Zactly. He acts the heck of of that scene. Obsession is one episode I would tell people to watch if they announced they couldn't get past the Shatnerian stereotype.
Let us know if you do, seriously. Other than the baffling "hey, Scotty, flush the HVAC with toxic sludge, would ya?" line, I can make an argument that it has the best dialogue of any ep in Star Trek except maybe Doomsday. Directing and acting are top-shelf and the story is great.
The funny thing about that Kirk line is that Scotty buys it. “Ayyyyeeee!!!”
Zactly. I know Kirk is supposed to be a genius - making eps like Space Seed, although I love it, hard to take in some ways - but Scotty's "the light dawns!!!" reaction just accentuates the problem. I mean, have McCoy do something useful in the ep and say, "JIM!!! DO YOU REEEEEALLY THINK *THAT'S* A GOOD i-DEEEEA??" before Spock coolly explains that automatic shielding meant to protect the crew from radiation in seat-belt-defeating emergencies is fully functioning and will prevent any harm to anyone not doing a Picard and playing the flute inside the crawlways. Two more lines. That and this would be virtually perfect dialogue for 50 minutes.
It was a great episode to be sure!

In Act 4 of "The Enemy Within," a freezing Sulu says, "Can't last much longer" and then it cuts to a shot of the Enterprise orbiting the planet. There's no music, just the sound effect of the ship.
This is really effective. It shows both the desolation of the men on the planet, and Kirk.
How often in any episode do we see the Enterprise orbiting without music? This has to be one of very few times.

In most episodes Shatner is so believable that you almost want what he has just said to be true and not just a line in a teleplay!

If you haven't read it, director Ralph Senensky has interesting behind-the-scenes detail about the episode on his BLOG

And now I've read it, and I recognized that I have read it before, not that I minded because it was a great read. Thanks. I think I blocked out the piece because it made me very sad about Stephen Brooks, who was one of Star Trek's most convincing guest stars, particularly among those playing members of Starfleet. He fits right into this episode as though he'd been a part of the crew since Corbomite.
Yes, what a shame he passed away so young. I would have been glad to see him take Chekov’s place at the navigator’s station. No more horr-e-bull Koenig Rrrrrr-ussian ack-cents.
That like is for the Stephen Brooks part, not the Chekov/Koenig remark. Walter's accent was based on real people and I've met Russians who sound like him.
I think it was Joe D’Agosta who recommended Koenig for the part of Chekov, even though he said Koenig had the worst Russian accent he had ever heard.
Considering how the fanbase instantly took to Chekov, I'd say D'Agosta was right.

Because they made Chekov look like Davy Jones with that dumb wig or because Chekov was just the butt of so many jokes?
Actually, I'd pin it most on Walter Koenig's performance. As much as I prefer season 3's Serious Chekov(tm), Walter does make the comedy moments bearable. He is iconic, and endearing, and putting in any old plank of wood wouldn't have had the same mannerisms Koenig had.
