I think part of it is that I enjoy the toned down stakes far more than the “everything is going to end!” storytelling of Discovery.

The Vulcan Hello was definitely a very welcoming beginning to the series - but not in the same way The Man Trap ensnared so many into the franchise.

Had I been around in 1966, I don't think "The Man Trap" would've instantly hooked me into Star Trek. I would've liked it enough to keep watching (so I guess you could call that "ensnared"), but I wouldn't have thought "This is so amazing!" "Charlie X" wouldn't have done it either. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" would've done it, but I also could've just chalked it up as being one really good episode. "The Naked Time" and especially "The Enemy Within" would've finished the job and sealed the deal. Then I would've considered myself officially a fan.

So I think I would've found TOS to be a creeper heat, if we went by the order NBC aired them.

With DSC, "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars" made me think "This is amazing!" and then "Context Is for Kings" sealed the deal right after it.

My ranking of the Short Treks to date. For the most part, I think they've gotten better as they go along.

    "The Trouble with Edward"
    "Q&A"
    "The Escape Artist"
    "Calypso"
    "Runaway"
    "The Brightest Star"

That's almost reverse order, except "The Brightest Star," which I thought was a total bomb.

I'm no longer interested in how they fit preexisting canon. That ship has sailed; it's a hopeless exercise, a lost cause. This is just based on how entertaining I found them. But, all that said, and strict adherence to preexisting canon aside, how Star Trek-y they feel is a factor somewhere in the mix of how entertaining I find them.

I like them all, but I'd go:

    "Calypso"
    "The Trouble With Edward"
    "Q&A"
    "The Brightest Star"
    "Runaway"
    "The Escape Artist"

I posted this back in May.

Update: I finally got the job I was looking for. I won't have to worry about how to make my money last anymore. Which is good. I spent the entire decade of my 30s struggling financially. It'll take a while to get back on my feet, but at least I'm doing what I want to do.

My personal liking order from the best to the worst would be:

    "The Trouble With Edward"
    "The Escape Artist"

    "Runaway"
    "Q&A"
    "Calypso"

    "The Brightest Star"

The last one is the epitome of useless as it doesn't contain any surprises.

    The first two are hilarious.

    The three remaining are meh.

So far, it's looked like Picard has been following up on TNG and VOY. The Romulans, the Borg, etc. Nothing we've seen in the trailers or in the descriptions links to DS9. Whereas on Discovery, we're going to see Trill, Laurians, and Cardassians.

I'm starting to think Discovery was given DS9 while Picard was given TNG and VOY because they want to break up who follows up on what. Discovery will be able to follow up on Star Trek in a way that doesn't step on Picard's toes and vice versa. Maybe this is what they meant by Michelle Paradise and Micheal Chabon coordinating with each other. There might've been more to it than I originally thought.

apropos of nothing, i find it really surprising/promising that 6 months later, i'm really starting to jones for new discovery.

it's gone from a show i didn't want, to a show i grudgingly enjoyed, to a show i genuinely enjoyed, to a show i now really miss.
