Was there ever a sound track released for The Animated Series?

There's something "off" about the re-recording to me. It's very well done. But it sounds so faithfully reproduced that even the dropouts or pitch changes (I may be describing this poorly) from the potted tracks on the 50th anniversary are there. Like 0:15 into track 7 (Enterprise Attacked) or at 0:18 in track 9 (Evasive Maneuvers).

Or maybe my hearing is finally going away and it sounds OK to everyone else.

Usually when I hear a rerecording from a smaller label, it's mostly synth or rough approximations of the sound of the original recordings. It rarely sounds all that close. For this album, some of the instruments are extremely faithful, which impressed me to such a degree, I wondered if some of it was sampled and used to "prop it up" so to speak. How possible is that in this case? Maybe you're hearing dropouts and pitch changes because they are using the original music?

If they did, they'd have to use the cues from the 50th Anniversary CD, right? Do we even wanna go there?

It's almost as if they used the real thing and layered some stereo tracks over it.

I'm not at my brightest. Is that what they did? (It would make me feel LOADS better about my hearing.)

(And I just read Ssosmcin's post as well. Like I said, not my brightest.)

I’m happy to have stirred up this thread again years later, for all this great conversation. :) I almost bought that re-recording disc but will now just stick with the 50th anniversary set.

Neil - that podcast you and Mike did was excellent. I now understand that the original recordings from the France sessions are gone and you had to work with the mono masters.

I wasn't at the recording sessions for this album, but I do know how my restoration sounds and well....it was awfully familiar.

Except that it is against the rules to bump threads more than one year old.

Those rules are pinned at the top of this forum. Please acquaint yourself with them.

Usually I do not make exceptions to this rule, and I’m hesitant to do so now, as I don’t want to set precedent to be cited later.

So let’s all agree to keep this one time our little secret.

Every now and then a rapper will get sued for "sampling" somebody else's recording without permission. I wonder what permissions were in the license Meridian acquired for their TAS cues.

It looks like the Meridian Studio Orchestra, or Meridian Studio Ensemble, or Meridian Productions, might possibly be the house ensemble of BSX Records, which specializes in soundtracks and soundtrack compilation releases. Is anyone familiar with their track record?

I have their "chamber music" CD of themes from various Titanic movies, Titanic: An Epic Musical Voyage. It's pretty good, as long as you don't mind a small ensemble. I mostly wanted it for a new take on Raise the Titanic, to complement the Nic Raine / City of Prague Philharmonic recording.

Bottom line: I know BSX for high-quality performances, and seating a small but fine orchestral ensemble.

I've just listened to "Enterprise Attacked" track samples that both La La Land Records and BSX have on their product listing pages. If anyone else wants to compare as well, click here for La La Land Records, and here for BSX Records.
I notice some significant differences. For instance, the BSX/Meridian re-recording is in a higher key, and overall it has a kind of "concert hall" quality (a little more full/echo-ey?). The playing sounds like it leans more toward legato than the original. The vibrato strings are lower in the mix, and the horns aren't as brassy/open-sounding. Sorry if some of my wording is imprecise. I never learned much about the workings of orchestral music.

Listened to the samples. I'm no expert....The underlaying piece sounds very similar to the real thing, but I'm tempted to say it's all been re-recorded. The samples I heard were orchestral originally anyway... But I don't know...
