Star Wars Books Thread

I've read the first two issues of the Fallen Order comic. I wasn't impressed. Artwork wasn't bad, characters have potential, and I like the Second Sister, but the story doesn't do much for me.

Received today via Amazon:

Dooku - Jedi Lost by Cavan Scott - print version of the script for the audio drama. Nice change of pace format having it in script form rather than straight prose.
The Skywalker Saga by Delilah Dawson. Large young-reader retelling of episodes I-VIII of the saga. Might have been better if they maybe waited a couple more months and done a nine parts?

You had me at "large young rear"

I think part of the point might be as a lead up to Episode 9 for young readers. Seems appropriate to me.

Today at NYCC they revealed two new comic series comic from Marvel early next year.
The core Star Wars series will be starting with a new #1, and will be jumping forward to immediately after The Empire Strikes Back. It starts in January, and is being written by Charles Soule and art by Jesus Saiz.
Here's the description on Marvel.com:
In the wake of The Empire Strikes Back, it is a dark time for the heroes of the Rebellion. The Rebel fleet…scattered following a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Hoth. Han Solo…lost to the bounty hunter, Boba Fett, after being frozen in carbonite. And after being lured into a trap on Cloud City and bested in a vicious lightsaber duel against the evil Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker…learned the horrible truth about his noble Jedi lineage.

Now, after narrowly escaping the Dark Lord’s clutches, wounded and reeling from the revelation, Luke joins Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, and the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 to fight their way back to the Rebel Alliance. But what Leia, Luke, and their ragtag band of freedom fighters don't realize...is that they have only traded one Imperial trap for another! Enter the cunning and vengeful Imperial Commander Zahra, at the helm of the Tarkin’s Will!

The greatest space adventure of all time continues this January!

Then in February, a new Darth Vader series, also set right after TESB, will start. This one is written by Greg Pak, with art by Raffaele Ienco, and cover art by InHyuk Lee.
Here's the description:
“Join me, and together, we can rule the galaxy as father and son!”

In the shattering climax of The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader infamously reveals his true relationship to Luke Skywalker and invites his son to rule the galaxy at his side. But Luke refuses—plunging into the abyss beneath Cloud City rather than turning to the Dark Side.

We all remember Luke's utter horror in this life-altering moment. But what about Vader? In this new epic chapter in the Darth Vader saga, the dark lord grapples with Luke's unthinkable refusal and embarks on a bloody mission of rage-filled revenge against everything and everyone who had a hand in hiding and corrupting his only son. But even as he uncovers the secrets of Luke's origins, Vader must face shocking new challenges from his own dark past.

I was expecting either post TESB or something in the sequel era for our next ongoings, so I'm not surprised by these series. I've liked Star Wars stuff I've read by Soule, so I'm happy to see him taking over the core series. I haven't read anything by Pak, but most of the stuff he's written seem to be pretty well liked, so I'm curious to his Vader series.

They held the Lucasfilm Publishing panel today, and announced a whole bunch of new books, along with the comics.
The biggest reveal is something called Project Luminous, which was revealed with a slide that included this text:
The Force is what gives a Jedi his power.
It's an energy field created by all living things... until...
PROJECT LUMINOUS
2020
Claudia Gray
Justina Ireland
Daniel Jose Older
Cavan Scott
Charles Soule
It will involve material from Del Rey, IDW Publishing, and Marvel.
The rest of the book reveals were just covers, and creators, but I'm just going to list the titles and creators.

We are also getting a new Thrawn trilogy from Timothy Zahn called The Thrawn Ascendancy.

The Rise of Skywalker is getting an adult novelization from Rae Carson, and a junior novelization from Micheal Kogge.

There is also Use The Force by Christian Blauvelt, which appears to be a cartoony kids guide book to being a Jedi.

A Clone Wars anthology with stories by Lou Anders, Tom Angelberger, Preeti Chibber, Zoraida Cordova, Jason Fry, Yoon Ha Lee, Rebecca Roanhorse, Ann Ursu, and Gren Van Eekhout. Those are the names listed on the cover, and sometimes they don't always list everyone, so there might be more writers.

Dark Legends is coming from writer George Mann, and Illustrator Grant Griffin. It doesn't say anything in the article, but this is the same team as Myths and Fables so I'm assuming this is a follow up to that.

Alphabet Squadron: Shadow Fall by Alexander Freed

Ugh. Well, it could be worse. The previous times that the force was "explored" we got midichlorians and idiotic bullshit involving a literal family squabble taking place in the space between spaces. So, basically, this can't be worse then Lucas' bullshit. Well, ok, it could (Claudia Gray's Twilight wannabe was worse then the prequels), but it probably won't be, since Lucas pretty much hit rock bottom with his bullshit in this particular area.

We are also getting a new Thrawn trilogy from Timothy Zahn called The Thrawn Ascendancy.

