What are the chances of WoK being put into the National Film Registry?

Every year, the National Film Registry inducts a select group of films that have impacted the film industry (and the world) in one way or another. Everything from The Terminator and Top Gun to Citizen Kane and Gone with the Wind has been inducted into it. Basically, it's a Hall of Fame for movies.

I really believe that Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan deserves to be inducted into it. It's the one Star Trek movie that everyone knows of. If you ask any person on the street to name a Star Trek movie (even people who aren't really Star Trek fans), they'll probably say Wrath of Khan. It's by far the most famous Star Trek movie of them all and dare I say the most pop-culturally relevant even 37 years after its release.

Do you think someday it'll be selected? I sure hope so.

As a trek fan, absolutely I'd like to see this. In my opinion it deserves to be there. However, you speak to any general moviegoer under the age of say, 35 and I bet most of them have barely heard of the movie. So whilst I think it deserves to be there in terms of it's actual quality, I think it's cultural impact outside of the 'nerd circle' is somewhat limited.

I'd say pretty good. sooner or later they'll get around to putting in. No chance of any other Trek movies though (unless Tarantinos is like an absolute classic)

You can certainly make a case for KHAN being a classic.

It's a classic in my eyes but is it as famous a film as the likes of Star Wars, Empire strikes back, alien, terminator, ET, close encounters or other sci fi films from the era? I think we've got to be honest here and say no, it isn't. Is it as good a film as these movies? I would say yes, easily, but it's simply not in that 'god' tier of movies for fame and cultural impact in my view, however much I'd like it to be.

If public response is a factor, then perhaps TVH would be more of a candidate for the registry.
