Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths to be 5-Part Crossover

It’s hard to figure out the filming schedule of the various shows. To accommodate everyone this not a normal schedule for anyone. It appears Brandon Routh has a big presence in this as Superman. New pictures of him in costume have appeared the last few weeks.

 

I just stumbled on to this - WOW! - Great to see Elongated Man finally involved in a Crossover. Hopefully Martian Manhunter is as well.

 

In terms of the original comic book “Crisis on Infinite Earths” I often wonder if older fans would have been more excepting of the Superman reboot if Superman from Earth 2 and Suerpmam from Earth 1 were merged into a single person. The way their Earths were. In a way John Byrne’s reboot took elements of both characters history.

It looks like Black Lightning may be a more integral part of this than I expected. But where's Supergirl? Or Batwoman or Green Arrow? Maybe they're off dealing with some other part of the story.

 

...and that's the difference--it would matter if its an A or B-list character across the board, not just to fans of one version.

Yes, Brooks is being written out of the show in the next four episodes to come. But the way he's been adapted, his death would be meaningless.

That's what I meant--the showrunners would never have the backbone to have their crossover approach the magnitude of the comic COIE by having series lead characters killed off. That removes all danger, importance of the conflict and consequence from this TV "crisis." Other TV series have been bold enough to have major storylines end with A-list character death that had a lingering effect in its wake (making the series better in the process). You will never see that in the DC-TV shows, when--of all times--they are trying to adapt one of the most ambitious, consequence-heavy stories in comic book history. That's starting out the gates hobbled by a fear that did not trouble Wolfman, Perez, et al.

Since you're so keen to see lead characters killed off ... I can only assume you'd be delighted if Black Lightning ended up dead?

 

If it truly served the a story that's supposed to have a life changing impact on a particular show's world, and its actually a valid, story-building reason...why not? Yeah, studios--more often than not--do not like killing off brand characters, but in theory, the needs of the story should come first...

That's how it worked on ER, where series lead Anthony Edwards' character Mark Greene had a long arc where he fought and eventually lost his battle with cancer. The series was built around the Greene character from the start, but when Edwards wanted to keep a promise to his family to return to his home city, the showrunners carefully created the cancer plot that had relevant effects on several characters and events, so it had a reason to be and the disease a real impact. It was not just "shock death of the season. There were consequences, with THE series lead/focus at ground zero.

The comic version of COIE worked in that same way, where major deaths had meaning for characters and the universe. So it goes back to a story that is supposed to be "all important" like this TV COIE, and if it is "all important" to life in the universe, then the danger and risk should apply to everyone, not just C listers (and lower).

 

Think about it though--Burt Ward's Earth dying, assuming he is his classic character, would mean a lifetime of good work would have been for nothing. We don't need to see Burt Ward die. Now if it's a different Earth, fine. Just not that one.

It's a shame--I always thought they could do a fun sequel series where Adam West was an old Bruce Wayne, and they brought in Terry McGuiness to pick up the mantle. It would popularize Batman Beyond the same way as 1966's show popularized Batman--assuming the right writing.

If I were them, I would maybe have a version of Kara, from a different Earth, also played by Benoist, die in a different Tyler Hoschlin's arms.

But I feel that these writers have disrespected Superman so much that the only thing they will do has have Superman be dead in KARA'S arms.

The writers have disappointed me before, but it would be nice if they come through as well as Doctor Who did in its 50th.

They did more than that. They created a completely new Superman, with some elements but with many additions that never existed.

 

Or maybe kill off the SMALLVILLE Supergirl played by Laura Vandervoort? Or, just to be really cheeky, kill off an older Supergirl played by Helen Slater!

 

I thought of that too, though my thinking is this--while it's really exciting to bring in all these other shows, the reason to do it is because basically, the fans know them, and have a nostalgic love for them. I think that to bring them back just to kill them off would be disappointing to those that were looking so forward to seeing these characters.

Since these writers are Arrowverse writers, and not Smallville writers or the Salkinds, I think they should leave the guests alone and have them just be heroes.

It sure would be interesting to see Slater suit up, and I wish they would also bring in Dean Cain.

I think what's very important is that the writers not follow the comics to the letter.

The purpose of this COIE is to create an all out amazing event to entertain. The purpose of the comics was to reboot the comics into one universe. We don't need that on TV, and to be honest, I think that's a terrible idea.

Looking back, COIE was unnecessary, which I think is the reason DC undid it a few years ago, and the original multiverse exists again.

We also have to think about the future of the Arrowverse. The writers have an amazing opportunity to make some course adjustments. After all, I doubt when they started Arrow, they ever conceived of so many shows.

If worlds are combined, they should be Arrowverse worlds. So Smallville would still exist in its own universe. Some universes could be destroyed, but it should still be a multiverse.

Heck, maybe instead of contracting, they expand from 52 worlds to an infinite amount (which they kind of did with Earth 90).

If it were me, I would absolutely bring Supergirl and Black Lightning onto Earth 1.

I would like to see her just as the older Supergirl, but that deserves more than stunt casting to get into her what/when/where.

 

^ Bringing Helen back as Supergirl wouldn't be "stunt casting" because she's already got an established presence in the Arrowverse as Eliza Danvers.

 

Kevin Conroy is currently in Vancouver filming his role. A few days ago he had a really scruffy beard at a convention appearance. It’s been trimmed since that.

I hope that they give Black Lightning all of the wild, insane, scientifically questionable and unashamedly WB Arrowverse superhero experiences that they can in this crossover before they return him to the relative normalcy of his own universe. Basically, I want him to do all the things in the crossover that he'll likely never get to do on his own show.

 

He's a school teacher...not a scientist. Uncle Gambi is the tech guy.
