New Picard SDCC Trailer

since i'm holding out hope data is an active participant and not a flashback or holoprogram or fantasy or any other type of unreal presence...

the admiral's uniform also in the trailer appears to be quite a bit different from the DS9-voyager-esque duty uniforms we see other officers wearing:

this uniform is closer to the TNG-style, mixed with the first contact/TNG movies uniforms. black trousers, gray tunic with black (or dark grey) shoulders and a division colored undershirt/collar. data (or B-4) may be wearing the operations division version of this uniform, which might be reserved for admirals, captains, or higher-up officers, or a more formal uniform option. so it's possible data/B-4 is an active member of starfleet, wearing the late 24th century, early 25th century uniform.
That chair does not look comfortable.

Doesn't answer my question, I'm afraid.

And, I already thought I was cynical enough. Certainly my response to the Picard trailer should illustrate that. :)
I'll put it this way: Being cynical towards Hollywood is logical. Speculating on certain decisions made by CBS or whomever requires a healthy bit of cynicism.

It doesn't mean I am not excited for the show, which I believe I have made clear in this thread. In fact, My consumer brain decided on a subscription while watching the trailer. When they showed Seven and Data, the deal was done. They have successfully found my wallet by this trailer.

Nonetheless, if people are asking "Why Borgs?" the answer seems pretty clear. Good pitch or not, good producers or not, the Borg are probably the most easily, and most widely marketable villains associated with Picard. Data is the most popular character associated with Picard. Seven is the other most popular character associated with the Borg.

I wasn't aware "It's just good business" was a cynical world view.

Fair enough.

Well, we've seen throughout the TNG and beyond years that admirals seem to have a certain level of discretion/latitude in wearing personalized variants of the usual Starfleet uniform. I don't think any two admirals' uniforms were ever exactly the same. This could be her own version.

I believe that's the case in the real world too, that generals and admirals can customize their uniforms. I'm not sure how many stars are needed.

Weren't the admirals' uniforms pretty much consistent after about the 3rd or 4th season of TNG?
I loved the trailer, I had been cautiously optimistic before, but now I'm really, really excited for this.
As for the Borg, so far all we've seen is a disabled cube, one former Drone, and we heard about another former Drone being in the show. So it looks more like the show might be dealing with what the Borg leave behind, rather than the active Borg themselves

Evan Evagora is hot.

I commented on his hotness on my insta story and he saw it . He's also Australian, and my friend claims to know him.

Anyhow. I'm excited for all the cameos, except Frakes. Frakes, who last year bemoaned Paramount making 'all these shows' (in reference to DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise), is the only Star Trek alum to be attached to literally all those shows, and all these new ones as well. He's even had his fingers in the Star Trek show that isn't technically a Star Trek show. All these shows indeed. They paid his damn mortgage :guffaw:

Nah but seriously, Frakes is fine.

of course. i've voiced my support for a fully human looking data... spiner with just yellow eyes or something and voila data got an upgrade. he looked badass with the half human look in first contact, it's clearly possible in-universe to make him a little more organic.

but there's also magic in that iconic data look.

Data won't look different because Data is not going to be "real." Data is unambiguously dead. The new Data is going to be something else, where his original look is required.

Data's software is like Spock's katra. It was transferred into another body. That's how I interpret it. B4, like McCoy, had trouble processing the other person in them. And while Spock's katra was transferred back into his resurrected body, what happens to Data's software remains to be seen...

... but it looks like the more things change, the more they stay the same. Picard is probably the TNG version of The Search for Spock. Complete with Picard striking off on his own.

oh, good grief. Get over yourself. You had my civil attention until that 3rd paragraph. I think you need to take a step back from all this, reflect on the nature of humor, and trade in some of your indignation and outrage(... over a yet to be aired tv show) for a healthy dose of cynicism.

There's healthy cynicism and then there's thoughtless, lazy cynicism.

Healthy cynicism is understanding that CBS Corporation is making this show because it thinks there's a customer base for it that will allow them to make a profit.

Thoughtless, lazy cynicism is assuming that immensely talented and accomplished writers are making creative decisions based on fandom fads, instead of acknowledging that doing a show about Jean-Luc Picard rationally means following up on the central trauma of his entire life (the Borg) in some manner.

And then there's they guy that scrolls through hundreds and hundreds of comments, page after page, and quote+, quote+, quote+ every perceived slight, insult, complaint, even jokes, and goes on an endless tirade cussing and insulting, but defending his beloved products and writers with the most flowery and uplifting speeches. I wasn't even one of the people complaining about the borg!
I will tread more carefully from here on out, and bury my cynicism and take things more seriously. I would amend my comment to reflect the lessons you have taught me, but alas, I could not find it(Truthfully).

And for the 3rd time today, @Sci wins the he thread.
Yeah, you showed 'em! Keep up the good work:techman:

Just a couple little observations based on another viewing of the trailer:
  • As Michelle Hurd's Raffi Musiker points a gun at Picard, he holds his hands up...along with a bottle of Chateau Picard that he's got slung over one hand.
  • Musiker wears a hat with a logo on it, but the logo is difficult to make out.
  • It appears that Seven may travel with our rag-tag heroes at some point, as she appears to be standing in front of (a blue version of) the circle of lights at the back of their ship.
  • Quite a lot seems to happen at the vineyard, assuming that the scenes of Picard meeting Seven and Picard pulling out a gun both take place there. Could this be some other location? Can anyone confirm that the decor seen as Picard pours a drink are artifacts of his?
  • Stewart tells us that Picard is making wine while living near Romulans, which suggests that the plaza scene (which appears to feature both humans and Romulans) might be set in France. However, this is the same location in which Romulans are seen dragging Picard bodily. So maybe not France?
  • Rios's ship appears to be some kind of cargo ship or freighter, as there are containers littering the deck and there seems to be a gangway in the middle down to a lower deck.
  • Picard goes through a lot of costume changes.
  • Dahj has a pillow that looks like a furry grey-green teddy bear with a blue lion's mane.

The plaza might be in Paris, if the office of the President of the Federation is still located there as it was in one of the TOS movies. Though there was a shot where we see Picard who has apparently stepped out of what appears to be a mass-transit transporter hub, so it could literally be anywhere.
