After he basically saved the Federation and Earth particularly from Borg assimilation, I think Starfleet Command just decided to let Riker do what he wanted. If Riker wanted as his reward to go on being Picard's yes-man aboard said cruise ship, then that was what Starfleet Command was going to give him.

Yeah, Riker never struck me as a guy who could make up his mind.

I'm glad to see him enjoying retirement.

Just an FYI (that I forgot to post last year). Spock was also young teen Kelso on That 70's Show in flashbacks. Usually had a big retainer on.

I thought Q&A was a bit odd. I think it showed that this is where we can look for some of the quirkier character moments we might have seen in 22 episode seasons.

The only issue I had with what Number 1 did in the turbolift was that it seemed a bit soon in her relationship with a brand new ensign. But other than that, I thought making her "freak" be showtunes was awesome.

Not very familiar with Pirates of Penzance, though I've heard the song "Major-General" (if that's the actual title) before. I think it gave us an interesting look at what a Trek musical episode (something I've wanted for years), might look like. Wonder if maybe Pirates had some connection to the person to whom the episode was dedicated (maybe Chabon's dad).

Love that Chabon just said, screw it, I'm going for it. No way do we see these Short Treks if DSC is a broadcast network show. Another benefit from being on a streaming service.

Fair warning: The ghosts of the composers who wrote for TOS will be haunting you for the next twenty years.

Agreed. TOS had AWESOME music. Trek music went to sh*t with Rick Berman and his 'sonic wallpaper' edict (Read: He didn't give a damn what the music sounded like as long as it was low key and just 'there'.)

Don't believe it? Read it straight from an Interview with Star Trek Composer Ron Jones.

Number One struck me as the sort who probably kept an eye on Spock throughout his Academy career, as she'd be aiming to recruit the best and the brightest, which Spock likely was. If her crewmembers knew what she was up to they'd probably be creeped out too. And then there was what the Talosians said about how she thinks of Pike.

And this is a woman who demands people she just met call her "Number One". If it were any other nickname, it would be normal but come on, Number One?

As Pike politely put it, "Number One is very resourceful. People have a tendency to end up owing her favors." This probably involves all sorts of borderline dodgy spying and borderline sociably accepted behaviors.

I remind people that the Constitution class is an enormously horrifying pain in the ass under anyone other than Scotty given that people died and the ship was almost destroyed a few times in TMP. If the choice was "beam you out" when you can't get the F***ING ELEVATOR to work or staying inside for a few hours, I'd pick the latter.

She is the senior most officer aboard a Starship class vessel. She is first in line to take command after the captain, and is generally responsible for the junior officers and their conduct. I see no reason to be argumentative over her preferred way to be addressed.

The sincerely hope that S3 features a prolonged shot of the Discovery turboshaft system every single episode....just to drive people shithouse and ensure that half these threads are filled with inane, pedantic ramblings about how impossible it all is.

I'm going to write a letter to Kurtzman cc Michelle Paradise demanding it.

I damand it. I DEMAND IT!!!!!!

There's still an argument over how much of a straight military organization Starfleet is, although it's become more militaristic as the franchise progressed than the original exploration type premise I think.

All you've pointed out is that what she does isn't illegal, and I never said it was. It's just not my thing, and probably not a lot of other people's either. Like you said, she's in command so whatever she says goes, but they don't have to like her outside of that, i.e. Jellico.

She very much brings to mind Mr. Roberts from the movie "Mr. Roberts".

In this era, when Kirk calls himself a "soldier" I think there is a little more military, and a little less wiggle room. But, that argument will never be settled.

I get that it is not people's thing, and normally I am the guy who is all about people's feelings and such. But, the response to her asking people to call her a certain way is the exact same way Janeway told how she would like to be addressed, regarding being called "Captain." Is there an issue there too?

It's different. Una even demands Starfleet Command questioners call her Number One in the debriefing in the S2 finale. That's a bit much.

In the best of cases, Netflix will have it eventually; they got the previous set of shorts very late in the game, too.

If that doesn't come to be, perhaps we should list all those places where it is absolutely forbidden for the non-US audience to even go and try?

I think it may well be that she's not asking her to be called that as a rank but as her name. Out of universe, it's because she never got a name in the Cage. In-universe, it could be she's from that planet that Craft is from.

Has to be something like that, in-universe, because the time for giving her a proper name came and went in DSC S2.

Sure, we can gloss over some instances: it's cute that she gives her "name and rank" in the finale as "Number One", but it might still be a case of us missing the former part of that request because of the flash cuts. But for no character to ever call her by her name? Something like this short's reference to her preferring it that way was really called for.

Of course, when Pike finally calls her by her name, we also sort of get confirmation that she only has one. THat is, "Una" isn't just her surname, because Pike wouldn't use that there. But it is her surname, because it's what stands in her records.

Okay, so it may be more complicated than that, because Kirk's XO was both "Spock", "Mr. Spock" and "the guy from the family whose surname even his own mother can't pronounce particularly well". But it may also be just as simple as with Craft.
