Space Battleship Yamato 2202

Cool, something to look forward to!

 

Good news. I suspect we will get a tease about it in October at the big 45th Anniversary concert.

I hope some U.S. studio still has Subbing/Dubbing/U.S. Release & Distribution rights.

 

I image Funimation will still be working with Voyager Entertainment/Bandai Visual/Sunrise Beyond to get the materials out.

 

Now if they could just snag Ark of the Stars while they were at it...

 

I will assume that if the second volume of Yamato 2202 sells well, they will go for it.

 

So what do we think this is going to be about?
Is it going to be an expanded adaptation of 'The New Voyage' movie or a retelling of the third series?

Probably a combination of both.

 

It was announced at a festival of some sort that Bandai will be releasing a 1/1000th scale set for the Earth patrol cruiser and frigate at some point early next year. Also there is a Gamilas Wolfpack set of four dimensional submarines coming out early next year. Previously the only way to get the Gamilas 1/1000th scale submarine was in the Battlecruiser kit, which tends to be on backorder.

The new series will definitely be Dark Nebula based on news from the concert. Some quick images of Dark Nebulas ships and Gorba.

Also there will be a update Cosmo Hound (Yamato III). Plus Gamilas ships. Hope to see some more of this stuff in Time Eldred's next Cosmo DNA update (tomorrow).
There will also be a compellation film for Yamato 2202 to be released in 2020.

 

Damn. I'd better get busy on finishing up my 2199/2202 schematics before I'm inundated with a whole new flood of mech...

Yep I have it. I did a refined version of it back in February here. I was in the process of building the other views when I got sidetracked by other pressing projects, but I do intend to pursue this.

 

Some early design concepts for Yamato 2205 should be in some magazine next month. Probably covered by Tim Eldred on CosmoDNA by December, if not earlier.

Not familiar with Dark Nebula. Is that the Bolar Wars?

 

They were in the two movies before that that were not dubbed.

 

Yamato New Voyage and Be Forever Yamato, I believe.

 

Correct. The first was a TV movie that came out in I think 1979. Takes place about a month after the end of Series 2 (which started in the year 2201), with Yamato and her remaining crew having been fixed up. They take on new graduates from the Academy and take off for a training cruise. Meanwhile stuff happens around Gamilas/Iscandar involving Dessler and the new enemy, the Dark Nebula Empire.

Be Forever, Yamato, was a theatrical release film in 1980 at the height of Yamato Fever. Its set roughly a year after the events of the TV movie (so sometime late in the year 2202) and involves the Dark Nebula Empire coming after Earth for what Yamato did to their forces around Iscandar.

The original Series Three (known in the west as "The Bolar Wars") starts either the year following that film, or three years following that film with the Gamilas at war with the Bolar Union and Earth getting caught in the crossfire (the story is an analogy of the Cold War between the United States (Gamilas) and the Soviet Union (Bolar) with Earth (Japan) attempting to stay out of it.) It was supposedly set in 2205, but the last film of the original run of the series, Final Yamato, retconned it to having to take place during 2203.

That said, the timeline for Yamato is a bit wonky since aside from the first and third series, there is not a countdown timer in the second series and only the year is given in the films. There are a few "firm" dates. The primary one being that it was decided that Yamato took off for the first time on October 6th, 2199, in the original series (to match the TV show's first day in of October 6th, 1974). The timeline in the first series can be figured out roughly from the "There are X days left) with October 6th being roughly day 1 of 365 days they have to return to Earth. Series 2 is set a year after Yamato returns home, as the first anniversary of their return is held during the second episode of the series (the gathering at Hero's Hill). There is no firm dates after this since their is no timer for the series. Series Three has a countdown timer of a year, but it is unknown the dates the timer started, or as it turns out, the year even. Traditionally, the idea is that Yamato somehow takes off again in October for Series 3, but if could also be early winter as there is a lot of snow in the Japanese Alps base where they launched the ships from this time around. Also an early 2203 launch would place the start of that series right after they got home from the Be Forever, Yamato film, and give them time to have gotten back in under a year's time to have the adventure in Final Yamato also in the year 2203 like it states in that film's opening.

The remakes' Third series will at least partly be set in the year 2205, as per its title, and I don't expect the timeline to be nearly as wonky because these are fans making this stuff, and they had to piece together these sort of timeline issues for decades now.
