Spidey OUT of MCU

Disney originally wanted half the profits (50%), not 30%, so, no, this isn't Sony ceding ground.

Incorrect. Disney wanted a 30 percent share of first-day revenues (it was originally getting 5), Sony was pushing for 50-50 co-financing. Disney now gets 25 percent of first-day (and this is revenue, not profit).

Sony buckled.

The director of Deadpool 2 seems much less certain. But, sure, I'll take your random Internet poster word for it...
Deadpool made money. Deadpool 2 made more money. A studio has the rights to something that makes money....

If another one doesn't happen at some point in one way or another that's not the Hollywood I know

The studio has a contractual obligation to the shareholders to make money.

Shareholders can be quite vocal if the company neglects a revenue stream.

Yeah, this is about how I expected things to shake out. Sony just couldn't afford to walk away with that much money on the table given their previous win/loss ratio with Spidey movies.

The only ominous note in this for me is that the deal only seems to cover 1 more non-solo MCU appearance. To me that means it's likely that they're planning for the eventuality of killing him off in an Avengers movie, which I'm guessing will be 2022 at the latest. That or they figure that someone will have bought Sony out by then and the rights would have reverted back to Marvel.

P.S. how much do we want to bet the Feige/Star Wars announcement is what made Sony blink first?

More likely to be that they're proceeding on a 'One for us, one for you' basis and will renegotiate as they go.

Sony control the rights and are pretty unlikely to let him be killed off.

Maybe, but I'm taking the optimistic look (dangerous, I know) of perhaps they wanted to settle the deal for the third film right away (so not to delay production) and while keeping their options open for the future with another negotiation later on down the road.

If the Star Wars announcement happened more than just two days ago, then perhaps so. As is, that would have been a pretty fast turnaround (especially considering the deal was inked last night) so I doubt it.

Right. And I'm sure that Sony wants to cross Tom Holland into the own Spider verse movies. There were rumours during the filming of Venom that Tom Holland had spent a few days on the set and filmed a cameo. Of course, this cameo never saw the light of day, but the rumors refuse to die. I recently read, but didn't post due to the source, rumors that the supposed cameo actually had been filmed, but Marvel requested that it be exercised because they didn't want Holland's Peter Parker appearing in a movie that was released in between Infinity War and Endgame. However, just because it's an unconfirmed rumor, doesn't mean there isn't some truth to it. Sony would be foolish to not want to cash in on Tom Holland's popularity as Peter Parker in their other Spider-related projects.

Tom Holland's reaction to this on instagram was pretty funny.

Can we get these guys to sort out climate change too?

Translation: Holland's showing up in Venom 2.
Cameo at the end of Venom 2 with Venom 3 being Spidey vs Venom.

There are photos of Holland on the Venom set, so he was definitely there. Whether it was a set visit or he filmed a cameo as Parker is unknown.

I can't see Sony letting them kill him off that soon, they're going to want to keep him around for at least a few more movies.

Glad to hear they made a new deal. The fact that the deal is 25% makes me think Disney must have been the ones to cry "uncle".

They were. But shortly you'll start hearing chatter about how clever they were, "playing along game," uh-huh uh-huh.

Sony got a substantially better deal out of this than Disney was trying to negotiate previously. Being the one willing to walk away just about always works better than any other tactic.*

*Sometimes you walk away empty-handed after all - but with no real reason to think you'd have done better by staying.

We can prognosticate about a Deadpool 3 all day, but the claim that Disney has publicly committed to making it is false.

Yup.
