I did an effects shot with my tutorial Enterprise to see how it would hold up. I ran through about 5 different major attempts until I came away with something that I thought fit. The key was the lighting. The episode (The Enterprise Incident) is a darker episode and I was missing the fact that even the original effects for this opening shot were darker than normal. I'm curious to hear your opinions.
I love it! Since you're asking of opinions, I think the original episode the Enterprise in the opening shot has slightly more blue and there is an extra key light on the main sensor dish. Also, I think in the original shot the Enterprise isn't flying exactly straight (probably due to the camera setup back then) so maybe have the Enterprise yawed to her left a couple of degrees while moving forward to match the feel. Seems weird but I've just assumed that the ship was coasting on momentum and pointing at things of interest with the nose of the ship all this time.
Thanks, yeah it was bluer. When I try to make it look blue from the spill of the blue screen background, sometimes it looks real, sometimes it doesn't. It just wasn't working for me in this shot. And yep, I always try to correct the angle of the ship, the camera orientation, and how the stars are passing to make everything appear to line up. It takes me out of the story when I notice that things aren't in alignment. I know it's me, but hey, I gotta do what I gotta do! LOL! (Thank you Futurama!) I appreciate your input! Thank you.
I love the introductory shot to The Immunity Syndrome. It's one of my favorites because of the long, loving view we get of my favorite star ship. And of course, I keep trying and trying to remake the shot and capture that feeling from the original series. This one is using my tutorial USS Enterprise, all built and rendered in Blender 3D.
Eric and Blenderers, I wanted to put out something in this thread, because it seems that there are a good number of us not only using Blender, but keeping it updated as we go. That said, I've run into an issue that probably won't be unique to me. Rather than congest Eric's thread with convoluted verbiage, I'll just link to my thread about this on the Blender Artists forum. https://blenderartists.org/t/has-anyone-else-had-this-problem/1145955 The TLDR version is this: if you take files created in older versions of Blender (2.7x or older) and save them in Blender version 2.8, you will no longer be able to open them again in the older version again. Be careful what you save, unless you've already made the leap from 2.79 to 2.8. Brian
Thanks, Brian. Of course that's also why Blender tells you to not use Blender 2.8 for production yet.
When I'm spending THAT much time on a model? HELL yes. It helps that I'm old enough to be wary of anything new and shiny.
