As oppose to the aborted Detours, which might have been funny.

I don't think those movies are going to happen. I think they are stringing him along because they don't want to look like they fired him out of fan pressure or it makes them look bad by firing yet another director creating more drama. If Knives Out makes money they can justify keeping him. If not then they hire their first female director. Jason

I really can't see making all of the announcements about Johnson's movies if they just plan on firing him. They've been pretty quick to fire directors they aren't happy with, so if they didn't want to work with Rian Johnson anymore they would have fired him by now.
I guess I'm behind on my internet lingo, because I didn't understand about 2/3s of this sentence.

Yeah, the idea that a Hollywood company would string along (i.e. lead along with no intention of working with them) strikes me as odd. Directors are generally a hot commodity, and Johnson certainly is a sought after director, regardless of his reputation in the SW community.

LFL leading him along strikes me as a very poor business decision, because why would someone work with a company who toys with its employees.

I think it has to do with Lord and Miller and even James Mangold and the failure of Solo. They look like they are in disarray. A big reason they brought Abrams back over Johnson. Jason

If I recall, they had hired someone else for The Rise of Skywalker. Let that person go, than got Abrams back to finish the trilogy...probably because Johnson already had a project going on at the time.

Except the decision to remove Colin Trevorrow and bring Abrams in on Episode IX was made in September 2017. At the time, TLJ had not been released yet, meaning SW fandom hadn't started hating Rian Johnson, James Mangold and the proposed Boba Fett film he was supposed to direct had not been announced yet, and Solo was only a troubled production due to Lord Miller's firing. The movie itself was still eight months away from release and was therefore not yet a "failure."

If there was any chance of Johnson's trilogy being abandoned, it would have been done so within the past year. There's no way he'd still be talking about it if the franchise's troubles in 2018 in any way endangered the trilogy.

I do think the idea of him doing the trilogy was legit and my timing might be off but I feel at some point it went from sure thing to wait and see. Now if his Knives movie is wee received then it is easier bring him back. No doubt with a script and eveything all set because has been working on it with the hopes it will be made. It is weird though the Game of Thrones guys might get a movie as well so it could come down to them vs Johnson with the loser leaving the franchise. Plus at some point they are going to want their first female director so someone is going to be squessed out if you are doing just one movie ever two years. Jason

Except, it would still be a poor business decision on Disney and LFL's part to string along a director.

Iger and Kennedy have certainly have their work cut out to improve public perception of Star Wars handling, but that doesn't mean that they would commit a huge faux pau of basically lying to a director.

It's not ideal and I assume they would soft pedal it and call it a seperation of creative differences but they have already had their share of director drama. Even ignoring the SW ones they did publicly throw James Gunn under the bus and then they pushed out Whedon and Edgar Wright and who knows will be screwed over now that it looks like lied about their Fox merger. Just something to get their IP's and shut down the adult stuff which many though would stay around under the FOX label. Jason

Indeed. If there were any chance of Johnson being fired and his trilogy being abandoned, it would already have happened. Studios don't "string along" directors when they have no intention of working with them.

It makes for poor business relationships. Disney can't afford such poor relationships. Hollywood is a small town and stringing a director along would get around very quickly.

This is just nonsense - you don't do this with over $600 million of budget on the line - if they wanted him out, he would be gone.

It never ceases to amaze me how far people will go with their conspiracy theories regarding entertainment. There is a fiduciary responsibility that Disney has to its shareholders. The idea that they would string a director along purposefully in order to create a positive image to the fandom is ludicrous. But no, it’s all the “access media” and their “liberal agenda” to hide the truth and only the True Believers (TM) in The Fandom Menace know the “real truth.”

I’m not saying that they actually are just “stringing “ Johnson along....But his SW is only in the very early stages.

And Hollywood spends tons of money every year on scripts and concepts that never make it before the cameras. So it wouldn’t be unusual if they developed but didn’t make Johnson’s movies.

Sure, but when they announce a movie/series of movies, they really do intend to make it, it's just that things end up falling about as they go along.
Huh? Where does all this come from? I haven't heard anything even close to any of this, and I've been following most of the news on this front coming out of the legitamate news sources like EW, IGN, Io9 and Tor.com. Ok those last two aren't completely trust worthy, but they're still better than taking some rando on Twitter or Youtube's word as absolute truth.
