Was there ever a sound track released for The Animated Series?

You're not a REAL fan if you don't think the Epilogue from Wrath of Khan sans Nimoy's narration is worth the price alone.

 

Also the TMP cue with the louder wind machine and the awesome TNG preview music.

 

Well, in terms of value, four discs for $50 makes it $12.50 per disc. I think that's pretty reasonable for a specialized, limited edition collection with all those liner notes, and considering the work that went into the TAS portion, in addition to the rest.

My copy is in the way, so I reached the same conclusion. I love supporting the work of these guys so I try not to think too much about how much I’m spending at L-L-L and FSM etc. Although, having bought the ST TOS 15 CD set, I do realize I sometimes am rebuying material I own but in better quality. Which reminds me of the line from Men In Black when Tommy Lee Jones talks about a new music medium and says “I guess I’ll have to buy the White Album again”.

 

The 50th Anniversary set has the second season library music in much better sound quality. The loud hiss is gone, and on a cue like "Sad and thoughtful on Captain's Theme" ("In every revolution, there's one man with a vision!"), that's a big deal. And there's the love theme heard in "Miri" that was missing from the big box altogether. So if someone is buying it for the TAS score, there's going to be a lot of gravy on top.

 

All true.

But, not to be disparaging of anybody's loves or interests, I never hear anybody talk about the TNG music on this set. When I was doing my episode by episode review / recap / babbling on the TOS box it was always a blast to me to hear someone wax rhapsodic about a score I hated (Man Trap) or at least didn't like as much. I haven't heard that about the TNG part of this set. Other than Communique.

Oh, and the three original Ron Jones tracks are sublime.

 

Well, to be fair, the TAS music was a major draw, as well as the Khan and TMP tracks, which really could overshadow the other music.

Well, I did enjoy getting “Coming of Age” a lot. That was always one of my favorite early TNG scores.

 

The only TNG pieces I actually play are "Suite from The Inner Light" for its stunning beauty, and "The Best of Both Worlds" Part 1 for the eerie lead-up to an exciting battle. For a show that ran seven years, that's not a lot of music. And I play the main title from First Contact and the Overture from Generations.

 

I do like the early run scores because they had life and energy. Once the 4th season kicked in, it began the sound the same. It wasn’t until the shows post Generations that the music was allowed to breathe again. Once McCarthy started using his battle music in DS9, they loosened up.

 

I'm curious about this. Is there any way to access and listen to, or separate, the voice recording audio tracks?

I'd be very interested in getting a hold of just the voice performance tracks of TAS episodes.

 

I'm sure there is, since that's how the people who reassembled the music tracks were able to do it, by separating out the music/SFX channel from the voice channel. You'd just do the same thing but pick the other channel. You'd have to ask someone else about the specifics of how to do that, though.

Gotcha.

Just trying to run down where the source audio would have come from. If is was indeed from either the VD or Blu-Ray release of TAS, then I would eventually be able to run down a process to do it.

No, it would be impossible to isolate already mixed elements. We used the original 3-track tapes, which had the dialogue, music and effects on separate tracks.

That's what I would have assumed. That the music re-assembly was done from source material, not from the DVD or Blu-Ray. I really wish there was availability of the actor dialog tracks (sans music and sound effects).

I think at least one DVD release of TAS did have the voices and music/FX on separate tracks, since there was a fan who was able to reconstruct a lot of the music in a YouTube video some years before the more comprehensive pro version that IndySolo worked on.

 

It was a a laserdisc, but if you listen carefully to that YouTube mix in places you can hear that they used a filter to remove the voices because very faintly you can hear occasional dialogue. But it many ways that was exactly how LaLa Land records did their recreation of the sound track.

 

Impossible to use the laserdisc. That was a mono track only. I suspect the YouTube video used the newly created surround channels for the 5.1 re-mix done for the DVDs to source the music. It's all academic at this point. Something better and legit exists.
