What if the Borg had attacked DS9?

The Rock

How do you think Sisko would've handled it? And would the prophets have done anything if the Borg had tried to use the wormhole?

He probably would have told the wormhole aliens something similar to what he told them about the Dominion to prevent them from getting through. Then a combined fleet would've been called in, same as at Wolf 359, except with a different outcome with Picard's help.

Regarding Wolf 359, it's interesting that the Borg would've had a very specific role in probably traumatizing Jake and Ben, but the writers never brought them up ever again in a substantive way in DS9 for them to face those fears. Not that they had to, but it was just a big omission. I personally wouldn't have wanted any kind of Borg-mania in DS9 (with everything that VOY was doing with it already), but 1 or 2 episodes to address that might've been interesting.

Borg: WE ARE THE BORG. RESISTANCE IS FU....

Sisko: 2 words..."dominion. fleet."

UMM....WE ARE THE ...ummm... BORG. WE ....ummm.... WE GOTTA GO...

Lack of confidence doesn't seem to be one of the Borg's problems. Unless a cube (or cubes) were passing through the wormhole, would the Prophets be able to make them "go away?"

Borg may already be aware of the Dominion from the other side of the galaxy and have no interest in going anywhere that would provoke them. Apart from getting an early visit to humanity thanks to Q, and their disastrous incursion into fluidic space, the Borg seem to pick their battles carefully and slowly. Consider how many centuries they'd spent in a small part of the delta quadrant not doing much.

I wonder of the Borg would have been able to assimilate the Founders?

Unlikely. There would be nothing for the Borg nanoprobes to lock on to. And the Founders would never let a drone get close enough to assimilate them. Hell, they could simply shapeshift into a drone themselves and confuse the Borg.

Dominion ships appeared in one of the Borg's memory flashbacks in Infinite Regress so they were certainly aware of them. Whether this knowledge came from assimilated Starfleet crew who knows.

They could use polaron radiation to force a changeling into the liquid state, then do all kinds of experiments on the changeling's morphogenic matrix.

You just gave me an idea.

Could the Changelings have originated in fluidic space and somehow got here?
Maybe some of the fluid crossed into our universe long ago and landed on a planet.

... maybe the ship was literally flying through unrealized changelings

Assuming the Borg would even know a Founder when they saw one. We see the Founders with that smooth skin because they were imitating Odo, but when he's not around, a Founder can perfectly imitate anything, and thus be undetectable.

I'm pretty sure it would take the Borg all of about five seconds, at most, to realize that an apparent drone wasn't part of the collective.

As to the question as asked, assuming Our Heroes didn't invoke a literal deux ex machina, DS9 left to its own devices (with or without Defiant) simply didn't have the resources to survive an attack by a Borg cube. A smaller sphere perhaps, and likely anything smaller than that.

Unless the fake drone poses an immediate threat, the Borg would probably ignore it. They didn't seem to notice when Janeway et. al. were all gussied up as Borg but retained their own personalities on board a cube. And they ignore Starfleet personnel who beam aboard their ships and just look around.

I wasn't suggesting they'd do something about the faux drone, just that they'd never confuse it for an actual drone...for very long, at least. :)

But the Founders sometimes were in the smooth skin state when Odo wasn't around. I think it was more a natural form they took when they interacted with other beings for one reason or another, and weren't trying to be incognito.