Either this is a prequel to the first Thrawn book of the new canon, or (hopefully) people were wrong about Zahn having to wait for Hidalgo to do something with Thrawn before continuing his own story in the novels. I mean, there is no way there is enough time between the last Thrawn book and the Rebels finale for Thrawn to fit a whole trilogy, is there? I don't quite get the timeline in relation to Rebels, but I don't think this trilogy could fit post Treason but before the Rebels finale.

Assuming this is a general audience book it might be ok, but the last anthology book was mediocre enough that I never got through it, so I'm

I suspect the new Thrawn trilogy is probably a prquel about Thrawn's time with the Chiss. The title is undoubtedly a double entendre referencing the Chiss Ascendancy and Thrawn's ascension through the ranks to becoming the master strategist we know him as.
or (hopefully) people were wrong about Zahn having to wait for Hidalgo to do something with Thrawn before continuing his own story in the novels.
Zahn himself has said he's allowing Filoni or someone with the shows to tell the story of Thrawn after the Rebels finale.

Yeah, I meant Dave Filoni, not Pablo Hidalgo. I knew the right one in my head by screwed up a bit when I wrote the post :alienblush:

As for i the new books being a prequel, that sucks, and I hate that Thrawn is probably going to be in limbo until Filoni retires (because there is no way he's going to bother with Thrawn, which I suppose is better then him actually trying to do something with Thrawn if he has to be the one to continue the story).

He's with Ezra, so I don't see why he wouldn't do anything with him.

Why are you so bloody negative all the time.

Filoni is currently working on the new season of TCW and (apparently) The Mandalorian. I doubt he's going to be working on a Rebels sequel anytime soon, and its not like Ezra is going to pop up in a movie or on that toddler cartoon set decades after Rebels, so if Thrawn is stuck with Ezra, Filoni will probably retire because of old age before Thrawn gets any stories that take place after the Rebels finale.

Also, if I'm being negative its because nothing good is coming from this stuff. Star Wars is going in cycles. When Lucas was shitting out the prequels, I loved the EU (well, I've loved almost all of the old EU starting from the Thrawn trilogy, actually). Now the movies are Great to Amazing (outside of the completely unwatchable Solo), but the New canon stuff is mostly shit, with a few bright spots (like the Zahn books, the ashoka book, and The Mandalorian looks like it will be pretty good).

I spent most of my life used to reading great Star Wars books, while having four pretty good to great movies (and two absolute shit movies) kind of in the background. I've said it before, but the old EU is why I'm a SW fan, not the movies. My love of the old EU is what made me a Star Wars fan. So, getting maybe one good book a year or so, and having no good TV shows since TCW ended (and even then TCW had a lot of shit), leads to me being pretty negative about the non-movie stuff. Hopefully the Mandalorian and the new TCW Season will bring some great stuff to the non-movie part of the SW franchise, but its still pretty pathetic compared to what it was, and I'm not going to pretend that it isn't.

Something something ruined my favorite character.

I mean, he did completely fuck over the mandalorians, in the process taking several of my top 10 favorite characters out of continuity even before Disney got rid of the EU, and New Canon Thrawn sucks in Rebels (but is better in the books, where he is allowed to actually be competent and not constantly lose to shitty Space Aladdin) but that isn't relevant to this conversation.

Maybe not, but Saw Guerra and the Pykes made the jump, so anything's possible. Heck, Maul in Solo only works if you've seen the cartoons. Not saying it will, but it's not as crazy an idea as it would seem.

Honestly, I think the EU (Legends or current canon) has always been a mix of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Personally, I thought the last years of Legends were generally awful and the reboot was a vast improvement. They've made their share of missteps since, to be sure, but that's the nature of things. Personally, I'm liking new EU better then I ever liked old EU, but that's just me and my preferences for less of the "huge Galaxy-spanning event" stories and more side stories and character focus.

Goes to show how people have different perspectives. I have noticed a lot fo people on the "Given Us Legends" movement and with similar opinions like your's tend to be the ones who found that Legends was what made them a fan or the centeral point of their fandom. For me, it was always the movies. Love the tie-ins, but for me, the movies are the thing that hold it all together. Wouldn't quite go so far as to say that the movies are the only thing that make the tie-ins worth reading, but I do think they're called "ancillary materials" for a reason.

Honestly, I think the canon/non-canon thing is a bit overrated to this franchise. It's just informs you which stories go together one or the other box. Most franchises have multiple continuities anyways.

I really, really hope you're not a parent, because you have some strange ideas of what's appropriate for what age group. You'd probably be one of the parents who lets their 10 year old watch stuff like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

I wonder if the reason the teaser for Project Luminous was so vague is because it ties directly into something from Rise of Skywalker, either as a direct follow up or exploring some big new reveal we get in it.
