tweeted about it as well.

What happened he said he'd 'respect the ruling'?

The best they'll do is partially pay for his previous court fees.
I really doubt any lawyer will take on an appeal in this case.
(unless they need the practice in failing)

How in the world do these people keep going? It blows my mind that a segment of fandom can persist on hate alone.

I watched the RLM review of SEASON 2 after finishing it and they nailed pretty much everything I thought about it and also pointed out all the awful awful writing.

I've found the Short Treks, especially "The Escape Artist" and "The Trouble with Edward", far more satisfying to this point than Discovery.

I don't know. I find alot of troubling things in The Trouble with Edward, and still have many questions about Q&A. The popularity of The Escape Artist eludes me, but not as much as Runaway.

The Brightest Star is probably the only shining example of what a Short Trek should be.

I disagree completely, because The Brightest Star could easily have been a full-length episode rather than a short. Hell, it would have worked far, far better as that. Short Treks are ideal for ideas that are a bit to thin to stand up as a 40-minute plus episode all on their own. The sort of thing which - historically speaking - would have been relegated to the B plot of an episode of Berman Trek.
