I also get the sense that what they're going for here may be to revisit and tie up some loose ends that didn't get a satisfying resolution...Picard and the TNG crew in general, whose last hurrah was a film that many considered to be weak and derivative; Data's highly derivative death from said film and its ambiguous coda with B4; the destruction of Romulus; the ambiguous fate of the Borg, and how the whole Hugh angle tied in with anything that was done with the Borg afterwards.
Picard is to the Borg as Ripley is to the Xenomorph. It will never be a situation that fully resolves itself. Even if Picard thinks he's moved passed it, he hasn't. And he'll always have a commonality with other ex-Borg, like Seven. And those in the Hugh faction who've freed themselves from the Collective.
You know, I somewhat agree and somewhat disagree.
I disagree because protagonists need to have their antagonists to struggle against, and something like the Borg for Picard has had real stakes and consequences. This is good drama!
I agree because I think in a lot of modern highly serialized entertainment they have a lot of time to fill for a single story and we just spend so much time watching the protagonist lose over and over again until they finally win in the season finale. It gets exhausting. I too hope we don’t see Picard tortured again, literally or figuratively.
Q&A is the Spock/Number One Short Trek I believe.

And is this a sequel or not a sequel? Well after seeing the trailer and all the past elements revisited I think of the 4 movies. They features the TNG cast but were not TNG because they were movies - Picard (and Data) were the main characters in the Enterprise-E films with the rest supporting.
So I see this as the fifth follow-up to TNG after the movies, even though most of the veterans seem to be guest stars.
Even though we have at least one direct link to Voyager and the 09 movie (which is great continuity - Trek was doing the shared universe thing on screen when the MCU was a glint in Kevin Felge's eye) this mostly looks to follow TNG, which is logical giving the main character.
So like so
TNG = Generations = First Contact = Insurrection = Nemesis = Picard

If done right a lot of things are great in Trek: MU, Klingons, Borg, etc.

Voyager did a lot of damage to Borg, but it definitely didn't kill them. Luckily whole Control thing didn't end up being the Borg, so luckily they have escaped Discovery's wrath.
Here's hoping PIC brings back the Borg as something more than being a punching bag for writers who have ran out of ideas.
I personally don't agree DSC's take on the MU was probably the best (on TV, the novels handled it way better) since TOS.

Sincerely agree. If anything 'killed' the Mirror Universe, it was Deep Space Nine that gradually reduced the setting to a Saturday morning cartoon level of silliness.
Neither is likely. Riker has discovered sexoton particles and has ascended (fnarrr!) to a sexier plane of existence.
I think he is still in the Starfleet. Picard being retired is an important plot point for the character, I doubt they want to mimic that on Riker. I think Riker and Troi are Picard's Starfleet contacts he will call when he needs some sort of Starfleet help.
Riker will be sent by starfleet to deal with Picard, same way that Kim was sent to deal with Admiral Janeway in Endgame, or Geordi in Timeless.
This makes sense.
